Our defense is bizarre

Not really the case. Virginia Tech mauled us with the outside run game, not in between the tackles. Also Louisville had some success running but had to abandon the run to keep up with our offense. They didn’t have a choice. Cal averaged 2.9 yards per carry.. Duke averaged 3.0. FSU averaged 4.8 but that’s mostly because they had a 40 yard run on a botched quarterback sneak. Otherwise they would have gotten 3.4 yards per carry.

Ironically, the one game we couldn’t stop the run was our best defensive performance against the pass in conference play (not counting FSU’s garbage quarterbacks). Drones threw the ball 33 times but only averaged 5.5 yards per attempt.
They had success on outside runs, yes, but they were equally if not more successful on runs between the tackles. I counted only 2 unsuccessful runs for VT between the tackles. The 55yd TD for Tuten was right up the gut, and happened because the LG threw Mesidor out of the gap, while the C was free to neutralize Popo behind him. Drones had a few successful designed runs up the middle as well.

And this likely would have been a 75 yard TD up the gut for Tuten had Drones handed the ball off like he should have. #15 is the only guy who has a chance to make a play.

I stand by what I said - we have issues against the run because of our lack of size - pause - and strength on the interior of the DL. VT exploited those issues. They haven't come to the fore in recent weeks because our pass defense has been handing out explosive plays like candy.

I love our chances in any track meet/shootout game, regardless of whether we get our pass defense sorted. We have the best offense and the best QB in the country, and we've proven that's nothing going to keep our offense down for long. I think the way we get beat this year, if we do, is by getting the ball run down out throats like Michigan did to Washington last year.

Whether King is healthy or not I expect GTech to feature the RB Haynes a ton, and Syracuse has finally realized they need to run LeQuint Allen a lot more and drop McCord back less. Those should be good tests for our run defense. If we're fortunate enough to get the playoff and play a team like UGA/Ohio State I suspect those teams will be more than happy to run straight at #3/99/57/98 (he at least has a ton of potential to get better by EoY) on the interior and have a lot of success doing so.

Defense has been terrible but don’t think it’s really fair to jump on one comment. He’s provided tons of insights in his interviews and press conferences, most of it pretty candid
im mostly judging it off how we perform esp in first halves of games. its obvious hes not great at the unexpected, but the issue is we found ourselves losing at half in 3 of 5 acc games so far and 2 of them were at home.

Yep I’m with you. It’s fair. At this point anyone arguing facts is just trying to spin it

It’s a bad defense and it’s not gonna get any better this year it is what it is

What im having trouble understanding is. CIS has come up with several “patch” solutions over past 3-4weeks theoretically. And i would never doubt the wisdom of the psychos on this board, but how the **** has the D minds of jason taylor, Nichols, guidry, DB coach, etc not figured out the patch fix?!?!
Jason Taylor's defenses at STA were weird and completely unsound... so he's no X & O's savant himself.
The DB coach worked with Guidry before so he probably shares the same opinion on where the blame lies.

Most coordinators are married to a system that they wholeheartedly believe in. They may think that the patch fixes are new kids. 🤷🏻‍♂️

While that may be true on some level, talent isn't the reason that guys are running wide open versus our defense at times. That's miscommunication, bad eyes, bad alignment, etc... not talent.

The opposition is going to make plays occasionally. They're on scholarship too. That's to be expected. But ALLOWING them to make plays by failing at the fundamentals is frustrating.
