I’ve been watching Miami football since 1967 and the reality is we are currently what we were pre 1983 - a middle of the road football program with a few 9-10 wins seasons and a few great players. We had an unprecedented 19 year run from 1983 to 2002 by catching the CFB world by surprise. The landscape of CFB has changed dramatically since then and we won’t catch it by surprise again any time soon.

The current expectations are fueled by a fanbase living in the glory of the distant past. No matter who the HC may be, the Miami football program fights an uphill battle in that it’s a small private university located about as far south as one can get in the US. Couple that with a limited donor base compared to the large state schools, and it’s a David vs Goliath situation.

A friend of mine made a great comp as to what we might expect in the coming years - the Mark Richt era at UGA (@Memnon). An occasional 10-11 win season with an occasional championship game appearance (whatever conference that may be) and maybe even stumble into a CFP appearance. At this point, that comparison may be a bit too optimistic.

For some time, my expectations have been to just not get embarrassed or look embarrassing. Obviously, even my lowly expectations haven’t been met. I’ll continue to root for my Canes because it’s now just embedded in my DNA with the continued hope that we can at least field a team that is competitive.

Give me a Mark Richt era any day. Imagine convincing the Donors to take the program to the next level when you are firing a Mark Richt versus a Manny Diaz. UGA has done pretty well since taking that next step.
I have the utmost respect for Coach Richt but he just couldn’t get UGA over the hump, for reasons that have been discussed ad nauseum. It took Kirby Smart and bags of $$$ to get their first NC since 1980.

The difference is Richt at UGA was in the SEC. Richt with his teams would’ve won the ACC 75% of the time.

If we’re being completely honest, Richt at Mario’s age is still unbeaten with this roster and we’re playing in the elite 8.
Would’ve been interesting to see what CMR could’ve done but remember who his DC was while he was with us.

It is gonna take us bags of money too. That is just the way the game is today. Free agency looks worse in CFB than it does in the NFL too.

Interesting point of view brother. I became familiar with the program a few years later than you, eventually attended the U and proud to share the sentiments you express at the end.

Question: How much of the yearly expectation, and eventually frustration is fueled by the national media? I mean, I don’t think we have been that good for the last two-plus decades, but every preseason, the sensation gods at espn rank us unrealistically high. I don’t think they genuinely give us a favorable ranking every year, I think there is a latent hatred for our program, but they love drama/ratings and God knows how good we are at the supply side of it, so they build us up only to happily see us fail miserably. Point is, “Oh they love us!” and “Oh Herbie loves the U!” exists only in our gullible, relevancy-thirsty minds.

I wonder (unrealistically) how much our yearly happiness with the program would be if we were reputedly Iowa State, a program that has never achieved anything significant until now? They have had their staunch fans happy, year in, year out. Or SMU, left for dead and not sniffed for decades until now, but have had their loyal fans (I don’t know this personally, but imagine it as a U fan) throughout?

Sorry for the rambling structure, but I’m hungover from the 💩 show I witnessed yesterday.

No apologies necessary brother. The media absolutely fuels the fire. It seems they have an obsession with Miami being great again and I’m not really sure why other than the short historical significance of our past.

Programs with not much past success, particular with NC’s, are typically thrilled with a season like Iowa State had. Their expectations are realistic and any success, even short lived, is viewed as a bonus. If we hadn’t had those 5 NC’s, the expectations of our fans would probably be similar.

Miami overcame David vs Goliath by thinking outside the box, being smarter and maximizing what we had available to us … not by keeping ourself in a box and making things harder at every turn

Invest wisely, do more with less, win

(There are coaches in the country who do more with less. Neither in baseball nor football are they in Coral Gables.)

This is such a garbage take and a cop out. On average, the amount you win should be directly compatible with how much money you spend. If that’s not being done (currently it’s not even close), a new staff should be brought in. Period.

So what is the ratio of salary to wins, I'm curious to see where you get your information from...

Facing reality is a cop out? The reality is the Miami football program has only been relevant in 19 of the 98 years it’s been in existence. Basing expectations on distant success is unrealistic at best.

As far as the money being spent, it wasn’t until Herbie embarrassed us on national TV that the university decided to invest more in the football program and was apparently only willing to make that investment with Mario as the HC 3 years ago.
