Molly McGrath talks to Behind the U about TVD and Dawson

so did nc state beat them with frosh qb. Not quite sure the point, as Shannon, Golden and Manny also won a few games, they shouldn't have won. Dawson may be fine, too early to tell, however, he did have similar issues at UK and southern Miss where he got fired by both programs.
Ah yes… another TVD turnover special that night was

The head coach is always responsible. Last year was a total disaster that had a carry over to this year for TVD. TVD looks great or awful. There is no middle ground. If he was injured he shouldn’t have played after NC. GT game never left him mentally and that was the issue until he decided to audition for the portal. Move on
There’s no moving on in these parts. It’ll be run into the ground until it reaches China and even then will continue until everyone has their say and then some.

TVD and Drew Rosenhause might fool some casual fans with their latest narrative why he failed here blaming others but not himself but film doesn’t lie. NFL scouts, GMs and college coaches will see through this BS. The only offense he can run is a up tempo, single read on one side of the field and the OC tells him who to throw the ball to on each play. He can’t read defenses and his kryptonite is a Zone defense. An OC has to dumb it down to a basic level that plays become predictable.
the funniest thing about all this is some folks act like Rhett didn't have to sit down and have a one on one come to jeez moment with TVD as well bec he couldn't understand why TVD was struggling and he couldn't get a straight answer from him during regular coaching sessions. This is supposed to be the leader of your offense and team and you have to take him in a room by himself to actually coach him. Obviously the coaches have their issues but TVD needs to do a lot of self scouting because he's going to end up doing the same thing at his next spot.

What changed from his Rs Fr year to the Soph and jr year? Defenses were running zone then. Where did it all go wrong ?

IMO, it is pretty complex.

Redzone failures- we didn't target Young and instead targeted Young, X, and ran it. We also didn't pass out of bunched formations much (see below). Hardly ever went to the one-on-one match-ups out wide. Zero TE play.

Max protection- we tended to have 3 out in routes with 7-8 in zones to hyperprotect a QB that was already hurt. This caused extremely tight windows for WRs who aren't elite and a QB who is hurt.

Then you have bunched formations that we hardly ever passed out of... an easy read to determine a run leading to Safety robbers and stacked boxes to run into. This led to lots of 3rd and longs.

Our mash unit at RB with a lucky day of having 1-2 healthy RBs and not one that played every game.

TE play- forget about it!

Who is to blame? Mario! Why- TVD and Emory were the only two QBs allowed to play. We didn't have a solid backup behind TVD to give him 2-3 games to recover.

No Rambo. TVD throws it up to his playmakers and lets them make plays, he feeds his workhorse. He tries with Restrepo but he just isn't a number one talent. Both Young and George have had opportunities through out the year and they have been too inconsistent in big moments. If TVD had a true number one this year the offense would have been more consistent. Look at McCord and Harrison Jr. He is able to lock on him all day everyday and it doesn't matter

Restrepo is a better version of Mike Harley but he is no Rambo. Had George or Young been a contested catch play maker we would have been less of a trainwreck while TVD was injured.
“TVD throws it up to his playmakers” . . . fact is too often & at critical junctures he blindly threw it to the other team’s playmakers.

Young and George have been "too inconsistent in big moments"? Yeah, that's garbage. But, suuuuure, TVD needs a "true number one", and then you mention Marvin Harrison Jr. Yes, IF ONLY TVD had Marvin Harrison Jr.'s phone number, everything would be fine, TVD could lock in on him for every play, and nobody would ever be able to stop us...

Yeah, that's not true. And to blame George or Young for all of Emory's incompletions and/or all the interceptions that TVD threw?

I can't believe I'm reading this trash, but there it is...

Would add: Lashlee without question a better OC than Gattis and Dawson. Lashlee (as he has done before) made TVD look better than he was.
Lashlee is legit & been excellent as well at SMU, but if you look back. TVD didn’t have pressure or expectations when he stepped in under Lashlee. Played free & easy. The last two years he’s propped up as the man & faced high expectations. Boat load of NIL money, some early & unrealistic draft projections, beat up & injured, struggled reading defense & lost confidence.

I'm going to re-post this, but bigger and with some highlighting.

Two years ago, we had the evidence that TVD wasn't being honest and forthright with his position coach. Two years later, it's still happening.

And, look, Dawson is to blame for some things too. I will never forgive him for not calling "victory formation" against GaTech (no matter how much the Mope Squad tries to blame Mario).

But here it is. TVD won't communicate on an honest basis if something is bothering him.

So many things can be true at same time:

1. Dawson isnt Bill Walsh
2. TVD is a JAG
3. Receivers not that good

Like everything, I'm going to take it with a grain of salt. Granted, that was pretty specific, but maybe some was lost in translation and likely paraphrased. As it was told though, it's not a good look for him. It also begs the question, what were they doing before or at least in the middle?

Our receivers were NOT the problem.

People should actually go to the games and watch the action live, instead of relying on whatever angle the TV network chooses to show you. And certainly NOT listen to the biased yammering of the commentators. Not saying that to you, specifically, but a lot of people miss out on a lot of the action and think that the "outcome" was the whole story.

There were not that many plays all year long when ALL of our receivers were covered (the vaunted "coverage sack"). And our OL was pretty good all year long at giving the QB time to throw, though there were a few breakdowns.

I saw open receivers all year long. Not everyone saw them, particularly the guy holding the ball, but we had plenty of open receivers this year.

Shocker canes beatwriters /digital media trying to undermine the program with made up narratives.

Someone please link to other major programs where this happens…

This right here

Dawson's the guy calling the plays. Not Mario. You did not see Dawson "try" to call victory formation, and then Mario came over to veto that call.

We can try to blame them both for being clueless, but Mirabal was the ONLY one trying to call for victory formation. And last time I checked, TVD looks over at Dawson for the play calls, not Cristobal or Mirabal.

Well, at this point, I guess we just have to acknowledge that TVD is a liar who keeps changing his story...

being able to check the play, is not the same as what the rules are for progressions once the ball is snapped.

but put that aside.

reading between the lines, the problem with TVD is between the ears, and it has nothing to do with him not being intelligent enough to play QB.

We are in agreement, TVD played liked he needed Lasik, but against good teams and good db's they dont separate (George a little). We are running a form of the air raid with a non factor te instead of the 4 wr set typically seen under Leach, Mumme etc. Having a stiff like Mccormick on the field so much, allowed teams to play differently. TVD biggest issue, was missing so many easy checkdowns to the rb's, which were there all day.
