I'm a little more concerned with how our RB's are used than our depth at RB. I don't understand why Duke is/was being ran into the ground. He's not capable of running between the tackles consistently. I would have liked to see him get his 22-25 touches in the passing game, screens, some outside runs, a few times between the tackles and in the return game. I don't understand how we were so concerned with getting him hurt on returns and we continued to run him between the tackles and keep him in on pass protection where he had gotten hurt multiple times earlier in the season. We have our between the tackles RB in Crawford yet he only had 2 carries but had 3 catches. Coley is a great recruiter but so far his play calling has been questionable.
We ran Duke because he's our best player. You can't predict a broken ankle. Gurley's a big dude, and he gets hurt too. RB is a nasty position by nature, which is why you need to stockpile talent there.
You and I had this exchange a couple weeks ago. I said we would eventually lose Duke Johnson because of injury due to being over-worked. What coach Coley did to Duke Johnson this year was criminal and was being called out by folks like me here while it was happening. The kid was too small and too young to be getting 30 carries a game. Moreover, we put him in one back sets and ran him between the tackles on 4th and short. Coach Coley needs to learn the difference between using your best player and the best player for a given situation. 4th and short should be for Mo Hagens, Walter Tucker, etc.
At the end of the day, plenty of us here predicted that Duke Johnson would not last the season and we've been proven correct. We've got a redshirt sophomore offensive coordinator who is learning on the job. He needs to do a better job of roster management. Way better job IMO.
