Nigel Bethel, Jr. to visit Miami January 26th weekend

If he can actually help with kickoff/punt returns, I would take him regardless of if TC/PS2 join Storm18. Our kickoff return was atrocious and it got to the point where Thomas getting to the 30 was a big return. Our punt return was solid with Berrios but he didn't have game breaking ability. I almost wish we would have offered Johnny Ford just for his return ability but if Bethel can provide some juice for special teams, sign me up.

It would be nice to see a player other than our starting RB making big hits on kick-offs.

I am in the group that sees a kid who is 6'0 180 and running a legit 4.3 AND has the hips to play DB AND is from MNW and saying we at least need to have a conversation with him in case all **** breaks loose and we strike out with TC and PS2. Kids with those measurables arent walking around everyday.

Didn't as much this year, I moved, I don't live in Fla anymore. But from what I've seen before & what my family who are still in Mia tell me I trust cause they're close to it.

I don't get the hate for this kid though, if this was a Folden eval I would be totally against it, but this staff deserves the benefit of the doubt imo. They've shown they can maximize prospects like Bethel & he would be a long term plan, not someone they would expect to come in & log snaps day 1 as a CB. But on ST's he can make an early impact, that 4.3-4.4 speed is for real.

The "hate" probably stems from his offer list of FIU/Akron/Tulane and that ilk and that he didn't play CB in HS and didn't make many plays on the football field. I don't hate him; I just don't think we build a champion striking out on 5 star CBs and replacing them with Akron players.

He's not a replacement for either of the AH kids, but that doesn't mean he can't play at Miami.

And UCF is actually recruiting him at the moment, he's not a Akron player, but I get your point.

Look, I think the kid can be a good player it's not a matter of life & death, if you don't that's cool too I respect your opinion.

We'll find out if the staff really wants him or not, if he ends up signing with Miami then we'll see what he becomes as a player.

i think stars are mostly bull****. but if a coaching staff has made it's own evaluation that a player is a total stud, like Surtain and/or Campbell, and they replace the loss with a player they have evaluated to be of less caliber, that's not a positive, it's a negative. bottom line: don't **** on my leg and tell me it's raining.

could bethel turn out to be a championship caliber CB? sure. it's possible. absolutely. too many variables and unknowns to say for certain who is going to be a stud. but based on how the staff has shown their cards in evaluating him and his competitive set, they think it to be less likely.

Too much talk about a recruit that is clearly the Plan C option. (meaning we miss on TC and PS2) Which could happen. If he is okay with that and the coaches are too, then why argue it. If we land one of the two (or both) AH kids then all this is a moot point.

That said, our KR/PR guys are so bad that if he could help us in that area Day 1 I would give him a scholie for that ability alone. Its embarassing how bad we are at KO returns. Especially for a school like UM. Someone brought up Javier Arenas and I will double down with Brandon James who saved UFs a$$ many times during their title days with Urban.

He doesn't get the concept. Folks see this kid and think average player. That's not how it works. 1 of 2 things will happen here....

1) He can't learn the cb position for whatever reason and washes out in 2 years. We took a risk and it was a miss.

2) He learns the CB position for 1-2 years and then becomes a prototype NFL type CB with size and speed to burn. Think Sam Shields that started in the Super Bowl. He washed out at WR, but then used his speed to become a boss CB. Bethel has the tools to be great.

Bethel is not a reach. He has NFL potential. It is more accurate to say he is a risk.

Hard to call a 3 star kid from a feeder school a reach. We took Redwine at the end of the cycle and he's turned into a decent player at the very least. Derrick Smith was a late offer last year and he looks promising as well. Not saying we should offer the kid, but probably lazy to just call him a reach.

Huge huge huge difference between Bethel and Redwine.

Redwine is SLOW. He is a low ceiling player. He is physically limited. Knowles is the same. He is small and slow. Malik Young is small and quick, but doesn't have great speed. Higher ceiling kid, but still not a prototype cb. Jackson has great size, but not sure about that top end speed.

Bethel has all the tools to be a prototype NFL CB. There aren't many CB recruits that are 6-1 and run a 10.6 100m. He has a similar ceiling as Surtain and Campbell. Unlike them, he hasn't had the benefit of great HS level coaching and time to develop his craft. The kid needs to be coached up, and he may never get there. If he does he can be a star.

