On Bryce Fitzgerald...

You raise a relevant point about Malachi Nelson.

But we also have posters who told us that we should not have recruited/offered Cedrick Bailey, that he did not have enough stars, would never play, and was only being recruited to try to get Jeremiah Smith.

I have no problems with people getting things wrong sometimes. I still believe there are posters who are never happy with anything (short of signing Jeremiah Smith), so if the Mope Squad is occasionally correct on a recruit "not being that great", then it seems to be more a product of statistics and probability, rather than any keen insights into talent identification.

I trust our coaches. They will not always be right. But they have to live with their choices, rather than just trying to build up a history of hot-takes on a website.
Not necessarily talking about this recruit - some of the people who raise concerns about players to me off the board, which conflict with staff takes at times, are people I’d consider to be some of our best contributors here. You would too btw. I know some of them told me that if we’re taking Judd, they’d prefer that we take Bailey.

Agree. Mario misses a lot, even not counting his mulligan class of 2022 which turned out to be a lot of misses. But Butch swung and missed a bunch, too. I haven't watched baseball in forever, but I'll use the analogy that a .300 hitter is good, a .400 hitter is epically good. you still miss 6 or 7 times out of 10. With football recruiting, if you hit 50% of the time, I think you're among the best. And Mario is in that category.

As far as Bryce's speed, D$ already talked about it in his recruiting podcast. Kid is a baller and was laser times in one of the camps. He's giong to be plenty fast. His "finesse" play rightly concerns people, when you're playing both ways, and getting 10 ints a season, maybe you're picking your battles a little in HS? That is 100% coachable.

Well if you remember with Nelson, some of us pointed out the kid is the goods when it comes to his upside. BUT he's very raw and he needs time to learn the game. That's why some of us were on board with getting him here as a long term option. Not someone for this year. Just like Moore.
I know but who should he sit behind? He got beat out by this guy- redshirt sophomore not freshman to correct my previous post.

I started a whole thread on that topic, LOL. I'm no insider and no QB expert. But when you look at how well Bailey was distributing that ball on nationally televised TV games, how confidently he managed that team, it was obvious Bailey had that "it" factor. At the time, Judd's stats were worse than Sitkowski's. He found a new team and QB's coach who turned him around. So he might turn into a talent over time. But when you have someone in your backyard like Bailey, I still argue he is the more worthy flyer to take.

Let’s not brush off the speed question so fast. Let’s see how he times at a recognized event.

I just don't see him as a nickel…Whether you are going big nickel or small nickel, the one thing that's a constant trait for good nickels is tenacity…and making plays in flat or in the box (T.Couch although not a superstar by any means, actually did these things well, for instance)

I think he's either FS or CB.
If you don’t love tackling I’m not sure how you play anything outside of corner. And I’d id expect him to be targeting on screens etc. Be interesting to see him add some weight

If everyone who sees the guy says he can run then he can run. The staff also doesn’t have concerns about his speed. The only people questioning his athleticism is this board lol

Nope. They questioned his speed on the gator board while they were in it for him and thought they had a chance. The opinions on him were mixed.

It is my understanding that there were some older times and some newer times, at least when it comes to assessing his speed.

Hopefully we get a repeat at an all-star event or something but at least that one was a laser.
No doubt. I’m glad that the latest report at least contains a good time like that. I’m just curious to see at an open event that’s all.

Yes. And my point about "older times" is that Gator fans tend to get a narrative stuck in their heads, and then can't seem to update to the latest version.

In past decades, when kids wouldn't sign until February, you wanted their latest height/weight/speed numbers. Now that everyone is trying to get an entire recruiting class wrapped up by August, you can't be beholden to Junior year numbers.

I’m guessing that the 11.50 was at a meet. The 4.48 wasn’t for certain. That’s the thing. Like I said, let’s see how he does at the next event that’s measurable.

Yea more fans who haven’t actually seen the kid and just googled a track time. People who have seen the kid in real life aren’t questioning it.

You said “the only people questioning his athleticism is this board lol”.

I said it’s not only this board and named the board where they questioned his speed.

Like I said, let’s see how he times at the next big event… like a 247 or Under Armour type event.

@grover or @TheOriginalCane i need one more.

Didn't we have a thread on this a few months back? ... nm, just found it.

Sorry, brother, you're going to have to choose on your own. Relly and I disagree over his "no excuses" mantra. But he and WBB don't hijack threads, so it's different. They don't belong in a Mope boy band.
