Our Safeties: biggest problem on this team.

You think this year´s bad? Who the fvck is going to play safety for us next season? Kacy Rodgers, Armbrister and HIghsmith will be the only ones on the roster. Maybe the underwhelming Rayshawn Jenkins? Gives me nightmares thinking about it. I pray there´s some juco kid out there who can come in immediately.

R. Jenkins isn't even on campus yet, so I'm not sure how he is underwhelming. From all accounts the kid is a very good athlete that should develop into a good S for us. Agree with your sentiment however, we are going to need true freshman that can come in and play immediately.

I have faith in our incoming class and who will be there after Ray Ray and Vaughn depart. AG is a master mind. he will develope the current players. dont sleep on Rodgers and Armbrister they will come into their own. People change once they become leaders and play a key role. People change and do great things when thrown in the fire. Just have faith in AG... Rodgers, Armbrister will become valuable to us come the 2013 season. Watch what i tell yah... Highsmith on the other hand {shruggs} he is a marginal player to me... def not the player is father was... plus he came in as a QB. He has shown some life and toughness on the field though. I could be wrong about him but in Highsmith's case i'd love to be wrong. As for our current starters, Ray Ray and Vaughn will have a steller year... just watch and see they will bring it all together. VT will have some picks maybe even pick 6's and RRA will cause some fumbles with some big time hitting. His angles and speed are a little suspect but better IQ and smarts about his game will do him some good.

knowing what their limitations are the coaches need to put them in positions to succeed. like everyone's favorite coach once said "you can't trade 'em"

I agree with you, but with the limitations of our S, Coach D will be stuck again playing a bend don't break style because he will be afraid to blitz knowing what he has playing center field. I hope I'm wrong and both VT, and RRA have huge senior years, just not expecting it. I hoenstly would love to see what RRA could do at TE, seems like he may have been able to find a home there earlier in his career.

i don't think a bend but don't break defense is the only alternative to a blitzing defense. can be aggressive in coverage while dropping 7 into coverage. play CBs tight to the line of scrimmage with safety help over the top. forces the QB to actually have to be able to throw accurately - even if the coverage isn't great. giving up hitch routes and WR screens all day just makes it too easy.

which i didnt understand at all with our d....it was like taking candy from a baby...literally..and it actually caused us a game or 2....Maryland being one of them.

Imma be honest...CORCH...is a better d coach than D'ONOFRIO...

Coach D needs to show me something this year...mix up his playcalling..get a little more aggressive..

Playing your cb 8yds off the wr isnt doing them any justice...it was comical watching that last yr..as we made BUMS look good at qb...even Bethune's qb.

Do people just forget McGee vs Maryland, RRA vs VTech, etc? The few times we played what you suggested we got toasted immediately for touchdowns. The thought of Williams and McGee manned up tight with no range S like RRA and VT isn't all that appealing.

Fwiw, Coach D'Onfrio is thought of pretty highly in the coaching community. I promise you that what we had to do last year wasn't what he wants but you have to work with your personale. I know stats don't always tell the story but our scoring D stats were pretty good overall and real good the last 6 games.

We are going to have major issues this year with pass rush, average S play (if that), and young CBs but I expect improvement. Although I think we will see more press coverage I'm guessing you will probably be disappointed in Coach D again this year with the limitation we have

VT and Ray Ray are what they are. They have been mediocre for several years now. They are far from our biggest problem. I think that prestigious honor, assuming we find someone to play corner serviceably this year, will fall to the D-Line and linebackers. We have no depth in the front 7 whatsoever.
As for safeties next year, I actually like Jenkins. And between all the bodies we are bringing in this year at corner and hopefully Jamal Carter etc. from the next class someone will emerge that can play safety.

remember McGee came back from a pulled hamstring the play before he got beat deep. once I saw McGee playing tight coverage with no safety help (wasn't about range of the safety - he just was on the other side of the field altogether) I knew what was coming. Maryland coaches had to notice that the guy who sat out almost 2 quarters had just come back in and was getting zero help. just wasn't smart to put him out there like that with no help.

Even if they do, we won´t have anyone behind them except for true freshman and possibly RJenkins, a kid who according to folks who watched him live shrinks away from contact. And even that (Rodgers and Armbrister "coming into their own") is just hypothesis/exaggerated optimism/wishful thinking. Last time I saw Rodgers on the field he was "making" one of the worst defensive plays I have ever seen anywhere at any level. Hardly a sound basis for optimism.

What´s Demar Dorsey up to these days?

Rogers will be alright... Outside of that horrific play against FSU, he had a good game... He just gets killed for cjoking on that one play... The kid is good... Hopefully he can stay healthy and take his game to the next level... As far as Ray and VT they are the least of our worries because if our front 4 doesnt get any penetration they'll be leading the team with tackles... We need to worry about our Dline and backers... Hopefully Cain has gotten stronger and Gaines has learned how to play the middle...

i feal like in the next couple years recruiting classes we need to put our best athletes on defense. were just not athletic and talented enough back their i think

Agree, but then you take away from the skill positions on offense. The problem was that we missed on way too many kids under the previous regime and are left with Freshman and Sophmore playing tons of snaps.

ya but part of me would rather have the playmakers on defense then offense.

With being in S Fla, Miami should never have any problems finding playmakers on both offense and defense.

It just got even worse for 2013:

Not that my hopes were terribly high for Thurston, but at least he was listed at safety. WTF are we planning on doing there? Have to think that Deon Bush to safety is pretty much a given.

I really hope they don't do that to Bush, his ceiling is much higher at CB and that's where he should be playing. I'm sick of kids having to play out of position because of depth issues.

Same here. But who else plays there? Even if they move Bush and Rayshawn Jenkins to safety, that´s just 3 non-freshmen.

Witt may have the athleticism to play S, but you are right. At this point we have RRA, VT as SR's. AJ as a JR., Swassey, Rodgers, and Jenkins. That's not a promising depth chart at S.

And I am more worried about 2013. Jenkins to safety is not a done deal, reports are he shied away from contact vs private school comp, not a good sign. PLus he´s nothing special as an athlete anyway.

2013 safety depth chart:

Highsmith...????
Rodgers.....????

Sleepless nights ahead. 2013 is Golden´s 3rd season and 3rd class at Miami.

There HAS to be a plan. No way AG moves forward without adjusting to the reality of the safety position.

Hope Jenkins works out. If he does, then Fish and mfcanes will have been totally fackin wrong on him. They have strongly predicted his excessive softness will prevent him from making an impact at UM.

Just for the record, they have both said that his softness and his lack of athleticism will prevent him from making an impact.
