We don't need to make up for anything.
It's a brand new team every year. Each year is its own challenge: 20+ players leave, 20+ players arrive, the remaining 60+ get better (usually). We have to consistently make sure that the 20+ that arrive are better than the 20+ that leave - Cristobal has done that so far.
OSU, ND, Oregon all picked up expensive portal QBs this offseason. People are already competing with us there.
That's a nice and clean way of looking at it. But what makes you think the 20 coming in this year will be better than the 20 leaving?
Yes that has been the case since Mario has been here, obviously, we're 6-0. But that doesn't mean that will be the case next year. It gets harder and harder every year to make sure the 20 coming in are better than the 20 that leave, because we're a better team now than we were when Mario got here. If we want to keep that momentum up, we've got to take recruiting to another level.
People only want to look at the holes in the current team's roster and not plan ahead for the holes that are going to be created when players leave. The problems with our secondary and interior DL could have been seen a mile away, in fact many of us were calling it out in the offseason. We were saying we needed Harmon, a top-level CB, and a top-level safety. We were losing two NFL safeties. But somehow people thought it would be addition by subtraction.
QB, WR, LT, DB and DT will be issues next year. Those are the most expensive positions in football. We can NOT role with Emory, no matter how much people like him, if we want to keep up the momentum.
But if anyone can get us right, it's Mario. He's about as good as they come with talent acquisition. But good doesn't mean perfect and right now there's a lot of room for improvement.
