We sign 3-5 OL each class, with varying numbers between IOL and OTs. That makes for 15-20 OL on the roster, of which FIVE get to start. OL is the only position other than QB in modern football that doesn’t sub out. Therefore, there really isn’t an OL rotation as I’ve seen some guys mention. There may be situational snaps (heavy sets and special teams) and there may be injuries, but if you’re not in that starting five, you’re likely not seeing much action. Thrown in the fact that OL takes more time than most positions to develop simply because there is a lot of physical growth (pause) and strength gains to be had during the first two years and you’ll see most of the truly elite college OLs are loaded with seniors and juniors. There are most definitely exceptions (Cici), but overall what I said is true. In the case of Samson, he got hurt his freshman year, then got recruited over by Bell. He also has a prototypical OT body, meaning he’s not competing for one of five OL spots; he’s competing for one of two OT spots. Cici isn’t moving. He’s likely a day 1 pick. Maybe he goes after 2025 and that would free up a spot for Samson, assuming he sticks. Maybe Samson beats out Bell this spring and into fall, but I find that unlikely.
For those questioning M&M, reread my point about only five starting spots. I’m not sure if Samson is OL#6 or #16 because I’m not at practice. However, based on what we do know, it’s likely that he’s just not as good as Bell and Cici.
