*RIVALS*
Defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio is busy getting his team ready to face Georgia Tech's spread option attack.
"You have to really be disciplined," D'Onofrio said. "It really only takes one guy to be out of his gap for you to get gashed. It's magnified 10 times against these guys. They really take advantage of you if you really don't lock in and do your job."
Because of the physical running attack of Georgia Tech, personnel decisions could be different on UM's defense in this game. But D'Onofrio said the team will still find a way to get LB/rush end Tyriq McCord on the field. McCord excels at getting after the QB but isn't as good at stopping the run.
"We have enough depth that we can use different guys in different situations," D'Onofrio said. "We'll see how it all plays out."
D'Onofrio said "it's good" that most of this defense played roles in last year's game, a high scoring Cane victory at Georgia Tech.
"We continue to enhance what we want to do against these guys and develop a package because we've got older guys," he said.
Any new wrinkles on the Georgia Tech offense?
"There's always new wrinkles," D'Onofrio said. "They do a great job. They're multiple formations, multiple plays. They're threats to run the ball and pass the ball. That's a tremendous challenge."
The bottom line, though, is that this is a scary offense for any defense to go up against.
"You just run scared, do the best you can," D'Onofrio said. "Guys have to trust their keys, do their job and be disciplined."
* D'Onofrio said, with the team having 16 sacks, he's happy that it's spread around.
"You see 16 sacks, but you see 13 guys in on a sack," D'Onofrio said. "You see six interceptions - five guys have interceptions. You see seven caused fumbles, seven guys caused the fumbles. Seven guys recovered it. There's a lot going on that's being spread around, and that's a sign of guys that are unselfish trying to do their job in a defense."
D'Onofrio said he isn't sure how many of the team's sacks have come on blitzes but that it was "quite a few."
* Of Deon Bush's play on Saturday, D'Onofrio said, "We brought him on a safety blitz and he doesn't have a problem going forward and accelerating and he's not afraid of contact. It was good execution (getting a turnover on that play). We don't need a sack. We need sack-fumble. A sack is a selfish play. If they're not trying to get the ball out, then it's really a selfish play. You get an opportunity to hit the quarterback in the back, the ball better come out."
D'Onofrio said he thinks Bush is turning the corner coming off hernia surgery.
"He missed a lot of the summer, a lot of training camp - he's still (coming back)," D'Onofrio said. "He's moving in the right direction."
* D'Onofrio said Raphael Kirby was a standout in the game.
"You saw him really play fast," D'Onofrio said.
* DE Shayon Green, when asked about his first sack as a Cane vs. USF, said, "He came my way and I got it. It was an adrenaline rush, exciting."
