Players vs Coaching

our DBs
do you guys think they are just that bad or simply extremely poorly coached and used in suboptimal ways
under Golden we used to claim that our D line was trash
then the same D line make a complete 180 in just 1 year under Manny's scheme and Kul's coaching
can we expect that type of change with simply changing the coaches
or are they simply jags
this secondary makes me with we had Gurvan Hall and R Knowles back there
Its a mix of both, they aren't that talented and the joke of a DC never did anything to at least help them out and mask some of the athletic deficiencies/Coach getting lined up/giving up the edge with stunts etc

It doesn't matter. Like every other business, except government, this is results based. Guidry gets paid more than 99% of us to coach football. He's not getting it done for whatever reason. It ultimately falls on him.

Our talent isn't great for sure, but U of Ohio and UConn held Styracuse to fewer points. Holy Cross held Syr to the same number of points as us. Are folks saying out talent is worse than Ohio and UConn and on par with Holy Cross?

Only 3 out 17 ACC defenses gave up more points per game against in-conference opponents that us. We have less talent on defense than every single one of Cal, UNC, BC, Duke, GT, Louisville, VT, Pitt, Syracuse or SMU?

And now on the recruiting board we're at risk of losing some of our top commits on defense. Presumably they see what some on this board can't see...they want no part of UM's defense. If they had faith it was a well coached defense presumably they'd believe they can be part of the solution. That's what Mario has always been able to sell. But if they have no trust in the system or DC that doesn't work.

Mario doesn't lose recruits last minute. And he's not losing them on the offensive side. He's at risk of losing them on the defensive side. Hopefully we can hang on.

Trust me when I tell you, it's really hard to coach around poor CB play.
If CB's are routinely losing their 1-on-1 situations then that's likely a talent issue.
And no matter how good the coaching is, kids will still get out there and do their own thing from time to time. Happens to all coaches. I know for a fact that Jackson doesn't teach that BS that we saw from our CB's on Saturday. Neither did Addae. I've watched both of them coach our CB's.

My biggest concern isn't the CB play though. I'm okay with our CB's getting beat from time-to-time IF EVERYTHING ELSE IS TIGHT. If a defense is really stout in between the hashes (i.e. good DL, LB and Safety play) and the offense HAS to go outside to generate any plays, that strategy is still LOW PERCENTAGE.

We're not giving up 30ppg simply because of our CB play. The issue is that our defense can't hang their hat on ANYTHING. They don't do anything particularly well.

i have to disagree
we are good at stunting
no one stunts like us

You all wish Banda was still here, don't ya?
****. Ya had to go there. Just..****. LOL. The bartender absolutely got the last laugh. Might not have been the GOAT safety coach but he could recruit his a$$ off, he was passionate about coaching, and kids seemed to genuinely want to play hard for him. We are not seeing any of that right now from that safety room.

Would you say that this defense only prepeares the minimum amount? It looks like it to me.

He officially spent more time coaching than bartending but this board could never get over it because the false prophets declared he sucks. Meanwhile, safeties who actually played for him hold him in high regard because they genuinely improved and were well prepared. He excelled at teaching film study and understanding assignments. Our breakdown now beyond talent is in this defense, the entire back 7 must know each others responsibilities and communicate their keys. None of that is happening. There’s hardly ever a snap where our LB and S aren’t yelling at each other while coaches are jumping up and down. So,
IMO, it’s 60% coaching.

Banda was a ok in my book

I think it's mainly players, and yeah yeah yeah I'm the Guidry apologist or whatever.

We replaced two NFL safeties with a nickel playing out of position, and a lightly recruited 3-star CB who's been converted to a safety.

We were forced to play Porter out of position at nickel.

We also had to rely on a Marshall transfer taking snaps at CB.

Safety is not a position where you want to rely on inexperienced guys.

The bottom line is that our secondary is not talented. It just isn't.

Powell: Former walk-on nickel playing safety
Harris: Mid 3-star CB playing safety
Markeith: JAG who isn't physical
Patterson: Has promise as a thumper, but he's a true freshman

That's your safety rotation.

At corner:

Porter: WVU transfer
Richard: Vandy transfer (injured)
Hill: Marshall transfer
OJ: stud, but still a true freshman who wasn't even in for the spring
Brown: missed 10 games

That is objectively a BAD secondary.

We can say we're Miami and we have all this talent. No the f*** we don't.

Secondary recruiting has been a massive failure by Mario.

We need a big leap from guys like Patterson and Dylan Day, and we need AT LEAST one impact guy from the Portal. And honestly, probably two.

Both. Some players can’t play and Guidry sucks. #1, #7 should never play another snap here

IMO Guidry gambled against Syracuse in the second half. Seems like we played more single high than in the first half where we were forcing them to throw underneath.

Guidry played a ton of Cover 1 Idky. I really have no clue how Mario allowed him to never adjust anything like it makes 0 sense to me if the guys u have in stink play the backups who are younger and faster and make it simple to help them play faster. Nothing we did was hard but the players looked lost or they are dumb. It was crazy it seemed like we called 5 total plays on D all year and still had miscommunication lol

He was the dumbest mother ****** in the building. Cover 1 against a team that likes to run mesh and throw contested jump balls LOL make it make sense hahaha
