QBS in the Portal as of 11/28

John Mateer would be fantastic here, but outside of a big surprise hitting the portal, we need to not discount Emory Williams. I think he could be very very good.

He’s a package deal with his OC

Back up the Brinks truck for a CJ Bailey + Jeremiah Smith combo pls. And a new secondary. And some linebackers. And a new DC.

If he enters the Portal, Mateer makes too much sense. I've heard the rumors about Oklahoma and his OC. We just need a meeting. The best football opportunity is here.

Mateer watched Cam Ward go from a Day 3 pick at Wazzu to a Day 1 star at Miami. We bring back 4 OL and good young skill guys. We'll add a WR in the Portal. He'll run wild here. His release is different, but his game reminds me of Jalen Hurts at Oklahoma.

Don’t get the Bailey love, he stinks
I’m not on board with him being the qb next year but the kid doesn’t stink and has some ability and upside. He is only a true fr and he played solid for a guy who most people thought was a 2-3 year developmental qb

I’m just not seeing a lot of game changer qbs in this year’s portal, barring something crazy.
And I’m not even talking about someone on Cam’s level.

I think it will be hard to find someone that would even compare to Gabriel, Will Howard or even Riley Leonard.

Lot of the names being thrown around wouldn’t even be guaranteed to beat out Emory. Not sure if you all really see something in some of the qbs being tossed around or if we are trying to talk ourselves into thinking they will do well.

Also, I go back to last year and we reportedly got JS the night before signing day. Knowing he was a generational talent, I’d be interested to know how much more did we offer him than OSU - if OSU upped their offer on signing day to beat out or get competitive with our offer, than we messed up by not blowing up our internal salary cap.

Just think if Cam had been throwing to JS this year. Then I think you would have some legit top shelf QBs be intrigued on playing with JS for the next 1-2 years. Would have opened more doors at the very least.

We have proof of concept with Cam, but there are some circumstances that may/may not be the same next year… Will Dawson be here? Will Horton be here? This year, Cam had 5 srs or likely draft eligible wrs/tes to throw to. We won’t have that level of experience next year.
It was NOT about money with J Smith. At the time, Cam publicly committed to the NFL. If he had not flirted with the NFL, perhaps we would have landed J Smith.

Given we couldn't even get to the ACC title game, I'm sure JS feels he made the right decision.
