Now That the Dust has Settled……..

I’ve been watching Miami football since 1967 and the reality is we are currently what we were pre 1983 - a middle of the road football program with a few 9-10 wins seasons and a few great players. We had an unprecedented 19 year run from 1983 to 2002 by catching the CFB world by surprise. The landscape of CFB has changed dramatically since then and we won’t catch it by surprise again any time soon.

The current expectations are fueled by a fanbase living in the glory of the distant past. No matter who the HC may be, the Miami football program fights an uphill battle in that it’s a small private university located about as far south as one can get in the US. Couple that with a limited donor base compared to the large state schools, and it’s a David vs Goliath situation.

A friend of mine made a great comp as to what we might expect in the coming years - the Mark Richt era at UGA (@Memnon). An occasional 10-11 win season with an occasional championship game appearance (whatever conference that may be) and maybe even stumble into a CFP appearance. At this point, that comparison may be a bit too optimistic.

For some time, my expectations have been to just not get embarrassed or look embarrassing. Obviously, even my lowly expectations haven’t been met. I’ll continue to root for my Canes because it’s now just embedded in my DNA with the continued hope that we can at least field a team that is competitive.

Yes your comparison is optimistic.

Richt is 10x the coach that Cristobal is. Richt teams rarely looked unprepared. He lost his fastball when it came to recruiting and player evals but I still had confidence that he could put together a game plan that exploits an opponents weakness. And if something was working, he would stick with it until they stopped it. I seriously doubt he would call for two straight passes with a backup QB on 2nd and goal with 3 yards to go if the RBs have averaged 6 yards per carry. And if they didn’t get the TD, he is smart enough that kicking the FG likely results in a 1 pt loss. He didn’t need an analytics stat sheet to tell him what to do - Richt actually had a feel for the game.

Pre 83 wasn’t that good.
Seriously, y’all think Emory is bad, try having Ed Carney at QB, sometimes we were hoping Art Carney came out to play. No shade on Eddie, great guy, still Lov ya, but limited skill set. We had a few really good players, Chuck Foreman and Burgess Owens were two. After that the talent drop off was exceptional. Just sayin’. But they were Canes and we were Canes, and we supported them and loved them. Some people here need a lesson in loyalty, and Google” Fair Weather Fan”, just sayin’

We had no Black players until 1968 (when Ray Bellamy became eligible as a Soph). The reason given by the UM Administration was we always wanted SEC teams to play us, and they were all segregated.

So, we had no problem inviting northern teams with Black players to the OB, but we fielded an all-White team. The Band of the Hour would routinely play "Dixie."

Yeah, nobody was debating whether or not Miami was a Southern city in the 1960's

You'll probably recall John Hornibrook and Kary Baker, two more 1970s era QBs who just couldn't get it done.

We couldn't catch a break in the 70s. We wasted HoF level guys like Foreman and Owens (who you mention), OJ Anderson, Dennis Harrah, Don Latimer, Eddie Edwards, Fred Marion and a bunch of the best players to ever suit up for the Canes. Just not enough of them and weak Head Coaches.

Indeed, brother. But the Happy Hour at the Rat, beer and Weed was exceptional. Good Times

I missed out. There was no Rat back in the 60s. Just the brand new Student Union and pool. Weed was an exotic drug when I was there. Beer wasn't.
I bend the knee to you my Liege.#CANESNATIONLIFER

Which begs the question can Miami continue to fill those bags?
And will the donors that had illusions of grandeur thinking Mario was the guy that was needed to restore those days continue to throw money at the program now seeing that it doesn’t look like he is anywhere near the answer.

These guys didn’t get to the position they are in life monetarily by throwing good money after bad so will they keep throwing money at the program have to be knowing inside that they may be wasting it with Mario at the helm.

Friends of Mario or not.Columbus Mafia or not at some point they are going to expect something more than just winning 10 games. They are going to want championships at least the ACC title.

Going to be interesting going forward as to how this plays out.

Appreciate the post.

This was part of the difficulty I had watching this season. It was a battle between wanting and even expecting to be “back” (meaning measuring against the championship standard we’ve experienced and hope to regain), which caused frustration by uneven play and close wins against supposedly inferior teams…

…and enjoying what was clearly a unicorn for us these days (meaning a 10-win season with an elite offense and QB plus conference championship and playoff appearances very much in our grasp late in the season with every reason to expect to reach those goals).

I had to keep reminding myself to enjoy it. We saw some really cool things this year. And the reality is this season was the exception, not the rule, which stings because it wasn’t even that good in the end.

In other words, this was an awesome season compared to who we’ve been for the past 20 years (ie who we are now), but it’s ultimately disappointing because I enjoy both the gift and curse of knowing what we achieved in the past (ie who we used to be).

Now we spend all offseason again wondering what we could be, and hoping it’ll be what we once were.

Agree with you-I started following them back in 76-Thry always had a few good players especially DL but, could never get over that hump.
Actually Lou Saban started the turn around when he recruited Carol City DT Lester Williams who was the number one recruit in the nation back then .

It takes a great coach who has vision -Which Howard,Jimmy,Dennis and Butch all had those qualities, plus they had good staffs-

We haven’t had that in 20+ years.

I have the utmost respect for Coach Richt but he just couldn’t get UGA over the hump, for reasons that have been discussed ad nauseum. It took Kirby Smart and bags of $$$ to get their first NC since 1980.
The bags of $$$ was the difference. Kirby is pretty overrated IMO, but has just been able to bully most teams with better athletes for a few years while lucking out that Stetson Bennett actually turned out solid.

Guys, we might have something.. Let's turn the PoP Tarded Bowl into the biggest *** Bowl

Worse in the last 50, with a 21-15 record vs the 22-16 record of Mario…as a first time head coach with much less resources…

YIKES
Manny left Mario the worst roster in UM history.

Not to mention Manny had a class ranked in the 60s when fired and Lashlee was already gone. How many games does Manny win in 2022? 5ish

Mario going 10-3 and losing when it matters is exactly what most Duck fans warned us about.. What we will get most years, but to compare that to W/L with Manny isn’t it. The floor is raised.

Distressing and depressing.

No apologies necessary brother. The media absolutely fuels the fire. It seems they have an obsession with Miami being great again and I’m not really sure why other than the short historical significance of our past.

Programs with not much past success, particular with NC’s, are typically thrilled with a season like Iowa State had. Their expectations are realistic and any success, even short lived, is viewed as a bonus. If we hadn’t had those 5 NC’s, the expectations of our fans would probably be similar.
The media's obsession is fueled by money and greed, nothing more, nothing less. Miami sells when we are at or near the top. Good thoughts BTW

We will never be back.. You can't tear down Pork N Beans Stadium and think we'll bounce back
When talk began about destroying The OB (RIP OB) the program began to deteriorate. City of LA saved The Coliseum, City of Miami chose to destroy The OB. We are cursed.

1 win difference is 🤮. The floor may be raised, but did we also lower the ceiling?

The mindset that Mario is the only HC is a mindset we need to break. He may in fact be an answer, but it is ridiculous to think he’s the only answer.

If we allow ourselves and the University to have that mindset, we are certainly destined for failure and mediocrity.
