My View on Carson Beck

Agree that the floor is 8 wins because of the defense, as of right now. The ceiling is undefeated in the regular season but we still have more pieces needed to complete this puzzle.

Offense: Beck will put us in a position to win in nearly every game with our OL. We will get a WR1, so our offense will be as dominant as Beck's UGA 2023 offense.

Defense: We would have gone undefeated in the regular season if we even had a pulse on defense, and possibly won the NC if we just had a top quartile ACC defense. We scored 38 vs Cuse and lost, 41 vs Iowa State and still lost. The same will be the case in 2025. Get the right DC and staff in place, bring in a few more pieces (Lucas, another S/N, a top MLB, ideally another top DT), and we're steamrolling teams.
I grappled with my ceiling projection because Beck at UGA had top 5 defenses back to back years, a top HC, and ideal circumstances still couldn't get it done so I hesitate thinking he'd go undefeated here. I'd absolutely love to see us go undefeated during the regular season but I just don't see it.

Yall keep doing this Beck or nothing narrative. If Beck canā€™t get it done here it has nothing to do with him and more to do with the team as a whole. Riley Leonard is not that good, but he is good enough and the team around him is great. Thats what Beck is, but heā€™s def better than Riley Leonard. Cam couldnā€™t do it alone. This is a team sport. A healthy Beck will do his job just fine, itā€™s all the other pieces that will determine if this team is a contender or not. I expect the offense to look different but still be a top offense in the country. The defense canā€™t get worse, it will depend on personnel as well as the coaching AKA DC hire.

Would not have thought a month ago we would have landed a starting QB in the playoffs. Huge upgrade for the QB room. I do believe bobos offense could be holding him back some. Maybe the world hasn't seen the best version of Beck yet. Props to Mario for not backing off. The man seems to be on a mission to compete at the championship level. I'm here for it

I wanted to post my thoughts on us being able to land Carson Beck and also my expectations now with Beck at the helm.

I was initially going to write this post yesterday but waited to let the excitement fade a bit so I can be as objective as possible.
When Mario deserves criticism I don't hesitate to slam Mario with criticism but that isn't the case here. Mario deserves a ton of praise. He saw Emory during the 2nd half of the bowl game and addressed a clear issue with a resounding resolution. For that, Mario deserves some love. Now onto Beck:

Carson Beck comes over from UGA where he held a 22-3 record as the starter for Georgia. Those 3 losses occurred in the 2023 SEC championship against Bama, losing again to Bama during the regular season and a loss to Ole Miss as well this past season.

Beck comes off of a down year where he threw for 3,485yds, 28TDs and 12Ints while posting a Qbr of 80.8(8th highest in the country). He averaged 7.8yds per throw while being sacked on 18 times on 448 pass attempts

This comes after Beck's 23' season where he threw for 3,941yds, 24TDs and 6Ints. He averaged 9.5yds per throw while being sacked 11 times on 417 pass attempts. Also of note: Beck's supporting cast that year was Brock Browers(R1: 13th pick) and Ladd McConkey(R2: 34th pick) as the pass catchers. He also had a much better offensive line as Amarius Mims( R1: 18th pick) and Sedrick Van Prand (R5: 141st pick).

I view Beck as a QB that can push the ball to all 3 levels of the field. A strong enough arm to deliver a 15yd deep out from the opposite hash and deliver the ball on a 60Yd go route. Beck will challenge tight windows and can also change the pace of how he delivers the ball and throw with touch when needed.

Something that plagued Beck this year was turnovers and this can be directly attributed to poor offensive line play by Georgia but also poor decision making from Beck. This is highlighted during the game against Florida where Florida really dominated the LOS against Georgia and made things difficult for Beck. The drop-off in receiving talent further complicated the issue. Beck seems to thrive when he has a strong running game he can use to play off of with playaction and really push the ball vertically.

The floor with Beck, in my opinion is 8 wins. I know some of you may be surprised by that number but things I factored in: Georgia has a top 5 headcoach in Kirby Smart. Georgia also has a top 5 program in the nation right now. As things stand right now, I view Miami and UGA having equal offensive talent while Miamj holds an edge at OL, UGA holds an edge at TE and RB with WR being a push. Another thing, I'm not sure how much of a leader Carson Beck is; will he be able to will us to victory? I question it. Another thing to consider with Beck is how will he bounce back from injury? Also, our defense was putrid against any offense with a semblance of a pulse, how much improvement can we expect out of a defense that's going to playing an entirely new system?

The ceiling with Beck is 11 wins during the regular season, an ACCCG appearance and a 1st round CFP appearance/exit. This would require a lot to go right. Beck would have to return to his 2023 form. Mario continuing to kneel on the ball at the end of games. Adequate kicking from our new kicker. Improved special teams play. Our OL would have to continue their performance by following up on a very good 23' season and good 24' season. Our running game would need to step up. Lofoton takes the next step in his development. Bauman continuing his production from Tulane. CJ Daniel's returns to his Liberty form. JoJo, and NyCarr take a few steps forward in their overall development. One of RayRay, Malachi Toney, or Dylan Upshaw really stepping up to produce in the slot for us. Probably the most important factor is the defense showing vast improvement. Not to forget a relatively healthy year from the team. This is asking a lot from Miami's roster. I know some of you probably question why I have Miami as a 1st round CFP exit and that's because I question Beck's ability to will a team to victory. Football isn't a one player sport but QB is the most important, and impacful, position in the sport. We just had the best player/QB in all of the sport and still failed to reach the ACCCG and CFP so this is no slight against Beck I'm just stating what I think.