This is what folks don't seem to grasp. It's lazy to look at 3* kid with not a lot of offers and assume he is not good and a reach. OK, well why is he only a 3*, and why does he have average teams only as offer. The answer is he plays WR and not CB for Northwest because they had 2 other Division 1 CB's. He was the deep threat WR for them. These other squads didn't see him in camp play CB. This is where Miami has a huge advantage. Our coaches can see these Miami athletes like this firsthand, and see the potential. We might not be able to beat Saban and Smart right now for these 5* kids (still hope we can). However, we sure can beat them at finding kids like this. This kid has the potential to lock up any WR in CFB with his size and speed.

This kid has the potential to lock up any WR in CFB with his size and speed.

We didn't find Bethel. Most every school that recruits MNW has probably met him in person, seen his film, etc. 247 has him listed at 5'11 160.. Is the 6'1 claim accurate? Him sitting behind 2 stars at CB is no different that Blades at STA. If he was that good, he would hold more committable offers right now. He is a Plan C kid for the big 3 & other top tier programs. I'm not saying it's a bad take. He seems like the kid that Babers takes at Syracuse and does well or Louisville plugs in and shines. Point is we have to do better on landing the sure things (TC) instead of crossing our fingers on last minute flyers.

Have some of you even watched his tape?

Between his junior tape and his overall highlight tape (looks like combines junior and senior years) on hudl...There are about 7-8 plays of him on defense. Most of them appear to be junior year, but it looks like he was used at corner on occasion senior year as well. 1 is an interception, another really nice form tackle. 1-2 others nice coverage in the end zone. It's not like he never played the position before, but also 1 where he plays off and then gets dragged by a receiver. He is definitely raw, but definitely fast and rangy.

No program other than Bama, maybe Ohio St and Clemson, and Ga (this season only so far, see if it continues) never has to go to backup plans or loses January battles. Everyone has to go to backup plans at some point. Evaluate and have your plans in place, and IF POSSIBLE, throw a bone to your pipelines...As I said before Golden would have 6-8 projects or reaches in his class. Richt seems to take only 1-2 and if anything, he is doing what some of you cry for (not reaching and saving for next year), it's apparent he doesn't reach much, so they must really like Bethel. This kid has upside and they loved him last early summer when Pete raved about him and reported the offer. They see the need at corner and overall team speed, and imo realize how raw he is. Not a bad late take at all. This is what recruiting is if you aren't alabama, and you just had your 1st 10 win season in a long time...IT usually isn't a top 6-7 class which is what we have now. Bethel does not ruin that class, stop crying.

He isn't a last minute flyer. We offered last summer at Camp. So yes, we did find him. Also, there is virtually no film of him at CB to be had period. Nobody knows what he can really do unless you've seen him at camp play CB. Also he is not sitting behind 2 stars. Instead of one of the three not playing they had Bethel at WR as a deep threat. It's called using the kids you have to help you win. Play all 3 and not just 2. It makes no sense to have one of them on the bench. Our staff wants Bethel and not the other 2. He may have been the starting CB if Northwest wanted him to play the position full time. However, they would lose that deep threat speed at WR....

I'd rather land the 5* kids at CB too. You know what you are getting with them, there's very little risk. We haven't been getting those players at CB since we lost Patrick Peterson (Johnson). You can be like, wait till 2019. That's been said every single year. This is where we are. This is reality sir.

5* kids in South Fla will never be sure things. Ever. Its just how it is down here. We will always sweat them out. Sure there will be a Duke, Marcus Forston, Pope every few years but those are few and far between. As long as 5* kids are in SF we will have to fight for them until the bitter end.

That said he is a Plan C kid. Most schools already landed their Plan A or B. Where we probably phucked up is not jumping on Divaad Wilson and Nadab Joseph earlier. 2 kids who are Plan B types that we should have made more of a priority. I dont want to here how Wilson hurt someones feelings in our class either. Sit down as men and hash that **** out. Now we are staring down the barrel of UGA coming down here and stealing 3 top DBs in our own backyard. Smh.

Nobody is crying over taking Bethel.. They are crying over RumF not being able to land a kid he coached in HS (who is like a son to him) that plays at the position he coaches. Bethel is collateral damage.

There's nothing wrong with taking a flyer on 1 maybe 2 kids each class. He's 6 feet, 4.3 speed, long and from MNW. He's got the measurables, so he's worth trying to develop. As long as the class isn't filled with these type of guys I think it's worth a shot.
