Recruiting gurus, is this the most excited you've been..

I remember being so bummed about losing Lamont Green, Derrick Gibson, and Courtland Bullard (I don't even know if we recruited Bullard hard, but he was from Southridge IIRC and I thought he had a bad *** name). Ditto Bryce Bishop.

Bishop was a big loss. As were the others. Bullard and bishop to osu.
Yeah, German was defensive poy.
K9, he was. But, he was like 5'10. Animal.
U weren't happy w Nate Brooks production at UM? And I don't mean music.

I've got some from 96, I know, but this is oldest I could quickly find -

This issue stayed in my bathroom until I graduated high school. Major league class.

I got a bunch from the mid-late 90s when Butch was getting rolling, Interesting to read how Reggie Wayne was just one of a few names back then.

I also remember in the 90s calling up Bill Braucher's (??) hotline from the Orlando Sentinel to see who had committed to UM. I probably called 15x on LOI day checking for updates.

Was it Bill Buchalter?

Christ if I'm right

Buchalter had NO LOVE for the U and lots of it for the two FL schools up north (along with Ohio State, it seemed).

Does anyone remember the "Border Wars" recruiting mags? Eventually Jamie Newberg got involved with them (I think), but their print publications pre-Newberg had the best recruiting profiles, I thought. I used to have the one from the Markese Fitzgerald class, maybe I can find it. My mom used to go shopping and I'd just go plop down at Hastings and read those lists for hours. I can remember wanting David Warren (Tyler, TX) and Dennis Johnson (Kentucky) SO BADLY based off of those mags... neither of whom lived up to expectations (albeit Warren had a decent career despite some injury probs).

Border Wars spawned a TV show of the same name hosted by Newberg. It eventually became Countdown to Signing Day, which was the best recruiting show until ESPNU came around.

Bill Buchalter! That's the guy. Yeah, he hated UM and loved UF and FSU. He was Orlando-based at the Orlando Sentinel (iirc).

it's hilarious how little write up Reggie Wayne got in those issues compared to the other WR recruits all of whom are long forgotten.

Some hoardin-*** mofos in this thread.

/wishes I still had all of my old mags that got tossed when I moved from Fresno to the bay area in '99

Mine went all the way back to the first year of CaneSport. Tossed em all except for a few of the NC ones, couple others.

Really thought we were gonna get Kerry Watkins, another LA WR.

since the commitment of DJ Williams?( where he seemed to chose UM outta nowhere)

I still remember on Grassy that even guys like me( who don't really follow recruiting all that much) feeling a certain buzz and you had the feeling that something special was brewing

Regardless, this coverage on this site is light years from when I had to read Gary Ferman state every year that ERRickson had recruited the best class in UM history for 4 straight years( I still have those issues)

Tracy Howard's announcement on ESPNU.

I was so **** happy when he committed.

DJ Williams, Willie Williams, Anquan Boldin, Kyle Wright, Tracy Howard are the biggest I'm remembering.

This. DJ was the first. Was just such a surprise, we went from not even on the radar, to getting him here for a visit, to those pics of him at the beach in the water on his knees, suddenly everyone was busting a nut over the kid. I remember every site of every team he was considering was going bananas, some dude from Texas was even calling his step mom, John Madden said the kid was already ready for the NFL. LOL. I still remember how he dragged it out and was trolling people saying that he was going to make his choice based on wether he felt like going to BK or McDs for Breakfast that morning. That commitment was probably the first mass hysteria of the online recruiting era as far as Canes fans were concerned. KW was definitely the next. WW was also pretty bad. Tracy Howard was was great but I didnt think the hysteria was as big for that.

On the flip side, I remember the Antone Smith debacle. All the stupid stories about the UM slippers, and that he had asked Solly to sing to him on his visit or he wouldnt commit. LOL

The Bishop! That was the era where LOTS of top flight MDC kids were going elsewhere. Bishop was a stud out of Killian or Springs, iirc. Went to some big school like Michigan, no? Total bust.

Sh*t yeah I remember Borderwars. Remember Superprep, Prepstar, Athlons, Street and Smith, Max Emfinger, some of those databases were ridiculous. I remember the first time I got a subscription to Prepstar and was in their database and hadnt heard of 90% of the kids they claimed Miami was after.... LOL that was some sketchy sh*t back then. Still is I guess.

Bishop went to osu.
Kehoe lost the other big time OL who went to Georgia.
And Antoine mirambeau was scared of not qualifying.