If I was a betting man, I think we land somewhere in the middle which would probably be 10 wins. As long as those 10 wins include UF, FSU, and ND I can live with it.

What do you guys think?

Go Canes!
Think this post is too long!

Ok, no great revelation or things not already stated. Only issue is Mario presumable didnā€™t recognize the need for a portal QB after the bowl games. He and staff have seen him for a couple years on the practice field. Shame on them if decision or dire need only surfaced due to bowl game performance. They already knew the deal.

They were always taking a portal QB

I agree, I can see us going 10-2 with Beck, the defense will probably be better, and the oline will be better than it was with Cam

The title gave it away but sure
I was initially going to write this post yesterday but waited to let the excitement fade a bit so I can be as objective as possible.
Should have done it yesterday. Things will only calm up from here.

"Good job Mario" even though you're willing to say "bad job Mario" when necessary.

Yes, yes

This fits with your presentation of his resume.

Okay okay

I'm surprised by that number. But we have Mario ...
I know some of you may be surprised by that number

Ah ha!
but things I factored in: Georgia has a top 5 headcoach in Kirby Smart.
I knew it!

Georgia also has a top 5 program in the nation right now. As things stand right now, I view Miami and UGA having equal offensive talent while Miamj holds an edge at OL, UGA holds an edge at TE and RB with WR being a push.

Interesting, that suggests we have elite talent. Could be good.
Another thing, I'm not sure how much of a leader Carson Beck is; will he be able to will us to victory?
He can't catch the ball for them. And honestly if players need someone to be raw around their face otherwise they won't play good then they shouldn't be on the field. But it is fun to see.

I question it.

Indeed
Another thing to consider with Beck is how will he bounce back from injury?
I think this is everyone's prime concern. How did this just get a sentence buried in that other gobbledygook?

Also, our defense was putrid against any offense with a semblance of a pulse, how much improvement can we expect out of a defense that's going to playing an entirely new system.

Sounds like the topic of five more threads.
The ceiling with Beck is 11 wins during the regular season, an ACCCG appearance and a 1st round CFP appearance/exit.
So I guess our ceiling this past year was 10 games. Interesting that improve defense and still a hopeful top flight quarterback only gets this one more game with our putrid schedule. Yay ND ...

This would require a lot to go right. Beck would have to return to his 2023 form.
I know this is about Beck but you made it about so much more: if the other things are okay then even his 24 form (per your analysis) would be good enough.

Mario continuing to kneel on the ball at the end of games.

Let's not get ahead of ourself.
Adequate kicking from our new kicker.
We will miss Andy. What a tremendous unsung hero.

Improved special teams play.

Now you're posting in fraggles department. Don't get your hopes up.
So I guess to have consistent adequate seasons we need to get a top flight QB in the portal every year. That's fine with me. Hopefully we do better than just make the playoff but that is apparently a big hurdle to finish strong.
What do you guys think?

Go Canes!
Good question. I'm hopeful for a good season from Beck.

Good write-up @Cane4life18. I also think 8-11 wins is the range with Beck for a few reasons:

1. Injuries. Beck's injury is the elephant in the room of course. Just had UCL surgery on his throwing elbow, and while he's expected to make a full recovery and be throwing by late spring, injuries aren't like Madden. He doesn't just get a full health bar and be good to go forever. Injuries are wild cards at any position, and this one sucks.

2. Following the bowl game most of us (including me) looked at our 2025 schedule and predicted 5-7 wins. Now yes that was based off the Ward-less team we saw lose to Iowa State. But Ward, who at his best is a demonstrably better QB than Beck, still only got us to 10 wins. 10 was my predicted ceiling for us last year if Ward stayed healthy and all the bounces bounced our way. It's hard for me to look at our team as a whole, even with recent portal additions on defense, and say we have no ceiling.

3. The defense. I'm glad we're addressing it with our DB additions and a new DC, and I expect instant improvement from 2024's ACC play. That said there are a ton of holes still at DL and LB that need filling. /pause.

4. The rest of our roster. We have a 2025 roster made up of a lot of thoughts and prayers IMO. IF we get a stud portal WR and IF Trader et al step up and IF Lyle and Fletcher can replace Martinez' production and IF we dont miss Arroyo and IF Bain returns to form and IF we get and develop a stud MLB...

5. The Cam Ward effect. We had a record-setting, transcendental offense last year with Ward. Statically it's expected to return a bit to the mean even with a highly seasoned QB like Beck. That means our defense has to get markedly better, our run game has to remain as good or get better, our OL has to continue to keep Beck upright etc. We won 10 on the back of Ward and the offense. Now what?

6. The Mario/Miami/ACC effect. This team has a deserved reputation for November collapses, dating back pre-Manny D even. Couple that with the relative parity we saw in top-15 teams this past year - each one dropping a game or two they "shouldn't have" and any January "playoffs or GTFO" cries seem very premature. Like it or not, it is indeed hard to win. And so far we haven't proven we can do it. Moreover, as we've seen in the playoff ranking system, any non Big2 team will have to be well-nigh perfect in order to earn a spot.

I love the Beck signing. I think he was by far our best QB option once Mateer was off the table. I'm just not ready to predict a playoff run or an ACC Championship until we're done making moves. 8-11 seems reasonable.

I gotta question, and I donā€™t wanna start a new thread. So please answer as many that can see. Is Carson Beck a NFL caliber QB? How does he compare to Mataar from Washington State or whatever his name is?

Mac Jones clone.

System QB, who did well surrounded by elite talent in college against lesser opponents, but will struggle mightily once he gets to the league.

Will be a career backup in the long run in the NFL.

I have a 300 words in the main stating other issues outside of Beck that the team has that may prevent us from reaching the postseason.
