Miami-Dade commissioners sound gung-ho about Soccer stadium

If it's for 20,000 people it will be too small. But if they could get it up to 50,000 then they need to make this happen. Then when the soccer team leaves Miami, the Canes can take over. lol

Man, these days I would be happy with 20k attending a UM game. Besides the UFelons game, we didn't have much of an attendance.

50,000? Why? So ESPN can show the 30,000 empty seats first home game? Fan Support for this team is pathetic.

Never fails that some "fan" has to come in and ironically bash our pathetic "fans". We my suck as fans but least we are self loathing too!

Here's the key part from the linked article for all you lazy mofos

James said Friday he is interested in the idea of moving to a stadium built in Miami by a group led by David Beckham.

“We would be interested in exploring any opportunity that makes sense for the program,” James said as the Hurricanes warmed up at Heinz Field before playing Pittsburgh.

To be clear, UM moving to such a stadium is a scenario that is far from reality.

Beckham, the now-retired international soccer star, recently asked the City of Miami to consider allowing his group to build a soccer stadium at PortMiami, a site off the downtown coast. The city has yet to approve the venture and Major League Soccer has yet to give an expansion franchise to Miami.

What the potential stadium could look like is unclear; the Daily Mail (U.K.) reported this week Beckham envisioned a 75,000-seat stadium, while the Miami Herald reported PortMiami had enough space for a building of around 25,000 seats.

Then there are the hurdles UM must clear. The school is five years into a 25-year lease it signed at Sun Life Stadium. Breaking that lease would create a significant legal battle. Also, UM likely would not wish to play in a facility of only 25,000 seats. UM’s average attendance at Sun Life this year is 53,785, its highest total since moving to Sun Life Stadium in 2008.

James said UM officials have not spoken to Beckham’s camp.

Lol @ 25 year contract. Fvckin stupid.

I know, it sucks, right?! I mean, how dare Shalala and UM make a deal that nets UM a ****-ton more money than the OB ever did. How dare she set UM up in good fiscal position for the long-term future of the program. ******* stupid indeed!

Agreeing to 25 years was very short sighted.

Totally disagree. Rumor was that the financial deal that Shalala brokered was mastertful, and that Huizenga would not have agreed to it had UM not agreed to be a long-term tenant.

It gives us plenty of time to make good money on the current deal while scouting for alternatives in the long-range. And given the way that the ownership of Dolphin Stadium has balked at making upgrades recently, I wouldn't doubt that UM's legal team would be able to find loopholes to get us out of the lease once we do find an adequate alternative.

I get what you're saying but I can't see how they would put the Canes in a 25,000 seat stadium. Personally, I think they should have a 35,000 seat stadium that is close enough for the students to be close enough to get excited about. It's hard to blame the fan support right now. The stadium is 22 miles away from the school. It's beyond ridiculous.

STFU about the stadium being too far from campus already.

There are less than 5,000 students that live on campus and a large number of them already go to the games. People like you that regurgitate the the same stupid argument over and over again have no f'n clue. Did you go to school there? I did, and I walked to the metrorail, rode the metrorail, then took a bus to the OB. If students want to go they will. It has nothing to do with proximity to the campus.

We averaged 50k+ in ticket sales this year. Do you think UM is going to give up that revenue?

No team in Miami fills a stadium unless its a winner and its a good game. Ever look at the actual Heat attendance when they play the Milwaukee Bucks?

stop. we need no more than a 42 to 48 k stadium. anythng larger is ridiculous. move the FSU game sun life every other year and be done with it.

I agree completely. Nothing more than 40K, and make is tight, then we might at least to be able to fill it 75%. Our attendance is awful except when we play Noles or Gates. And then more than half are opposing fans. I get so sick when we play FSU because the chant takes over the stadium. A few games I would be surprised if we even had 10K there. ****, 25K would probably do, and like said above move Noles game to the big stadium.

Are you guys being wilfully ignorant? You do know that we get 50k or better in attendance an average of 3-4 games a season, right? The last couple years should not be indicative of what we draw or what we need.

We need 50k, minimum. Anything less would be silly. 50k with the possibility to expand to 58-60k for FSU/VT/other ranked OOC opponent. ***** moving one game a year to some other stadium; that's just stupid.

So fans want Miami to continue its mitakes and move into someone's else stadium that isn't built for College Football? Makes sense.

You have a better option? Please do share; I'll hang up and listen.

How about build your own stadium? Oh I forgot, mankind has a better chance of walking on mars than UM building it's own stadium according to some here. I don't have all the answers but I refuse to believe it can't be done; in fact, I believe it's the inevitable. The question is when?

Not only do you "not have all the answers"...you don't have ANY answers at all. You're just another whiner who refuses to accept the current realities of the situation.

So you wanted to sign a five year deal with Sun Life while having absolutely no alternative plan for year six other than "build a stadium"? Contrary to popular belief, lifetimes don't happen in two hours like in the movies you see at Sunset Place. There's actual long-term planning and vision that must occur.

The Dolphins hate the stadium. I find it hard to believe there exists not one loophole to get out of the stadium if we truly wanted to.

Our lease at JRS is actually very favorable financially for UM. Huizenga knew he was selling the team, and did UM a favor. He knew that the OB was being torn down, and could have really screwed us, but he did not.

This. As much as it a 55,000K stadium owned, in part or full, by UM would help the program fantastically, the lease deal is probably too favorable for us to leave. Add in the schools permanent reluctance to ever want to invest in the football program's future to that large a degree, and I figure we'll be stuck at Joe Robbie's Folly until the Dolphins decide to dynamite the place.

You guys ares smoking crack if you think there were 50,000+ at any game besides UF.

Uh, don't you think that the fact we're playing in Sun Life stadium has something to do with the low attendance figures? Christ, every single game we play, we have threads on here about how crappy the stadium is, and how no one wants to go to games.

We won't be moving because Donna doesn't give a ****, about football....worst President in UM history, I wish some other University would snatch her away, she's ran the football program into the ground, Sun Life is the worst stadium in America, here's to another 20 yrs at that dump

R.I.P. The Orange Bowl

No offense NoVACane but you're a complete idiot. I also guarantee you did not attend the school.

The key is the long term lease.

I know most of the people on this site still live at home, but for future reference: if you break a long term lease you get financially butt fuucked.

No way the school voluntarily takes it up the culo by breaking the lease.

There's no way that Blake James would say that we're actively looking at options if he (and Shalala by extension) felt we'd never get out of the lease.

0 chance UM plays at a 20-25k stadium. 25 year lease at no life. As much BS and jokes that are made of no-life, there is consistently 30-35k, with paid attendance over 50k per game, even for the boring D2 school games. We get in the 45-50 for the VT, GT types, and sell out the FSU UF types.

How the **** they going to a 25k stadium???

I swear some of you all have to walk around with crash helmets to protect from head injuries....

Get it through your narrow empty ******* skulls. We are not leaving no-life for another 20 years. AIN'T happening, no matter how many pictures of the old OB you post, and drawings of a tropical park field, pulling at the heart strings of history, imagination of some kid in art school draws a beautiful picture, blah, blah, blah..... This **** isn't going to happen. Period. Let it the **** go.

When do the Marlins leave town? I want to go back to the hallowed ground of the OB soaked in the sweet of our heroes and drenched in the blood of our victims. Is there room for a footfall field in the new stadium?
