Please no more Stretch run plays

We get little no yards. The past two weeks the running play we get positive yards on is in the pistol and a quick handoff up the gut or between the tackles.

We need to pound it up the gut of FSU. If we can control the clock, we have a much better chance.

I love the position we are in. all the pressure is on **** and FSU. No way they can lose to this Miami team, :)

Who's ****? I like the name, just don't know who it is.

There is a place for zone blocking stretch plays. We just can't get carried away with running them constantly. I think Coley will have some wrinkles that he has yet to roll out for his old time. It is going to be exciting!!

^^^This

From Wake nose guard Nikita Whitlock: "I think that (offensive coordinator) came out and really figured out what we were doing and was able to do some things off that," Whitlock said, referring to James Coley. “I mean they ran the stretch (play) the last two drives and killed us with it. I don’t know what he did different. They were running the stretch all day and we were stopping it. "I think they made a halftime adjustment to what we were doing and it worked well for the last two drives. And that just killed us."

Well that's encouraging

Oh Oh, coming from an opposing outstanding player such a compliment should at least slow down the Coley haters.

Whitlock's quite is interesting. Anyone go back and see how the stretch plays were different?

I didn't see anything different in the blocking on zone plays. From what I remember, the only "big play" off the stretch was an 8 yard run by Crawford, which probably caught them off guard because he had barely (2x) run it prior to that. Duke had a 17 yarder or so, but it was off a counter. Maybe I'll check tomorrow, but it sounds like he was just caught off guard that we went away from tendency so clearly.

I can see us running a lot of plays that will temper their aggressiveness. Quick snaps, counters, screen passes to Duke, draw plays, etc. That, and running right at them...smash mouth football, is what we have to execute. Andre Williams, the RB from BC had over 150 yards against them. This game is on Coach D. We can and will score on them.

In my Mens Warehouse' George Zimmerman voice...."I guarantee it".

UTOUGH kicked in. That's all.

zone stretch is pretty successful in the NFL, and those defenses are faster than FSU's

of course, the offensive lineman are also more athletic

I really think McDermott is the big weakness on the oline

The NFL is a passing league. Running games are pretty much an afterthought in that league. And you're right that you've got the cream of the crop athletically on the OLs in the NFL. Get a slow OL in college, and match them up against a fast D and ask them to run laterally, and you're going to have problems.

Not so sure that Wake is a great barometer, as they don't recruit from the same pool of athletes that fsu does. Not even close. What we did against Wake's 3rd rate slow athletes might not translate to working against fsu just like what we did against some of the poor athletes from earlier in our schedule didn't necessarily translate.

It's a fair and natural point. Except, doesn't the same apply to other stuff? What we did successfully inside against Wake's baby-sized DL might not translate to the stout, assignment scheme of FSU (with plugs, athletic 3 and 5 techs + 285 pound DEs). Boston College had success early on against FSU by literally keeping them off-balance. I think you guys are right in that the quick-hitters have to be used (mixed and matched in there).

I'm calling Hollyhood or Courcy out to give us a perspective on inside and outside zone schemes.

Good point. And, sure, it absolutely applies. I'm not saying NEVER run stretch plays. I just wouldn't go into this game with that as our bread and butter.

I agree that we absolutely need to keep them off balance. Inside, outside, and Morris will absolutely need to keep drives alive instead of sailing a 3rd and 5 pass to a wide open receiver over his head and wasting a valuable possession.

Much of this game will come down to whether or not we can keep drives alive and make the easy passes and easy plays and not shoot ourselves in the feet too often. When you're a 22 point dog on the road, you almost have to be perfect and play a super clean game.

they are smalland fast. We should send that big OL right at them. Over and Over again.

Preach it.. I'd love nothing more than to run power all game long. They know it's coming.. but what can they do about it? Of course that's assuming SH is lined up at RT & either Linder/Wheeler are at C.

you can't change your offensive identity in the 8th game of the season. for better or worse, the outside zone IS our base run. the rest are constraint plays, with the exception of power, which i would love to be some kind of secret weapon, but almost certainly is not.

everything builds off the outside zone for us. i wish we wouldnt run it out of the ******* pistol, but it is what it is.

Continue Lu.

Con que? With what? I got 8 more minutes before my lunch break is over and I have to a head to a meeting, so correct me if you saw something else. I'm trying to get discussion goin', if you can't tell.

I'm sayin...

Good work. Keep it goin. LOL

I thought you meant other games. I was like, man, I dunno if I have enough time for that.

Here are some things that could be viewed as negative, but I'm gonna keep my Ibis hat on (the one Duke wore after he won the State 'ship) and try to look at this stuff optimistically:

- There has to be some reason Coley insists on balanced sets. Is it a tendency shown to be broken when we motion into trips?
- We had a good amount of guys open on underneath crossing routes against WF. I didn't notice it as much when I watched live. Morris' PA off the "zone stretch" is pretty solid and, since they run that play so **** often to the left side (short or wide), I absolutely have to think it's setup for something. I'm gonna be optimistic.
- I don't have an exact #, but there has to be a reason we run the ball like 80%+ of the time Walford goes in motion? I'm gonna be optimistic.
- When we audibled and Duke shortened his distance from the LOS, it was a pass. Would like to see the same tendency and give him (or Hagens) a quick dive.
- Have I missed it or have we simply not shown an unbalanced set? With the success BC had early on w/ this formation and our depth at OL, why hasn't this been shown or done? I'm gonna be optimistic.
- I think it was you or NewYorkCane who noted that we're running verticals with quick outs. What in the **** happened to the flood concept? Morris actually throws that post route (last year, the deep in to Scott) decently well, so where is it? I'm gonna be optimistic.

There are more that I have on the notepad back in my office. The general theme is that I saw Coley break tendency in the second half and it gave me a glimmer of hope that all of the stuff written above will be broken at the right time: this week and next.

Agreed. Where is the Bunch formation or the stack where somebody is running a Post/Seem/Dig?... It seems we abandoned this for the past couple of games when it was highly successful in the early on.

The Miami stretch is to THE U as student body right was to USC years ago. I is a staple. Execution might be a little lacking and that again can actually come from Morris' ankle problem. Against FSU speed what will matter is man on man battles. It is more about beating them AT the edge rather than TO the edge. That said, I would not mind a few fake stretch plays with a counter to FB. Noles will be laying in wait for Duke, so it might be a good time to smash them in the mouth with a big boy while they are looking for Duke. A couple 10 or 15 rumbles up the middle might pull those DE and LBs in some. And please let's throw to the TE. FSU has NEVER been able to cover TEs(not that we can anymore either).
