Players vs Coaching

Trust me when I tell you, it's really hard to coach around poor CB play.
If CB's are routinely losing their 1-on-1 situations then that's likely a talent issue.
And no matter how good the coaching is, kids will still get out there and do their own thing from time to time. Happens to all coaches. I know for a fact that Jackson doesn't teach that BS that we saw from our CB's on Saturday. Neither did Addae. I've watched both of them coach our CB's.

My biggest concern isn't the CB play though. I'm okay with our CB's getting beat from time-to-time IF EVERYTHING ELSE IS TIGHT. If a defense is really stout in between the hashes (i.e. good DL, LB and Safety play) and the offense HAS to go outside to generate any plays, that strategy is still LOW PERCENTAGE.

We're not giving up 30ppg simply because of our CB play. The issue is that our defense can't hang their hat on ANYTHING. They don't do anything particularly well.
what's funny is that everyone said we were a good run d and then tech destroyed us on the ground. then Cuse beat us through the air. we dont do a single thing.

He was the dumbest mother ****** in the building. Cover 1 against a team that likes to run mesh and throw contested jump balls LOL make it make sense hahaha

Probably didn't want them to bleed the clock like GTech did and Wake tried to do.

It failed, but I guess that was the strategy.

I think it's mainly players, and yeah yeah yeah I'm the Guidry apologist or whatever.

We replaced two NFL safeties with a nickel playing out of position, and a lightly recruited 3-star CB who's been converted to a safety.

We were forced to play Porter out of position at nickel.

We also had to rely on a Marshall transfer taking snaps at CB.

Safety is not a position where you want to rely on inexperienced guys.

The bottom line is that our secondary is not talented. It just isn't.

Powell: Former walk-on nickel playing safety
Harris: Mid 3-star CB playing safety
Markeith: JAG who isn't physical
Patterson: Has promise as a thumper, but he's a true freshman

That's your safety rotation.

At corner:

Porter: WVU transfer
Richard: Vandy transfer (injured)
Hill: Marshall transfer
OJ: stud, but still a true freshman who wasn't even in for the spring
Brown: missed 10 games

That is objectively a BAD secondary.

We can say we're Miami and we have all this talent. No the f*** we don't.

Secondary recruiting has been a massive failure by Mario.

We need a big leap from guys like Patterson and Dylan Day, and we need AT LEAST one impact guy from the Portal. And honestly, probably two.
How did it get to this point? We need to throw crazy numbers at this problem because like the old school playas used to say one is too close to none (we just lost our only top recruit safety in '25 class so holds true).. The whole room needs a complete overhaul. When broken down like this we have no true safety room just an in box thumper

I reallllllly want to know who greenlit this like yea, we good to go this year. We legit still have guys saying we only missed a nickel from portal last year, we was gucci everywhere else..

Would’ve welcomed them running the rock they aren’t a good running team but who am I. I’m not a DC with 3 DUIs who is clearly drinking again

Supposedly Addae was a bad recruiter.

But at the end of the day, it's on Mario.

I'll give him a pass for the '22 transition class.

But the '23 class was weak in the secondary:

Damari Brown — jury is still out
Robert Stafford — trending toward JAG; he's supposed to be a speedster, but he looks slow on kickoff coverage
Robby Washington — converting from WR; we'll see
Kaleb Spencer — transferred to VTech
Dee Freeney — JUCO guy; did he ever even make it in?

That was a BAD haul.

The '24 class:

Patterson — Flashed a little, but not really the rangy type
OJ — stud
Dylan Day — has looked good on ST, and has pretty good verified speed; promising
Ryan Mack — no idea
Isaiah Thomas — no idea

I like the '25 class (although we just lost Stubbs), but you can't rely on a true freshman to save us.

Ideally:

OJ continues to develop
Brown is healthy and continues his development
Washington emerges as a playable nickel
Patterson locks up the SS spot
Dylan Day takes a leap

It's really shameful that it's come to this in the secondary.

Gotta hit the Portal hard.

Hopefully we can flip DJ Pickett.

THIS!!!!! Ur a real coach and know ball. I wish the coaches would pull the guys messing up for the younger guys. We already suck and make a ton of mistakes why not play the younger better athletes ?

On the coaching side watching Fran Brown’s staff made me realize something. They legit looked like a brotherhood out there with fire and passion. Not afraid to hold each other accountable old school way & celebrate with each other too… I think we need that type of bond. Obviously competent, schematically sound , etc.
