This is my personal thoughts on QB. You have 3 quarterbacks on the roster, you need one more no matter what. Judd isn’t ready, and as good as I think Luke will be, he’s not ready either.

Which leaves Emory. First and foremost, can’t really judge him based on last year. Freshman quarterback are rarely ready and never look like how they do year 1 and year 3 or 4. It’s the great unknown what he would look like in 2025. But, theres reason to not panic. He will have three years in the system. He knows the playbook. That’s huge. He also just spent a year behind and learning from Cam Ward. Probably the best quarterback we have ever had here. 50+ starts. I think we are forgetting how valuable this year has been for Emory to learn. A good case study of this, John Mateer. Sore subject I know. But he sat behind Cam for 2 years. No one here knew who he was before this year. Arbuckle said it himself, those two years were huge for John. He learned from Cam. Took things he liked and couldn’t do. I don’t know if John Mateer is who he is if doesn’t have those years to develop behind cam.

On the subject of Mateer, it sucks. But I’m convinced we could have offered 10 million, and he still wouldn’t come here. It is what it is.

So what do we do about the 4th arm? Have to bring one in. You have two options.

1. You bring in The Guy to be the starter.
2. You bring in a guy to battle Emory and be the back up. Again, you probably can’t rely on Judd or Luke to be QB2.

So Option 1. You bring in the guy. First thing to point out, you obviously risk loosing Emory to the portal and your back to 3 arms. Idk if he actually would bounce, but has to be considered. So who is that guy and who’s available?

Well Mateer fit that mold. But again, that was always a pipe dream. But who is available and potential? There’s Mendoza. There’s possibly a playoff or fringe playoff guy in that mold, Ewers/Milroe/ Baylor Kid. I’m truthfully not sure who else would be available. Honestly. The other obvious item is the price tag associated there. There’s no Cam Ward available.

For the sake of this post, I’m not here to discuss really who is the guy. There truthfully aren’t many out there in my opinion. And I’m not talking about just in the portal. All of CFB. How many elite QBs are there?

So that leads to option 2. The point of option two is that you are bringing in someone to either take the job from Emory or be a serviceable QB2. I look around CFB this year, and outside of Ward and Sheduer, almost all of the best quarterbacks or playoff ones had their flags before the season.

Rourke (Indiana). 6th year guy. Prior to the year transfer from Ohio where he threw for 2200 yards and 11 TD 5 int.

Kyle McCord. 4th year and was pushed out by Ohio State.

Mateer. 3rd year. Threw 19 passes the prior two years.

Gabriel. 6th year. Lots of production but essentially pushed out by Oklahoma.

Howard. 5th year and pushed out by Kansas State

Leavitt (ASU): 2nd year. Transferred from MSU where he attempted 23 passes.

Jennings (SMU). 3rd year. Only played mop up duty and not previous production.

I can go on and on. But the moral of the story, most of these quarterbacks had little to now production or were pushed out from the previous spot (washed goods). Regardless they got the job done.

Option 2, you either are going with a guy that fits what you want to do and has the tools you see or roll with the Emory. Again, Emory is unknown. I’m not here to say the Emory will be the best QB in the ACC. But like many of the quarterbacks mentioned above, those schools went with them because they knew what they had in those players. They developed. Emory has done just that. Dawson has worked with him for 2 going in 3 years. He sat behind and learned from the greatest quarterback here.

The other most obvious point to option 2 is cost. You’re putting that money elsewhere on the roster. A lot of guys I mentioned performed so well because of the obvious, they were on a good team with a good roster. You invest that money elsewhere to fill out the roster.

No matter what, we need another arm. Idk who it is. I don’t know who the QB is. But again, let’s not panic here yet. ASU probably wasn’t thrilled with Leavitt and that played out fine. Indiana and Rourke. SMU moving form multi year starter Stone to Jennings. Etc etc.

There’s reasons to worry about Emory, but reason to also still feel excited. The most important part is filling out the roster. It’s a great start to the portal but need to close on a few more.

Let’s see what we got with some younger guys in the bowl and spring. And then close out the roster in the spring window. That’s regardless of the QB. Just my opinion. Don’t kill me

Here’s what you’re not considering. For every guy like Mateer and Leavitt who turned out to be really good, there’s 10 other busts you’ve never heard of.

The odds of hitting on a QB simply aren’t good. Miami and Cristobal don’t have the luxury of rolling the dice in year 4.

Cristobal will bring in a QB with experience. He has to.
