He had to contend with Lou Holtz at SC, Spurrier at UF and SC, and Philip Fulmer at Tennessee. That was just on their side of the SEC alone! He had to battle just to get out of the division! They were always bound to lose at least one. That 2002 UGA team was just as good as Miami and Ohio State, but remember, UGA and the SEC wasn’t respected like that back then. Auburn was shut out in 2004 as an undefeated team. Mark Richt was looked at as the religious coach that everyone loved, but didn’t respect. The hot takes were Stoops and Carroll at that time.I have the utmost respect for Coach Richt but he just couldn’t get UGA over the hump, for reasons that have been discussed ad nauseum. It took Kirby Smart and bags of $$$ to get their first NC since 1980.
I’ve been watching Miami football since 1967 and the reality is we are currently what we were pre 1983 - a middle of the road football program with a few 9-10 wins seasons and a few great players. We had an unprecedented 19 year run from 1983 to 2002 by catching the CFB world by surprise. The landscape of CFB has changed dramatically since then and we won’t catch it by surprise again any time soon.
The current expectations are fueled by a fanbase living in the glory of the distant past. No matter who the HC may be, the Miami football program fights an uphill battle in that it’s a small private university located about as far south as one can get in the US. Couple that with a limited donor base compared to the large state schools, and it’s a David vs Goliath situation.
A friend of mine made a great comp as to what we might expect in the coming years - the Mark Richt era at UGA (@Memnon). An occasional 10-11 win season with an occasional championship game appearance (whatever conference that may be) and maybe even stumble into a CFP appearance. At this point, that comparison may be a bit too optimistic.
For some time, my expectations have been to just not get embarrassed or look embarrassing. Obviously, even my lowly expectations haven’t been met. I’ll continue to root for my Canes because it’s now just embedded in my DNA with the continued hope that we can at least field a team that is competitive.
Lester, 'The Molester' Williams.Agree with you-I started following them back in 76-Thry always had a few good players especially DL but, could never get over that hump.
Actually Lou Saban started the turn around when he recruited Carol City DT Lester Williams who was the number one recruit in the nation back then .
It takes a great coach who has vision -Which Howard,Jimmy,Dennis and Butch all had those qualities, plus they had good staffs-
We haven’t had that in 20+ years.
Replace Shannon with butch in 2007 I wonder what happens, I think a certain university president was lazy and the BoT was vindictive over that December 2000 extension negotiation and went the easy route. And I think in 2002 Coker was a top 5 salaried coach back then at 3.2M/year.((((Long Reply))))
TLDR: Miami can’t get out of Miami’s way, period.
Let me preface this by saying u’re one of the best, most logical posters on this board. I had no idea ur fandom carried u all the way to the 60’s, before the mantra of “The U” & during the era of “SunTan U.” I’m a geek for history (no one would or could ever tell this by how I look & conduct myself, lol), & u’re right; us younger fans aren’t too familiar w/ pre 1983.
Those were a lot, & I mean a lot of subpar yrs as an Independent. Sure we had guys like Jim Kelly, Otis Anderson, Ted Hendricks, Chuck Foreman, Glenn Dennison, Fred Marion, John Swain on these teams pre 1983 (although a couple did bleed over to 1983), they were so far few in between & scarce on these teams. ****, it wasn’t until Schnelly came over, & we started to see his vision when we won the Peach Bowl I believe in 1980 (iirc upon research).
With that said, bro; u know how bad those 60’s - late 70’s teams were! We’ll never get back to that level of depravity, no matter how much it feels hopeless. Lol Also, we should be so lucky to be in a Richt era of UGA. Richt from 2000-2015 went:
•145-51 (.740 win%)
•2 Conference Titles
•6 SECCG appearances
•9-5 in bowl games (2 NY6 wins)
•91 players drafted
That would be by far the best results of any coach we’ve had here since our last Nat’l Title. I would argue that if the CFP was around when Richt was coaching, UGA would’ve made the CFP as a Final 4 team 3x & as a Final 12 team 7x. We would be so lucky to have that type of results the past two decades.
The problem w/ Miami is simple: It’s Miami. Somewhere along the lines Miami stopped hiring the best & started hiring guys w/ “Miami ties” sans Golden (which is another story I’ll get to). Miami became complacent; it has nothing to do w/ a small donor base, being a small private school, or all the other rhetorics I’ve heard to justify what we’ve witnessed. It has everything to do w the complacency of the admin from academics to athletics. The school has been resting on its laurels, not keeping up w/ trends. The school has made head scratching hires after head scratching hires, as long as they have “Miami Ties.”
