I saw one of the wildest stats I've ever seen in my life this morning on Wake.
Follow me here.
For the season, nationally, Wake Forest is third to last in the entire country in 10+ yard plays allowed. The only 2 worse are Kent State, who is one of the worst FBS teams in a long time, and Oklahoma State, who is 3-7. They are beyond bad in this metric.
HOWEVER, and again, this is INSANE, they are 5th in the entire country in 30+ yard plays allowed.
They have surrendered 180 plays of 10+ yards in 10 games. 18 times a game, they give up a 10+ yard gain. That is AWFUL.
But of those 180 plays, only NINE of them have gone for 30+ yards. That's almost as impressive as giving up the 180 in the first place.
What does this mean for us? Well, when the offense has had issues, one of the theories as to why is Cam is looking too much for a big play, and there are plays to be had underneath. Looks to me like that will be a big part of this game. The Wake defense clearly is designed to limit big plays at the expense of allowing smaller explosives. You can't get these numbers across 10 games by coincidence. I've never seen a disparity like this in my life. Normally, when you give up explosives, they're somewhat bad across the board. You're never the worst in the country at 10+ yard plays and best in the country at 30+ yard plays.
Will the offense understand this and "take what's given"? If we do, with how efficient we are, we can absolutely bludgeon this team with 15-20 yard plays right down the field, and pop a few bigger ones when they're there.
