One phone call nearly paired up Cam Ward and Jeremiah Smith

And I'm just one phone call away from pairing up with Katherine Langford.

I've got your stone cold lock pickup line if you ever meet her:

Did you read the article?

Ward called Smith during the madness of that nine-hour period. They talked for 10 minutes. Smith says Ward told him, "If you choose to go to Miami, I'm going to go there." We asked Smith if he would have gone to Miami had Ward already been committed there -- and not undecided.

"It depends, it depends," he said. "It would have been a tough decision. … That would have definitely been something special, for sure."

So it's even more proof of him trying to pull the wool over our eyes and having no intent to go to UM. The longstanding narrative was that Smith didn't pick UM because we didn't have a QB. Smith knew Ward would the UM QB if Smith committed to UM, and he still said no.

This was our biggest recruiting miss in my lifetime. Bigger than Dalvin Cook or Patrick Peterson. The annoying part is many of us were saying so at the time. It's like the NIL people see a 5 star next to his name, a 5 star next to JoJo Trader and Ny Carr's names, and think "oh it's the same thing" or "oh we'll just get a WR1 next cycle."

We were saying Smith was a generational Andre Johnson talent the entire cycle. But they dropped the ball. They can't make up for it this cycle. There's no Jeremiah Smith this cycle. Or probably for the next decade. It's a recruiting miss you don't recover from.

As good as Mario has been at recruting, this one was a massive fail. We should never have let this kid leave South Florida.

Eh. I'm not putting the blame on Mario on this one.

I would put the blame on how the football program has performed over the last 15 years.

How many WRs from Miami have gone in the 1st round in Jeremiah's lifetime? Compared to OSU?

He made a business decision, just like Dalvin Cook, Amari Cooper, etc...

And how does that help Miami? Landing Jeremiah Smith helps Miami. Making excuses doesn't IMO. They need to find a way to recruit difference makers. Like I look at our 2025 class right now and I see a lot of good players, but where are the Jeremiah Smith level difference makers? We don't have a single 5 star committed from what I can see.

We're a playoff team now which means our comp is the Alabama, Georgia, Ohio States of the world. We need to start recruiting like those teams recruit and not load up with a bunch of 4 stars hanging out around the 5-10 range every year.

When are we going to start seeing top 3 classes?

Dalvin Cook was our biggest whiff, as he single handedly beat us 3 straight times

Getting guys like Cam Ward, and having guys like X have back to back 1000 yard seasons is a good start.

Definetly need to be getting 3-5 5 star kids minimum every year

To be fair, Mario is the best recruiter we’ve had in 20 years. He lives and breaths recruiting, he wants the #1 classes. I believe we will get there.

These next 2 months is going to be vital for this program by closing strong on some whales. We have have to win out as well

no, we're not. how about waiting until we show we can hang with the big dogs for even one single season before doing this?

Cam Ward is leaving after this year. He's the best QB in college football so no matter who comes after him it will be a step back at that position. So we need to make up for it by overcompensating elsewhere.

Also, given what Ward has accomplished this season, it's going to be a lot harder to pull that off again. It will be a lot more expensive to pull off a move like that in future years because a lot more teams are going to be competing with us for that stud portal QB and driving up the NIL price.

Hope so. Mario is an elite recruiter I agree. If he can't do it nobody can. But then he needs to do it, and our NIL needs to step up as well.
