Is Miami physically ready to deal with Florida? I don't think that question was answered tonight...... Grown man ish coming in next week
That's the best summary of the thread. I certainly couldn't project big points out of our offense after attending the game tonight. Those horizontal passes to Hurns need to be a one-week ruse. Florida will maul those plays. And they won't work to set anything up downfield. Pure waste against a top opponent. I was hoping for decisive darts out of play action and exploring the middle of the field. That was all but absent tonight. Maybe we were concealing it. Always difficult to tell with a new coordinator.
Otherwise:
* The offensive line as a group always seems to be less than the individual parts suggest. I find myself rooting to avoid 3rd and short
* Waters and Crawford are simply reliable. They'll grab the ball and make the proper cut. Time to make more use of them
* New punter looked great. Extremely relaxed. That was an extremely advanced move for his age, to intentionally put backspin on the pooch punt. Some punters a decade older can't make that adjustment. It landed a foot too deep, which was a darn shame. At the stadium you could see the spin and knew it would bounce back when it landed. He also had a nice punch delivery to kickoffs. But our final punt protection was troubling. FAU nearly got there. A rugged team like Florida figures to either block a kick or two, or come extremely close. We'll need to be at max intensity to avoid at least one disaster in the kicking game
* Goudis got great leg on some kicks but all but muffed others. One of his extra points wouldn't have traveled another 5 yards if needed
* I was amazed how many people were aware of the spread and rooted for a touchdown on our drive that ended at the 1. One guy near me was stunned to silence when Edwards fell shy. The guy made no secret all night that he had given the points
* Perryman was easily juked a few times. If he's the quarterback spy, I'm not entirely comfortable we won't be gashed by Driskel
* We looked bigger on the defensive front but I didn't get a chance to scrutinize everyone individually. Unfortunately FAU ran very few base plays. Everything was out of the shotgun. Florida won't be shy to test our midsection. That in itself may decide the outcome.
* Morris looked like Morris. He's been pushed too high on this forum, and by some prominent draft analysts.
* Crowd was strong. It's laughable to believe the partisanship next week will be 50/50. That's a classic case of taking a trend and pushing it much too far. If the result drifts against us, then the 30% Gator faithful will own the energy and noise late
* FAU had an impressive secondary, other than a handful of plays. Well prepared and aggressive. It certainly won't be the weakest group we face all season. There will be games in which we'll run free in the secondary considerably more than tonight
* Figueroa made a couple of textbook tackles and Burns effortlessly knocked away that endzone pass late in the game. I wish the young guys had been out there one or two more series
* Crowd was good and team won comfortably but overall something was missing. A team on the upswing with plenty of returning starters would normally play much better and more energized than this in the opener
