My View on Carson Beck

I wanted to post my thoughts on us being able to land Carson Beck and also my expectations now with Beck at the helm.

I was initially going to write this post yesterday but waited to let the excitement fade a bit so I can be as objective as possible.
When Mario deserves criticism I don't hesitate to slam Mario with criticism but that isn't the case here. Mario deserves a ton of praise. He saw Emory during the 2nd half of the bowl game and addressed a clear issue with a resounding resolution. For that, Mario deserves some love. Now onto Beck:

Carson Beck comes over from UGA where he held a 22-3 record as the starter for Georgia. Those 3 losses occurred in the 2023 SEC championship against Bama, losing again to Bama during the regular season and a loss to Ole Miss as well this past season.

Beck comes off of a down year where he threw for 3,485yds, 28TDs and 12Ints while posting a Qbr of 80.8(8th highest in the country). He averaged 7.8yds per throw while being sacked on 18 times on 448 pass attempts

This comes after Beck's 23' season where he threw for 3,941yds, 24TDs and 6Ints. He averaged 9.5yds per throw while being sacked 11 times on 417 pass attempts. Also of note: Beck's supporting cast that year was Brock Browers(R1: 13th pick) and Ladd McConkey(R2: 34th pick) as the pass catchers. He also had a much better offensive line as Amarius Mims( R1: 18th pick) and Sedrick Van Prand (R5: 141st pick).

I view Beck as a QB that can push the ball to all 3 levels of the field. A strong enough arm to deliver a 15yd deep out from the opposite hash and deliver the ball on a 60Yd go route. Beck will challenge tight windows and can also change the pace of how he delivers the ball and throw with touch when needed.

Something that plagued Beck this year was turnovers and this can be directly attributed to poor offensive line play by Georgia but also poor decision making from Beck. This is highlighted during the game against Florida where Florida really dominated the LOS against Georgia and made things difficult for Beck. The drop-off in receiving talent further complicated the issue. Beck seems to thrive when he has a strong running game he can use to play off of with playaction and really push the ball vertically.

The floor with Beck, in my opinion is 8 wins. I know some of you may be surprised by that number but things I factored in: Georgia has a top 5 headcoach in Kirby Smart. Georgia also has a top 5 program in the nation right now. As things stand right now, I view Miami and UGA having equal offensive talent while Miamj holds an edge at OL, UGA holds an edge at TE and RB with WR being a push. Another thing, I'm not sure how much of a leader Carson Beck is; will he be able to will us to victory? I question it. Another thing to consider with Beck is how will he bounce back from injury? Also, our defense was putrid against any offense with a semblance of a pulse, how much improvement can we expect out of a defense that's going to playing an entirely new system?

The ceiling with Beck is 11 wins during the regular season, an ACCCG appearance and a 1st round CFP appearance/exit. This would require a lot to go right. Beck would have to return to his 2023 form. Mario continuing to kneel on the ball at the end of games. Adequate kicking from our new kicker. Improved special teams play. Our OL would have to continue their performance by following up on a very good 23' season and good 24' season. Our running game would need to step up. Lofoton takes the next step in his development. Bauman continuing his production from Tulane. CJ Daniel's returns to his Liberty form. JoJo, and NyCarr take a few steps forward in their overall development. One of RayRay, Malachi Toney, or Dylan Upshaw really stepping up to produce in the slot for us. Probably the most important factor is the defense showing vast improvement. Not to forget a relatively healthy year from the team. This is asking a lot from Miami's roster. I know some of you probably question why I have Miami as a 1st round CFP exit and that's because I question Beck's ability to will a team to victory. Football isn't a one player sport but QB is the most important, and impacful, position in the sport. We just had the best player/QB in all of the sport and still failed to reach the ACCCG and CFP so this is no slight against Beck I'm just stating what I think.

If I was a betting man, I think we land somewhere in the middle which would probably be 10 wins. As long as those 10 wins include UF, FSU, and ND I can live with it.

What do you guys think?

Go Canes!
I can live with it. Then again, this year our 10 wins included UF and FSU and half this fanbase can't.

