Miami -23 vs. Wake

I saw one of the wildest stats I've ever seen in my life this morning on Wake.

Follow me here.

For the season, nationally, Wake Forest is third to last in the entire country in 10+ yard plays allowed. The only 2 worse are Kent State, who is one of the worst FBS teams in a long time, and Oklahoma State, who is 3-7. They are beyond bad in this metric.

HOWEVER, and again, this is INSANE, they are 5th in the entire country in 30+ yard plays allowed.

They have surrendered 180 plays of 10+ yards in 10 games. 18 times a game, they give up a 10+ yard gain. That is AWFUL.

But of those 180 plays, only NINE of them have gone for 30+ yards. That's almost as impressive as giving up the 180 in the first place.

What does this mean for us? Well, when the offense has had issues, one of the theories as to why is Cam is looking too much for a big play, and there are plays to be had underneath. Looks to me like that will be a big part of this game. The Wake defense clearly is designed to limit big plays at the expense of allowing smaller explosives. You can't get these numbers across 10 games by coincidence. I've never seen a disparity like this in my life. Normally, when you give up explosives, they're somewhat bad across the board. You're never the worst in the country at 10+ yard plays and best in the country at 30+ yard plays.

Will the offense understand this and "take what's given"? If we do, with how efficient we are, we can absolutely bludgeon this team with 15-20 yard plays right down the field, and pop a few bigger ones when they're there.
Never noticed the statistical evidence but you clearly see this when you watch them play. They just dont have the horses so Clawson gameplans it this way. Sit back, keep everything in front of them and take away the big plays at the expense of the short stuff. Force teams to be smart/patient and hope for a mistake like a holding call or turnover. It also makes you burn clock and limits possessions.

Their offense compliments that. They are going to try and get some long drives on O, shorten the game and make us run the ball and take the underneath stuff. They will basically give us that.

I am curious to see how Cam responds. Its a good test for his discipline because I dont think its how he likes to play but it should be easy pitch and catch all day.

That stat is a great find and if our coaches do not see that then I don't know what to tell you.

Be patient. 10 play drives ,if that is what it takes and hopefully Cam can stay patient.

Well I’m not saying don’t be who we are. We’re one of the most explosive teams in America. Do you. A good team dictates how the game is played, not the other way around. But at the same time, you gotta realize what I call “free food”. You’re just gonna let all my athletes have space 5-15 yards from the LOS? Got it. I’ll take it and we’ll make you miss in space. Just don’t force things that aren’t there.

To be fair, I havent seen a ton of "scheming" on offense all year, outside of a few formations.

Seems like we just run our offense and run plays off things we've set up prior weeks. Maybe Im wrong, but seems like they just check into something based on what the defense is doing at the time.

Hard to explain what I'm thinking the right way.
