This is a good point. I am guessing the hope is his HC experience and his defensive background will compensate for the lack of play-calling, but Mario can't F this up and take that chance, IMO.

Do you have a DC in mind? For me, it has to be someone who has proven to have P4 success.

I have several:

•Rodney Gardner from UTenn. Not a DC, but has been a DL coach for yrs producing draft pick after draft pick. SEC guy, & an excellent recruiter.

•Corey Heatherman. Now this is a wild card. Dude is a former QB turned DC, & we saw him first hand in last yrs bowl vs. Rutgers. He was the LB coach, got promoted to DC for Minnesota this season, & the Gophers was ranked 6th in Defense. Bro was a DC at James Madison prior to their move from the FCS, & they ranked:

1st in Defense (2019)
5th in Defense (2020)
8th in Defense (2021)

Last yr Rutgers ranked 16th in Def, after he left they’ve plummeted to 81st. Minnesota ranked 54th in Def last season, this year as DC they ranked 6th.

•Anthony Poindexter
Currently Co-DC & Safeties Coach for PSU. A UVA legend. Has the former player pedigree & coaching acumen. Knows both the ACC & B1G landscape. Consistently has one of the top units in all of CFB, & a great recruiter. On the younger the side (48 yrs old).

These would be my top 3, & all would be ripe for the taking

May I ask what’s the affinity w/ Fitzgerald who’s a Midwestern guy, a **** poor recruiter, & never have been a DC in his life?

I get it, he was a helluva player in the 90’s, CFB HOFer, but I need ya’ll to convince me
It’s the CIS flavor of the day syndrome. Give it a bit and it’ll be on to the next flavor.

I'm at the point where I'd accept the dirtiest player in the game if they brought in a good unit.

We're hated anyway. Have them snort cocaine from their playsheet on the sideline as far as I'm concerned, just f'ing win.

Co-sign
Blow wins titles.

Ok then it needs to be 2 million. I know at one point Miami wasn’t even paying 1 million for their coordinators a few years back I believe
If you making 2 mil then it’s the coaches scheme that wins. Not his players.

I’m glad you chimed in @Rellyrell

In addition to everything you said, he operated very similarly to Mario but on a smaller scale, tons of authority with little questioning above

He wouldn’t be in my top 50 choices as a DC for Miami

Once it was proven to not work and we couldn't set the edges while doing so I wonder if there was a football reason for continuing to do it.

Beyond Guidry either being completely arrogant or having a stunt addiction what was the actual football reason to do it our literal death. @Coach Macho I'd love the enlightenment if you had the opportunity.
Down & distance usually dictates tendencies.

If it's 2nd & 9 and the offense is 80% pass in those situations, that might give Guidry a reason to call a stunt/blitz.

HOWEVER...

The OC's watch film and chart tendencies too. If they notice that you like to stunt a lot on 2 & long situations, they're going to forego their usual tendency and they're going to run the ball and catch you without gap integrity.

I dont think we should read into experience as a factor too much, I'd prefer a young DC that can recruit differently then Mario and can have solid relationships with the players similar to DVD. aka a regular person unlike robot cia Mario

F it ---- bring in colin McCarthy
Absolutely not.
Experience as a play-caller and a body of good work trumps any recruiting prowess.

Let the position coaches have personality and relationships.

Brother

Poindexter would unlock that coveted UVA/DMVish territory (one thing I had hoped would happen when Golden got here)

Having attended PSU i keep up with their **** and you’re absolutely spot on

which I fully support. If you’re a top DC or OC, that is consistently top 10, and always allowing the talent to be productive and shine, especially in this transfer era, pay them $2mm, and watch your ROI and recruiting go up

Venables sucks as a HC, but if Mario could find a guy like that while at Clemson, pay him market value and it’s money well spent

Good stuff, brother. Thanks for your input.

I am a fan of Heatherman and Poindexter. Either one would be a solid hire.

Whoever it is I feel like they need to be a HC but for the defense. Bring in their own staff and mario is hands off. Let them run their defense and bring in his guys. One cohesive unit. Mel Tucker? Muschamp? Schiano? Fitzgerald? All have their own flaws but would be an upgrade over the mess we had. If we are able to keep our defense and add a few pieces in the portal they could be good.
