OT - UNC has hired Belichick

College football HC is a **** of a lot more work than NFL HC.
Only if you care about long-term success. If you just want to only portal shop yearly and have a nice slush fund backing you up, you may not have to work so hard. And unlike the NFL there is basically no limits in place for talent acquisition.... And even if there were there aren't rules BB isn't willing to bend or break....

They're literally barely going to care about HS and just get like 20 portal guys per year lol.

If you can deal with NFL egos and attitudes you can deal with college kids imo

It’s a big win for UNC
He said he wants to get away from the politics of the NFL and I think he’ll find it’s worse in college.

Parents, high school coach egos, boosters buying the players. There’s just less professionalism and I think coaching wise X’s and O’s are just less important imo.

Probably most valid post in this thread. It could go a lot of ways.

But it says a lot that he’s going from the majors to the minors. And it’s not like he’s doing it out of principle

Him and Lombardi are smart and big names in the football world, so it might be foolish to bet against them. But also they have no college experience and it’s a different game in a different world. Even simple stuff like practice time limits.
College ball is an entirely different world.
Although NIL is bringing it more in line with the NFL so....

Could be a problem.

Mario's forte is recruiting and for years February signing days were crucial to teams and now the early December signings. Things are different now with the portal. Most NFL coaches want to simply coach and many have avoided college coaching because of the pressures to recruit. I think that the portal influenced Belichick to take the North Carolina job knowing he can plug holes quickly via the portal. His pro reputation will make him attractive to NFL aspiring kids and defining talent has become a lot easier via the portal.

On top of that the portal has created parity ala Vanderbilt beating Alabama and also can be a curse if you don't understand talent. Note fsu this year versus last year, the portal giveth and taketh away. I hope at some point loyalty sprouts its head and players go to programs they want to create winning for the good guys.

I am curious how the portal works though. If a Hurricane enters the portal can Miami negotiate a better NIL to keep him or is he locked out of returning. Did Washington get more NIL money? Do some players actually get millions of dollars as mentioned in some posts. Is the NIL a definitive amount or does it hinge on NAME, IMAGE and LIKENESS events? Officially can a coach approach a competitor’s player and recruit him and suggest he go to the portal? or even unofficially does it happen?

I fear that recruiting high school athletes has diminished in value Making Mario less valuable and enabling Belichick, I find it hard to get excited about our new recruits as I watch players, I was anxious to see in a Hurricane uniform is not as compelling as it was before the portal.

In order to compete with one hand tied behind its back, any ACC program is going to have to be exceptionally organized and run like an NFL franchise. And you’ll have to compensate for a lack of top end talent and depth with coaching. Anyone who thinks this is a bad hire for UNC is nuts.

Not a bad hire but when he bolts in two years for the NFL , gets his guaranteed payout of 30 million and leaves UNC in the hands of his son, Steve Belicheck, it might not be viewed as such a good deal.

I realize this response is tongue in cheek but I don't get the obsession people have with Marios salary and budget ... you do realize we are still outside the top 10 in coaches salaries, facilities, and NIL right?
Not this guy, does zero research.

Every time I scroll past this thread my eyes see "UNC has fired Belichick" and it doesn't feel out of place.