Let’s revisit:
I’ve said this before, but I had no problem w/ The Coker hire. It made sense at the time; why not hire the OC that helped change the culture after Butch left? So initially, it looked good; but, once the signs showed we were a mess, what did the admin do? They hired from w/in again! Why? B/c he was a Miami guy, cheap, & at least his defense was A-1.
To recap, from Butch, to Clappy, to Radio we hired 3 guys in a row w/ zero HC experience. The 1st made sense b/c he won here as a DC, won a SB at the NFL level as a DC. The 2nd made sense b/c he was apart of the culture change & was the OC of one of the more prolific offenses in the 2000-01 season; however, the 3rd? What’s the saying: going to well one, too, many times? Shannon made zero sense for a bevy of reasons.
OK, that failed, plus we had sanctions, so what did the admin do? They hire a guy that had no Miami ties, BUT who was a sub .500 HC at the G5 level!!! Why? B/c he had a charming look, was cheap, was articulate, & had pillars. Lmao. We know how that turned out.
The best hire came next, which really wasn’t the best truthfully, but it was Richt. The admin threw a whole bag at Richt to get him to not retire and coach. Mind u Richt, as an alum, wanted no parts of Miami when he was in his prime. So what changed? Was it b/c it was the most $$ he had ever earned as a HC? No, it was b/c we did something UGA refused to do, the contingency to live out his life long dream to coach w/ his son. Oh, did I establish his son had zero experience & he was supposed to coach the most important position on the field, the QB?
Even w/ that, Richt gave us the best 1.7 yr stretch we’ve had since 2003-2004…HOWEVER, the team became in disarray, & from the latter part of the 2017 season - 2018 season an absolute utter mess. Well, Richt being a standup guy walked away, letting the school keep the rest of his salary. What did the admin do? They paid $9m to secure an inexperienced HC from a G5 school whose father happened to be friends w/ several BOT members, & was part of the problem on staff. What could go wrong?
Then the dreadful 2021 season, so bad that even ESPN pundits chimed in creating an absolute feeding frenzy. The good news is it got the admin off its ***, the bad news is they didn’t learn their lesson.
Somewhere in Eugene, Or was a HC that found some success, but had some ?able coaching decisions leading his teams to underachieve based upon talent + schedule. In 2021, this coach had the #3 team in the nation, w/ a clear path to the CFP after stymying a then #3 team, OSU, on the road. 54-69 was his opponent’s combined record to end the season, absolute easy street to the CFP.
But then, that #3 team lost a road game, a road game to a 3-9 team. Ooof, not a good look. No worries though, he gets a 2nd chance as his team once again get to #3 in the rankings due to happenstance. Now all he has to do is beat the #23 team on the road, a team full of NR-3* guys, & wouldn’t u know, that #3 team got bludgeoned. OK, maybe there was a back channel to sneak in as a conference champion. A revenge game is set up, this time on a neutral field. Once again, his team are the heavy favorites to avenge that loss, & boom, another blow out.
Now to most admins, that would be a red flag; u would want to investigate, do due diligence, just to make sure this is the right guy for the job. Nope, not The University of Miami. U see that guy is an alum, a 2x Nat’l champion here at The U. So after they fired their previous mistake, the admin completely zero’d in on their guy, w/o remotely seeing who was the best candidate.
Oh, did I forget to mention that there was no AD in place at this time either? So guys w/ no sports background took it upon themselves to hire someone simply b/c he was an alum w/ moderate success at a P5 school. THEN, they hired the AD, THEN they hired a Football Ops guy who came over not only as an alum, but as a NFL front office vet. They then told these 3 to have a coffee & figure it out, & we know what happened thereafter. Lol
Miami is not broke, we’ve been the poster child of NIL
Miami is not behind times, we were the 1st to build from the transfer portal.
The problem w/ Miami is Miami. There’s nothing unique about it no matter how often we wanna to tell ourselves about this. Miami has had more advantages than the rest of the ACC sans FSU & then Clemson circa 2010 since joining. So. Fla is still a top 3 natural area to recruit from. The problem is this admin is myopic with their decisions. We don’t have fwd thinkers running this program, & that’s the issue. It’s even leaked into some in this fan base as they can’t see past certain things.
Until that changes, until we get fwd thinkers and are completely aligned from the top down, then we’ll continue to be disjointed.
