RB depth is unacceptable

I'm a little more concerned with how our RB's are used than our depth at RB. I don't understand why Duke is/was being ran into the ground. He's not capable of running between the tackles consistently. I would have liked to see him get his 22-25 touches in the passing game, screens, some outside runs, a few times between the tackles and in the return game. I don't understand how we were so concerned with getting him hurt on returns and we continued to run him between the tackles and keep him in on pass protection where he had gotten hurt multiple times earlier in the season. We have our between the tackles RB in Crawford yet he only had 2 carries but had 3 catches. Coley is a great recruiter but so far his play calling has been questionable.

I agree with you about him at kick returner. Drives me up the wall. However if you have situational RB's, then the opposing DC will read your plays like a book. IMO platooning your 3 best RB's keeps people fresh without tipping off the defense. I happen to think we will be pleasantly surprised at the guys we have left. OT needs to step up, and I think he will.

would be nice to have Collins right about now. but it is what it is. This may be the last time you see Miami which such poor RB depth.

We missed on Collins.

Grabbed Yearby and Powell.

I still want some combo of Sony, Cook, Patrick and Scarlett.

All over 195 pounds and can carry the load.

No reason ???? Do you know how easy it must have been to recruit against Miami the last few years?
- Pending NCAA
- Not in the top 25
- Half empty Stadium every week

We might not like where we stand but saying no reason is carxy

True. The sanctions of uncertainty killed us in recruiting many top level guys.

True, people have already forgot about the train wreak Shannon left and the uncertainty of sanctions.

This is why I've been screaming that we absolutely cannot miss on Sony and Cook. We need one, especially after losing Collins last year. This is the University of Miami.

They both are being recruited.

Cook has said Miami is after him the hardest and Sony has said Miami was the only school that stayed on him.

At the end of the day, if they don't want to be here what are you gonna do?

We need a bigger back, a guy who can run between the tackles. When you have a player like Storm Johnson transfer, Danny Dillard and Darion Hall not work out, and just not picking up enough runners every year, we're in this position. Duke is great. Dallas Crawford is good. The rest, though?

Full court press on Sony is a must. Someone drop him off a bag of money.

Nail them to a wall and torture them until they flip.

When you're irrelevant for 10 years, why should kids who don't even remember when you used to be good care about you? That's why winning out and at least getting to the ACCCG and maybe a New Year's Day bowl is so god**** important for the future. Players like Duke, who would bleed for his city and his team regardless of the situation, are the exception. Most kids are impressionable and want to play for winners.

Commentary aside, here's the nuts and bolts of why we're thin at RB:

* Storm Johnson: Im not sure of the specifics. Coach Golden said he wasnt doing what was necessary to be a Cane. Yet, he's doing whats needed to be a UCF Knight. We miss him on the roster.

* Kevin Grooms: Not academically good enough to be a Cane - Got into Marshall.

* Alex Collins: Oh well, south Florida drama.

* Devonta' Freeman: Randy Shannon. SMH

Someone will emerge and we will all shut up by the end of the season.

I was listening to college coach speak at a coaches only meeting. He said the one questions he hates the most from the media and fans is the "Who is going to replace player x?"

He replied "There is no replacing any 1 player. Someone has to run the ball, someone has to throw the ball, someone has to block, someone has to catch the ball. Why do they always ask who is going to replace player x?"

Somebody will do a good job. Miami always has had NFL RBs even in our down years. During these next 6 games someone will make themselves some money.

My memory may be off, but didn't Storm leave under Shannon? I don't remember. Either way, that is another guy we could have desperately used.

Edit: I was wrong. You were right. It was under Al.

We lose Clements and are bringing in Yearby, Powell, and maybe 1 more back.

Soon.

I'm more concerned about safety.

I'm concerned equally about both positions. We really need Carter to develop over the off-season or we could be in trouble.

We ran Duke because he's our best player. You can't predict a broken ankle. Gurley's a big dude, and he gets hurt too. RB is a nasty position by nature, which is why you need to stockpile talent there.

Exactly. All you can ax for is for us to be relentless in recruiting, which we are. You can't kidnap guys.

Storm Johnson left b/c he was 3rd string behind Lamar Miller and Mike James after Spring.... he is more talented then Mike James but he didnt out work him. Lamar Miller went pro after that season, if Storm wouldve figured that one out he probably would still be a Cane.

Its why some of us whined about Collins last year and why we are now whining about Cook. The talent just isnt there. We can try and talk ourselves into thinking what we do have is adequate, but there will come along nights like last night where the charade is exposed for what it is. We need another RB in this current class, it is absolutely necessary.

Sprinkles couldn't stay out of trouble. The Don had no choice.

So ..... I know he is small, but does Elder fit into the solution for this year. The shirt is off and he is said to have been pretty good in high school. Not going to help for VT, but is it worth a look now to have him ready for the ACC Champ game and bowl if we survive the balance of our schedule?