These ridiculous predictions are exhausting. Can we just stop with the retardedness?

One thing that is not talked about enough is he's a two time national champion. If he comes back healthy, we're getting a championship caliber QB with his own personal reasons to do as best as he can to raise his draft stock.

I reminds me a lot of Brad Kaaya when he was good at Miami.. am i crazy? Same size and dynamic 2nd level throws

Beck isn't a runner, but he has decent mobility and can gets first downs with his legs. He's not a statue like Kaaya.

Speaking of which, I'd have loved to see Kaaya in Dawson's system, he'd kill in it.

The problem with 10 wins, including FSU, ND, and UF is that means we're probably going to lose 2 games we're favored in..again.. in the ACC. Could cost us an ACCCG AND a playoff berth... AGAIN... Exactly like this year...
That's still better than 95% of college football. We need to be comfortable living in that space for a few years and not freak out. It takes times for most coaches, but you have to win enough to justify the investment. 10 wins a year does that for a long time.

This. We've been headed in the right direction as a program. Painful at times but right direction. We need to win at a consistent rate. This helps expectations and standards to align.

Basically an above average to good college qb that will be as good as his support system is

Dawson has had solid to good to great offenses with 3 different qbs in the last 3-4 years so i trust him. Now we have to upgrade some of the talent on offense, thru the portal and development of the WRs/RBs/TEs/OL we already have

Me personally i think i a want top RB out of the portal just as much i want a top WR. Saw people say we could risk losing a RB but i don’t think we have anyone i would really sweat if we were getting a top guy to replace them. And even tho its different, we aren’t worried about losing a WR by going for a top portal wr so why worry about losing a rb?

But as far as beck he wont be anywhere close to cam, we most likely wont have the #1 offense in the country from literally week 1 to 12. Probably wont be a heisman finalist here, wont be considered the best qb in the country but he is one of the best options of all the qbs that entered the portal and good enough for us to compete for the acc and get in the top12(should have been this year lol)

Salute to mario/dawson for getting him, if he plays well this could end up completely killing the perception of mario & qbs if it’s not already dead.

I didn't watch Beck much while at UGA so i wanted to see how bad these turnovers were. A few things stood out to me.
- When Cam was at his best, his back foot planted after his drop and he let it rip. With Beck, many times there was a pause for a one or two count after his drop before he let it rip. Some could be his WRs and dog**** routes...but i think some is recognition and/or waiting to clear. He needs to see it faster and not allow DBs to watch his eyes and drive on it. Rep this time and time again in practice.
- When Beck throws picks, he tends to be high. Even near INTs were due to being high. That's his footwork. He throws while drifting or off his back foot a lot. I thought maybe it was just due to poor OL play, and while 2023 was a bit better, i still saw it and the resulting high throws. If i'm Dawson, the absolute first thing i do is work on his footwork.

He's never won a national title. Unless you're just talking about him being on the team and not starting?

Last year, Dawson had 1a and 1b targets of Ward and Howard. This year, Dawson had 1a and 1b targets of Mateer and Beck. Seems like our OC knows what he's doing with QB evals.

I really don't understand why some on CIS want to rip into this kid. Beck isn't Ward. But there aren't 5 QBs in college I'd rather have than him. Not one in the ACC. Klubnik comes closest, and he has as many (and similar) flaws as Beck. People were calling for Mendoza and Bailey. Beck is much better than both. People love DJ Lagway for some reason. I guarantee Beck will be the better QB in that game.

This is a reasonable take. I am more optimistic. If Beck is healthy and wants it - and we'll see if he does - the sky is the limit with this team.
The current favorite to win the natty is a team with 2 losses. I think with Beck, even if we have 2 losses next year, I believe we'll probably get in.

That's assuming we lose the ACC CH GM.

And, if Beck is healthy and he's motivated like it looks like he is, he WILL be in the Heisman conversation because he was already in that convo last year.

Hot Take: if we beat ND and we don't win in spite of him - ie. he performs well - he will automatically be elevated as a top 5 Heisman candidate. And, if he beats FLA, he will probably be the frontrunner.
