Missouri to hire Miami LB coach Derek Nicholson to same position

Figured. The serial killer coaches linebackers.

So we have 3 open spots now. Who fills them?
That's going to be the exciting part. I know the serial killer coached LBs at Minnesota last year. Regardless of that I feel that with the new rules allowing more on field coaches that we would be foolish not to hire a coach for each position. Let Hetherman hire a LB coach then reinforce/supplement that coaching as he sees fit like the OL has with Mirabal/Cristobal.

The other interesting question is whether Hetherman keeps Jason Taylor and if he does would he make Taylor the DL coach or bring in another coach to help?

Do we bring in one secondary coach or do we hire one for CBs and one for Safeties? Like I said above, I'm in favor of hiring one coach for each position unless there is a candidate who has proven that he can coach the entire secondary at a very high level and even then I would hire another coach just because I can.

I can't wait to start hearing the names!

My guess is JT stays because it was an open secret that he blamed Guidry and the scheme for the way his D line performed. There’s some truth to that not as much as JT would like us to believe just my opinion.
Such an open secret that this is the first I've ever heard of it! I'm not trying to rip you man just saying that I've never heard that before specifically. I have heard many times during the season that there were some conflict within the defensive staff but no specifics were ever given nor do I remember seeing any on this board.

As far as Jason Taylor is concerned, it's difficult for me to say since I'm not there at practice or meetings. He may be right that it was Guidry who was at fault for his DL not performing up to snuff. What I can do is go by what I see and I've honestly never seen any objective evidence that Jason Taylor is a good DL/DE coach on this level. Now if coach Hetherman says that he is a good coach and retains him then that would be good enough for me.

the image is attached how ever I posted it … wasn’t a fan of Kiko either and Wes shouldn’t be given a starting spot next season

Really enjoyed what he brought as a recruiter (most likely a LB or two transfers out after Spring) but that Iowa State game was truly bad LB play.

Iowa State added a gap on the LOS and the LB's had zero idea how to spill it. That is squarely on a LB coach to instill how to fit the run in any scheme they're involved in.

Adding a gap on the LOS changes where you spill, fill, or force and they were lost.

Add to it the fact we were leveraged on the snap outside where our OLB simply wouldn't line up properly, and I'd say he's not a coaching or teaching savant.

LB is largely an instinct position. Much like RB. I'd rather have a recruiter at those positions than a teacher. But I do need a position coach who understands and teaches it in a way that my LB's can line up properly and understand a mid-game adjustment.

I'd have been fine with him returning and Hetherman making sure the LB's understood gaps and run fits, or I'm fine with him leaving and the DC bringing his own coach at whatever spot he feels we need.

Maybe this frees us up to have a dedicated special teams coach.

Like I said Mario is the one that recruits these positions he’s the closer. He gets blame for the roster as well the way it was constructed
And he’s pretty much took responsibility for the roster short comings. More at db but think lb fits as well.

Wes flashed a little more but was inconsistent. Really need him and Popo to step up this season.

I have more confidence in Popo. Last year was his first action. Wes has been here three years. Looked lost his first two seasons and last year was as you mentioned inconsistent. I'm just not seeing a great LB with him. Guys like Shaq, Pickney, Perryman, etc were much better at this stage in the game than Wes.

No surprise here. Bring in Nick Monroe for db’s. Hetherman stated that he watched last seasons tape. l seriously doubt he would want to retain anything having to do with that debacle.. He’ll coach the Lb’s himself

The way our defense played last year I’m totally fine with wiping the slate clean and starting fresh. If you wanna keep Taylor fine, but other than that, “Sayonara!”

Miami LB coach and co-defensive coordinator Derek Nicholson will be taking the LB coach job at Missouri, as reported by ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Nicholson spent two years with the Miami Hurricanes. The defense struggled in his second season, finishing 70th in scoring defense and lagging far behind the nation's top-ranked offense. Nicholson's departure is part of a larger defensive overhaul, as the Canes fired DC Lance Guidry and CB coach Chevis Jackson took the DB coach position at Wake Forest.

Miami recently hired Corey Hetherman from Minnesota as its new defensive coordinator. It bears watching as to whether he will have involvement in the new hires.

Which one of the LB's that he recruited are you excited about?
