Miami at FSU visitors

Gotcha. I don't think Mario puts as much stock into the portal as he does HS recruiting. And it's the reason I've said on this board probably 100 times over the past year that FSU is going to be a fascinating case study on how to build a roster in the portal era. Something like 15 of their 22 starters are portal kids. Many are one year rentals. They're obviously having a good year. But are they building a sustainable program? Are they going to be good year after year with this model? Up to this point, the only way to build a sustainable program was to recruit at an elite level. Period. With the portal, there's a chance that might not be entirely true. But when Wilson and Verse and Benson and Coleman and Cypress and Fiske and Bell leave FSU after this year, and they replace them with kids they recruited in their classes that ranked in the 20's, will they be a Top 5 team year after year? We'll see.
The portal won't be closing. They also have the option to replace those starters the same as before with the portal. We have lost sight of that tidbit.

I understand how it works. My point for the last year has been, will it be possible to build and sustain a Top 10-ish college football program recruiting in the 20's and raiding the portal? I don't know the answer. Nobody does. Up until this point, in the entire history of the sport, the only way to build a sustaining program who competes every single year at the top of the sport was to recruit high school athletes at an elite level. This is literal fact. Now, the portal has changed things. So there becomes a new way to possibly skin a cat. That's what FSU is attempting to do. They haven't recruited HS kids at the level necessary to compete annually with the programs that have. But they have gotten a ton of high level kids in the portal. Can you build a sustainable program that way? We will find out over the next 2-3 years.

At this point, I dont even care about sustaining. I would trade one great year for another miserable 20. That being said I hope they crash and burn over the next month. I hate seeing a successful Fsu program more than running the ball with :30 seconds left.

Who really cares about sustaining at this point. We’ve sucked **** for over 20 years. I’d be happy with a good year no matter how we got it lol

Well the guy who just moved his and his other coaches families across the country feels differently. And I don't mean to be condescending, I see your point. I am starved for one good year too. I'm just saying that there has only ever been one blueprint on how to do this. Literally ever. And it's what Mario happens to do best. That's why he's here. So he's going to follow the blueprint that he knows works when it's done correctly. FSU is taking an alterior method. Maybe their blueprint works too. Maybe it works even better. Nobody knows, this free-for-all portal era is brand new. But Mario took this job to turn this program into a sustainable success. Will that happen? We don't know, but that's why he came here and that's why we brought him here. Not to be 2022 TCU, as fun as that probably was for their fans. I don't think that's what he's trying to do here.

Mario has actually gone on record and said that himself, he feels it's better to build thru high school recruiting..

I don't blame him one bit. Again, it's literally the only thing that's ever worked. It might prove to be short-sighted over the next few years, as maybe there are teams like fsu who average classes in the 20s but hit on portal kids and coach and develop well and compete every single season. It's possible. That's why I've said for a year it'll be fascinating to me to see how all this plays out, because as of now, Mario is 100% correct. The way to build a program that just reloads is to stack top 10 class after top 10 class, or even top 5-7 if you wanna be truly elite. At that point, you're Bama, you're UGA, you're taint. But maybe this model fsu is running is sustainable. They do look like they're going to get a very good class because now they're winning, so maybe you just kick it off via the portal and then you can run with the HS classes. Again, we'll see. It's very interesting.

Aren’t you the one saying it’s not good to rely on the portal for QB next year lol?

You're changing your tune. We attacked needs in the portal too.

The big positive for FSU is they took Travis as a flyer at QB, he was awful, but they took time, and he has been in the same offense for 4 years now. He finally in 2022 played well.

If he gets injured they are done.

That's the big reason they are so good offensively. Coleman was the Cherry on top this off-season.

But make no mistake, Travis makes the whole thing go.

100%

He'll be a tough act to follow.

Or..........they can go in the portal and get a Coleman, Cypress, Fiske, and Bell just like they did previously.

And in reference to Fiske....they wont need to go in the portal since they snatched our starting dt out of the portal in Darrell Jackson who will start next year for them.

The way to build a sustainable program is to.....win. They appear to be doing that the last 2 years. All because of the PORTAL, all the while our fans are hoping and wishing it isnt possible for them. They will forever be a portal destination just like we have been.

Still cant believe we got Harrell and havent even sent him deep once.. slot fade in endzone against temple not really letting him use his speed in open field.. :snoopfacepalm:

WHAT. THE. ****.
A reporter asked Cristobal why Brashard Smith wasn't used much against NCST to which Cristobal responded that we tried to get Brashard the ball on a slot fade in the end zone. "We tried to get Brashard the ball on a slot fade in the end zone." I was speechless. This guy is an absolute toolbag. I know that has nothing to do with Harrell but it goes with the overall theme of misuse of personnel. A total clown show.

We need a good performance this weekend. Texas A&M like in terms of being competitive and not looking like a B.C times type of offense.

I hope we win. Doubtful!

Just don’t go up there and have a repeat of last year.

Play hard, show some progress and try to show recruits a positive path of growth.
