no team is safe these days....

NIL is a problem. Transfer portal is THE problem. You have to introduce multi year contracts. This still allows players to get paid but stops the madness every cycle. Take out the ability to transfer on a whim and the entire thing changes.

I’ve said for a while now this will eventually lead to a players union and collective bargaining.

What about putting the single portal window after spring practice? Transfers can only matriculate in summer sessions. I don't know if it's feasible, but if transfers only have pre-season practice to acclimate to their new team, they may be less likely to jump ship. Keep the exception for the grad transfers as is though.

Here's the thing, I think the February-March practices are garbage.

The NFL gives time off after the season. Yes, that facilitates free agency and the draft, but it is also a time for players to heal.

For "spring practice" (Feb-March) you need multiple practices in shells and shorts before there is ever full contact in pads. So you already are not getting a full-go for a portion of the time. A lot of guys have not healed from the season, and now with the earlier portal window, you lose a lot of returning guys. And, sure, it might be fun to see the freshmen running around, but they've barely had a chance to get registered, let alone learn the playbook.

Start practice in late May/early June. Take a short break in July. Do NOT have an August mandatory "in shells" period, just pick up on August 1 where you left off on June 30.

Use the spring (for everyone, both returning players and freshmen) to learn the playbook, lift weights, etc. Maybe you allow for no-pads walk-throughs to get the timing and blocking of the playbook down.

Is this about SMU? Didn't Lashlee say something about kids from their roster being targeted by other teams?
I doubt it's Lashlee but he did give a pre playoff interview and talked about the time frame of the transfer portal. He said that it's made it very difficult for coaches in the playoffs and bowl games to concentrate on that. Instead, they are having to play defense with guys on their team because so many other teams are tampering. Others have alluded to it, too.

Eventually - playoff teams may pay other possible team standouts - to NOT play.

Money talks.
Some think this is funny - but it's a certain possibility, and it's likely it has already been happening.

I could see why players opt out of bowl games....but to opt out of a bowl game that's in the CFP is wild.

Players have agreements for the regular season - the playoff games are "extra."

This will be the stated reason for squeezing out more money from schools.

For those who are going pro - their agents will be suggesting it's too great a risk for injury to play in the playoffs without additional compensation.

And it's also the agents through whom other competing teams enthusiastic donors may approach the agents - not the players directly - to either squeeze out additional playoff bonuses - or to whiz on the fire, call in the dogs, and call the hunt over.

Too much money in college football today for someone to leave any money just sitting on the table. And agents are not exactly poster children for exemplary ethics.

The agents can actually be approached and in turn receive direct payments to them alone - just to advise their player to not take such a risk - and then list a string of negatives to playing in games after the regular season.

Money money money.

It's just a matter of how far universities must spread their cheeks and lubing up to adapt to this soon-to-be financial quandary.

Couple of thoughts...
1. You need to let the players be able to transfer in for spring ball and class so then need to have the window open now.

2. As someone mentioned earlier, season should start a week earlier (week 0) and they should have the buy week we had last week. So the CFP games will be pushed up to help with transfering off teams in playoffs.

3. Regarding transfers, I think they should be allowed only 1 transfer per player unless they are a graduate then 2 transfers. Wouldnt be oppsosed to cant transfer until after sophomore year, make them stay 2 years at place they signed
