Profile of next DC

Someone who won’t ask former DT now DE to cover RBs over and over again.

Mesidor should punch Guidry in the face

I was screaming this very statement at my TV on Saturday, in utter disbelief.

Coach Guidry's defense is designed for a under sized front 7, so they have to run games all day up front with stunting and dropping ends, rather than 4 Man pressure. I mean just switch things up, on occasion is one thing to run games upfront, but to have it as your base is a different animal.

Tony White DC Nebraska.

i was on here Pounding the table last time we hired Guidry.

He was Broyles award candidate as DC at Syracuse and then went to Nebraska was Broyles award finalist in 2023 there.

Rocky Long disciple runs an aggressive 3-3-5.

Great recruiter also.
Is he fundamentally sound?

When asked how he felt about giving up al those points after going up 21-0, he emphasized how disappointed he was. Sounded to me it was directed right at Guidry. Slim chance Guidry is a cane next year.

Mario's ability to attract top coordinators....another story
Has Guidry spoken since Suracuse?

Not much he could say. His defense collapsed and allowed a 35-7 run after being spotted a 21-0 lead. Might want to ask Dawson why the offense sputtered after building that 21-0 lead.

Has anyone spoken except Mario, post game? Did he do his Joe Rose show appearance? Isn’t this usually on Monday? Maybe he’ll have another press conference this week but there’s nothing to talk about until the playoff selections are made the following week. Mario can talk about either an upcoming playoff game or a season recap and whatever bowl game Miami will play.

Expect a National Early Signing Day recap though. Mario can talk about all the ‘elite human beings’ he signed.

If anyone's asking, he's my favourite. Learned under Schiano, has done an outstanding job at Minnesota and he may be looking for a way out to go somewhere with more winning potential. Lost close games to Michigan and Penn State, but upset Illinois and USC.

Played the 5th, 19th and 22nd offenses in OFEI (Penn St, USC, Rutgers) and held them to 26, 17 and 26.

Went over the USC tape to see how Minnesota matched up against them. Physical, love to hit and tackle, good pursuit to the ball, made a decent offense look really confused at times.

I just want a DC who has actually coached P5 football and has come from a respectable coaching tree.

Colorado had a horrible defense last year then they went and got a NFL Ravens guy. They improved by a lot.
Their schedule certainly helped. They lost 8 games in 2023. They only won played two of those eight teams this year. Kind of hard not to improve when you replace the six hardest opponents on your schedule with worse teams.

That last line about elite human beings lmao. I'm so sick of this Dipstick and his non stop broken record of clichés. I'm so ready to move on from this Dolt. The fact that I feel this way after a 10 win season and after his 3rd year is very telling. I think a large portion of the fan base had their "Come to Jesus" moment post Syracuse and had the sudden realization that we won't ever be much better than this under Mario. It took a generational talent at QB like Cam Ward to get us to 10-2 against a joke of a schedule. Imagine what we will look like without Ward. Yes we will definitely improve on defense and the offense will be solid but we will still be a highly penalized, undisciplined and poorly coached football team under Cristobal.

So we want someone who has NFL experience, DC experience, and can recruit at a high level?… another round from the bartender

The greatest offense you’ve ever seen at Miami… and Mario assembled it. Even if you credit it mostly to Ward (which I do), he brought us the line, OC, had Horton developed, a mean stable of RBs, and Ward himself was recruited heavily by Mario.

He can get it done, but it took cavemen a while to discover fire. Get the best DC money can buy and we should be a really good team next year. I agree 100% he needs to prove it, but I think he will have us contenders for the playoff year in and out. Get us to respectable status in CFB again and let things snowball.
$$ got Ward and Martinez but I'll give it to him for getting his Columbus cartel to pay for it. Restrepo was Manny's recruit. Arroyo was Manny's recruit. The rest was his. If this is the best offense I've ever seen, then this is the worse defense I've ever seen at Miami. He also assembled that. No one on that defense is Manny's it is all his players with hand picked defensive coordinator. Some bought by the Columbus cartel and some that he failed to develop. Again, this will be his third DC in 4 years. Why can't he seem to figure it especially with how long he takes to make hires? He is incompetent. Mario’s whole philosophy is he needs an abundance of skilled athletes to mask that he is inept at coaching. Oregon fans will tell you the same thing. They don't miss him at all. It is what it is. The concern is, when other teams like Florida and eventually Clemson start upping the bag game, what will Mario fo then when he doesn't have the money advantage? That's the real concern.

My preliminary analysis is in. I don't think I'm going to dig much deeper than this like I would in the past. I'm much more burnt out and I think its going to be much more difficult to find a DC this cycle. The big programs have the best DCs statistically. My numbers brought back Ohio State, Penn State, Texas, ND, Oregon, Alabama, Ole Miss, etc all in the top 15 and they're all paid close to or above $2M so it's not realistic. Maybe Ohio State gives Day the axe for whatever stupid reason and we could luck into Jim Knowles.

Strictly based on my analysis I got it down to 2 proven DCs and didn't include guys at programs where it's not realistic to poach:
1. Scott Symons - SMU DC - When looking at the last 2 seasons I was shocked to find him come in at number 5 overall on my collection of data. SMU as a team was 7th but teams ahead (Penn State and Michigan) had different coordinators between the 2 years. Diaz and Jesse Minter dropped off the list and the current DC at each program was behind Symons.
2. Bryant Haines - Indiana DC - Insane jumps at Indiana in year 1 across the board. Every category I considered he improved. I question their opponents but he's been great dating back to JMU. 4 or 5 consecutive top 10 defenses there too.
3. Nick Benedetto - NIU DC - Tried to limit it to P5 DCs but the numbers from him just stuck out and were hard to ignore. Top 15 across the board and has multiple years in a row of strong data and still improving on it. Rush defense is strong, pass D is strong, gets sacks and turnovers, limits points, and very good on 3rd down

Other P5 candidates
1. Brad White - Kentucky DC - Always going to be on my list. One of my favorite DCs in CFB
2. Clayton White - South Carolina DC - Data in 2024 was elite. Took him a little while to build up to it but I'm guessing they finally got the talent they needed there. Played a good schedule so nothing fluky about it.

For reference - Miami and Guidry came in around the 32nd. Mostly driven by strong yards per rush allowed numbers - 3.5 and 3.8 the last 2 years - roughly top 20 DC in that category. Honestly, everything else from points per game, sack %, yards per pass attempt, etc hovered around the 30-45 range. Better than I expected except for obviously the explosive plays.
