Post Game Recap: UNC

Easier said than done...

& I can assure you, if we lose at home to Clemson, we’re not closing out the season on a strong note.

We lose to Clemson, the wheels of this thing will come completely off & the NC ST, FSU & LVille games will be down the drain.

Take that to the Bank & deposit it. There is no scenario where we go from 4-3, to 9-3 or 8-4.
This is my biggest fear because we are banged up on defense big time. Our lack of depth was exposed last night and Clemson is licking their chops. I don’t see us beating them.

How many guys do they have to cover for? Let's face it, we don't have a single cornerback that can cover anyone that has any speed or can get separation. They were like Hans Brinker sticking their fingers in the dyke. Eventually the dyke will bust.

Just look at that sequence where Jaden Davis got a PI penalty against Walker. I thought that PI penalty saved a TD. UNC went back to it the next play and got one.

The only way to hide a mis-matched backfield is to get pressure and quicken a QBs decision time. We did it for the most part in the first half but did not in the second.

Isn't that the role he played against A&M?

This. This been my point about Guidry defense, while everyone has been worried about the front 7. My fear has always been the DBs if Guidry blitzes can't get home. Our safeties absolutely have to play match quarters and Kam gotta rotate to bracket the opponents deep threat. We can not be as aggressive as they have been.

I get the players trust their guys but at some point you should realize ya man's ain't cutting and respect your job as a safety, this goes for guidry too.

Unc spread us out and isolated our LBs against their back and we had no answer. James gotta come into that box with Cloyd and play that hook-curl-flat and provide Run support.

I gotta watch the film again but I don't think any linebacker we put out there had an answer for it. Dline playing selfless football to keep linebackers clean as Guidry requires. Well backers gotta make plays.

If all TVD can do is throw to his first read or to the open guy in 1 on 1 matchups, he's not a good QB - he's just good at throwing the ball to a target. A good QB should inspire confidence from his teammates, have the mental toughness to handle adversity, and have the mental awareness to see the field, understand coverages/read the defense, not stare down his target, and show good judgment in his decision-making. All the things that make you a good QB he doesn't have or hasn't shown.
That's not what he said.

He said, "when they drop back in Quarters & dare TVD to throw it in traffic, he just won’t take what the Defense gives him & check the ball down". That different than first read or the open guy.

Mario overthinks everything. There was a quote in one of the media articles post-GT debacle, an ‘source’ in the program saying Mario ‘focuses on too many things that aren‘t important’. Yeah, just an online sports article, but I believe it is probably true.

One result is of this behavior is the sideline chaos we saw at the end of the GT game. Tonight we see Guidry running nearly to the hashes and throwing his headset while yelling at the referee. No bueno everytime. Draws a key penalty on fourth down, giving UNC an easier opportunity to tie the game late in the second quarter.

When your coaches are undisciplined why expect anything different from your players?

Some may argue, but overthinking is a lack of discipline.
I wouldn't doubt it one bit if he legitimately has OCD

That’s why you hear many successful CEOs say they like to hire people smarter than them. It might be a cliché, but the best coaches hire even better assistant coaches. I’ve never seen a consistently winning football program with a great head coach and an average staff.
Luckily, Mario kind of does that by default

I never said that's what he said. It's what I am saying...and it's that being a good QB is more than being good at throwing the ball to the open guy - and to be fair, he's been good here - but he hasn't shown that he can do much more than that, including what you bolded.

I quoted what you said. You went on to say, "he's just good at throwing the ball to a target". He's shown he's much more than that.

He's admittingly not perfect. The problem is that's what it takes for this team to win.

What the Offense needs more than anything is diversification; It’s too much dependency on just 3 guys to make all the plays, the other WR’s need to have more plays designed to get them the ball & there needs to be more creativity in spreading the ball around.

I am just a fan but THIS seams so obvious. We have TEs that can make plays and some young, hungry and fast kids at WR. I love X but between him and Tez Walker, who you picking to get 17 targets?

YEP.

And …. Let me say something on TVD, and QB’s in general.

We have seen great Qb play from TVD on multiple occasions. He’s made NFL throws, come up with big plays, and shown moxie where he needed to. Every game? No? Every throw? Please.

BUT …. Great Qb play in games is kind of like an IQ test: you can’t fake it. If you score as a genius on an IQ test, and the next day you score as a moron. It doesn’t mean you’re a moron. Because morons never could score as a genius, no matter how lucky they get. The psychiatrists all will tell you, it’s all about the high score, stupid!

For a QB, it’s sort of the same. when you see things like Tvd throwing for a zillion TD’s against TAM, or hitting that 4 route to Jacoby where he stands in and gets roadgraded, but still hits the blade of grass he was aiming for, you can’t say he sucks. Bad qb’s don’t make those kinds of plays, ever. Much less on multiple occasions.

What it means is that you have a talented QB that isn’t consistently playing to a level he should. caleb williams single handily pick sixed his team to an L last night. Drake Maye looked like kirby freeman in the first half last night against an average secondary.

Neither of those guys suck. Neither does TVD.

Asking wether Tvd is a good or bad Qb, or if he has “it” at this point in his career, (whatever that means to message board fans), is asking the wrong question. The question we should be asking, if we think about this like a logical and knowledgeable coach would, is WHY does a guy with NFL arm skills and size, who works hard, holds himself to high standard, and often shows great play, have the sort of lapses and in game performance issues that he does?

You get to that answer, then you’re on to something meaningful.

Louisville is going to have a field day unless something changes. And Duke is going to be a really tough one. FSU is probably an L. Clemson I'm actually more optimistic about. But knowing them, theyll probably play their hearts out this weekend and somehow look like SB champs. So if Coach Cristobal can't coach them to fight back after they've gotten punched in the face, he's no better than Diaz tbh. Same outcomes with better talent: 7-6

Do we know that to be the case? If so, he’s totally cooked.

Who’s gonna want to coach with him… he already had a bad rap and a tough time getting coordinators to want to work with him. Frankly, I think he got lucky with Dawson and Guidry… I assume Zo was involved there.
Wait... Did you just ask if the head coach of a Division 1 college football team knew for sure how many timeouts the other team had left? On what planet does the head coach not know how many other timeouts the other team has? How would that be excusable?

He seems to get in his head and down on himself pretty easily. He doesn't rally the team. He scores a touchdown and goes to his little corner. (just observations from a TV which may or may not be true). But we can all say for sure that he does not carry himself with the moxie of someone like a Caleb Williams who can almost will his team to victory on an injured leg. He is a very skillful player (and probably intelligent and knowledgeable) without the ability to cope in unfortunate situations. And, that's where the sports psychologists should be intervening. When you can unlock that self-confidence and curb your anxiety, you can perform at a higher level more consistently

You would have hated Bill Walsh for his “lack of discipline”.

That's a **** shame!
We need to change our nickname from to the U to highlight tape. If you wanna get drafted just play Miami and they will be your highlight tape. Im back on MOPE status man please win Miami I can’t stand this ****!!!

Did Bill Walsh micromanage everyone? My comment isn’t related to focusing on small details that matter but comments read that Mario can focus on about things that don’t matter. At least at that moment. Just a comment in the press, so take it for what it’s worth.
