Mark D'Onofrio to face Georgia Tech's spread option attack

* D'Onofrio said Raphael Kirby was a standout in the game.

"You saw him really play fast," D'Onofrio said.

That's exactly what I said about Kirby after the game. It was the first time since his HS highlights that I saw him play fast. What a gigantic difference that makes. He will continue to get better and better too.

I noticed it, too. He was laying serious wood.

These reps are valuable because he'll be taking over in the middle next year.

I'm surprised that one hit wasn't flagged for helmet to helmet. He's a big ****** boy though. Next year should be a big one for him.

It's a weird ruling. If you make contact on an angle it's not called as targeting/helmet to helmet and when they wrap up it apparently helps change perception.

This is how it used to be done here when our coaches had a clue how to build rosters. We didn't get stuck having to throw a bunch of true freshmans to the wolves. We'd get guys reps behind veterans slowly and let them eventually take over.

I will say I've been a big critic of Dorito but I love this hybrid defense and the multiple personnel. Will be interesting to see what they run Saturday.

13 guys on a sack...

Seems legit

Coach D has entered the new age of playing collegiate defense. Satan's defense plays the game on a triangle field, and coach D is able to generate a sack with 13 guys. It's just a beautiful thing to see.

We don't need a sack. We need sack-fumble. A sack is a selfish play. If they're not trying to get the ball out, then it's really a selfish play. You get an opportunity to hit the quarterback in the back, the ball better come out.

We have experience and size on the inside something we really didn't have a lot of last season I like us to suit them down to no more than 10 pts

Agreed... The only thing that concerns me about Tech this year is their passing game. The reasons being is that their QB was an actual passer in HS and their WRs have a knack of catching passes to extend drives. Other than that, I feel really good about Porter and company stopping the running game.

He will be a difference maker in the middle if he continues to play that fast.

Laid some serious wood out there.

Perryman and Porter didn't even play last year, according to Golden. I also like how he said they don't just prepare for GT the week before. They practice getting off the cut-blocks every day, even in the spring. It's all about assignments. Two years ago, Miami dominated with a halfway mature defense. Last year, there were too many freshmen, blown assignments, and explosive plays. GT will be facing a completely different defense this year.

GT will come in seeking pay back for last year and the previous three, but I am confident Coach D will have us ready to play. Whenever you play them you really have to be alert because of all their cut blocking. If we get on top early I predict a long afternoon for the Yellow Jackets.

I think he was 7-24 against Vag Tech. GT relies on surprise with their unsophisticated passing game. The only way their passing game works is if their running game is really clicking. Otherwise, that grade school passing game is worthless. Force them into obvious passing situations and tee off.

Here is a post I had earlier below:

Good stuff as always Dan...

Here is GT in a nut shell.

- They are 3-1 (2-1), the record of their opponents is 9-10.
- GT has played one game this year on the road against Duke
- We know about the option but here is their passing statistics:

Vlad Lee 29-64 (49%) for 562 Yards 7 TDs 3 INTs

The crazy thing is the majority of those stats came against teams with poor defense, against VT

7 for 24 (29%) 144 Yards 2 INTs.

The sad part is GT was never out of the game, they were able to stick to their option attack yet they couldn't do much.

- GT's advantage is that they had an extra long week to prepare for us but they still have to travel.

This is my favorite matchup for the year for our defense. There's nothing like watching 5 guys dive at or DL's knees every snap like a bunch of ******* retards.

I hate this mentality personally. Too many guys going for the strip tend to miss for tackles historically. I prefer to rap up and hit hard. Fumbles will come.

If a QB gets out of a blind site hit for any reason we have bigger issues than someone going for a strip.

Pardon my ignorance, but since when does GT run a spread option offense?

They aren't! Technically speaking, they aren't even running a true triple option. Their QB has never ran that type of offense before so I think they are running a variation of the option. I watched them against Va Tech and it wasn't the normal offense they run. Their QB looks lost trying to run it.

I believe that's what Johnson labels his offense, but agree that it is misnomer. I've always considered Urban Meyer's offense and similar systems to be the 'spread option' as its run out of a spread formation and utilizes read option as its primary play. Johnson's offense is run out of the flexbone and other than how the backs are lined up, is not that different from the offense OU ran in the 80s.
