Proof of Concept at QB

We were very fortunate to land him.

He’s fortunate, too. He was a Day 3 pick before he got here.

Of course he was; he was on a product that received minimum exposure, & was a losing team. Regardless of the stats he put up for WASU, he would’ve needed a strong combine to secure attention. However, there’s a reason he was the #1 QB in the nation in the portal b/c he’s been the truth & proof.

Cam is much more than raw stats; his improvising is something u can’t just teach. He & Pat Mahomes r two of some of the best at this. His ability to avoid sacks, extend plays putting DBs in perilous situations is not a coachable trait; he’s that guy.

No doubt- he got paid like a premium QB for a reason. But the point is that other talented QBs who want to raise their stock can look to his example.

Jalen Hurts is someone who would have loved to come here but couldn’t justify it as a football decision. Ward provides proof of concept that players like that can come here and raise their stock.

I think everyone needs to come to terms with the fact that if you bring someone in like Lagway, he does not have four years of experience like Cam and no matter who we bring they won't have the overall presents of Cam because he's generational. Be prepared for a big learning curve and the loss of a few games because of it.
And if they bring in Lagway, does Nickel not come?

Isn’t our QB room already set w/ Poffenbarger, Williams, Judd. & incoming Nickel?

Who are the big time qbs out there? There really aren’t any. It’s going to be a guy that has ability but most fans won’t be happy about and then he comes here and balls. Most qbs have been like that in the portal. Hooker, penix, nix, daniels, burrow and etc wasn’t consider to be elite qbs when they hit the portal. There isn’t another cam out there. Going to have to take a weigman, stone, salter, arnold and get there best out of them
..or go with Williams, because not one of the possible transfers you named is a sure improvement over Williams.

My view has been that we should acquire upside through the Portal. Just need to see who jumps in.

Lagway is the most impressive physical talent I’ve seen and he is supposed to have good intangibles. Florida is about to go on a losing streak, so we’ll see. Jackson Arnold is another guy who I could see developing like Bo Nix in the right system. Oklahoma is a disaster right now.

Option 1A would be someone like Ward who is already a top-tier quarterback and wants to go to a new level. For me, the next option is the Jayden Daniels/Bo Nix/Spencer Rattler approach.

The proof concept is Cam Ward, period. He’s been nice, & we’re very fortunate before the clock struck midnight he decided to come here.

WSU QB. Again. I live in the area. Absolutely nothing to do here, nice place to raise a family and that’s about it. I don’t know how they get good QBs to come here but for whatever reason they seem to evaluate QBs extremely well.

Arnold intrigues me; & we may have a situation from OSU w/ Air Noland. Lastly, Ward has also helped w/ the perception of Dawson. If Dawson leaves for a HC job, that changes things.

Regardless, I rather not think about tomorrow & enjoy the ride of today.

If Dawson moves on, does the proof of concept change a bit?

Arnold was a name I was going to mention. OU’s OL is worse than FSU’s. He is on his 3rd OC (Lebby, Littrell, and Finley) since enrolling. He was thrown under the bus by his HC and benched when it clearly wasn’t his fault, He took it gracefully and then agreed to burn his possible RS when Veneables had to go back to him after getting embarrassed by Texas.

Dude has the potential to be really good as long as he doesn’t get killed behind that OL. 18 sacks in the last 2 games.
