Some observations from Gaby:

-I think the tight end room is in great shape. Elija Lofton is an anomaly. He lacks the prototypical size you would typically see from the position but he will feast in this offense. He can also hold his own at the line of scrimmage. Today, he matched up with Akheem Mesidor on inside run drills and did very well there. The expectations are very high for Lofton.

- From a line of scrimmage perspective, it was clear that freshman Donta Simpson was getting some meaningful reps against starter-level players. Justin Scott continues to impress, as does David Blay with the way that he plays the position at his size.

Some observations from Canesport:

-Justin Scott continues to really look the part of an athletic DT and we think he is well positioned to win a starting job. Also keep an eye on DT Donta Simpson, who despite being a true freshman continues to work his way up the depth chart (although he was too slow off the ball on one inside run drill rep today, as when he looked up the back was already past him). Still, he’s been getting some one reps and had some solid inside run reps and is learning on the go. DE Booker Pickett is also working in with the twos at times and is pushing for an early role.

-At LB we continue to be high on Chase Smith, as he’s looking the part and is pushing for a starting job. The injuries that hampered him earlier in his career appear to have finally gone by the wayside.

-On offense the QB play continues to be inconsistent with Carson Beck out. None of the quarterbacks appears to really be separating themselves as a No. 2 option to Beck.

-S Zechariah Poyser also continues to look really good and seems to be locking down one starting spot with his play.
