Lu, How do we attack F$U on offense and defense?

You all think Tevin will always be on Duke should that happen?

If I'm FSU, I tell Telvin this is his opportunity to show out against a marquee guy. But, realistically, I focus on Duke with even 2 defenders and take my chances on Morris hitting that seam route or deep in down the middle of the field.

Morris and the seam route scares me tremendously. It requires patience, looking off the safety a bit and touch/air. I don't know if he has those right now.

I would like to see us run some play action passes on first down and hopefully Morris has a man open deep or checks it down.

I think our nest unit up front would be Flowers-Feliciano-Wheeler-Lineder-Henderson - run it down their throats and punish their front
7 players. Duke averages 7yds a carry up the middle.

We ran a great middle screen to Mike James against UNC a couple years on their 5 and scored. It was a great call and I would like to
see us run one of these in a similar situation against FSU. We can't settle for field goals or have turnovers in the red zone.

On Defense I would like to see some pre-snap movement and hide our coverages better. He is still a rookie and I don't think we should sit
back and make it easy for him.

We do a good job of making teams go the whole field on longer drives and haven't been giving up too many big plays - Ebron was a lucky play
and Cornelius should have made an easy tackle on the last Wake TD.

I hope that the real Bush shows up for this game, our LB's make plays, Howard can keep Greene from having a big game, we can cause some
turnovers and that we can collapse the pocket and get Winston uncomfortable............. Time to show up and play a full 60 minutes.

Here's the pass we have to hit. Ryan Williams throws it here. Good anticipation and touch. If Morris can make this throw on Saturday, we've got a shot:

Here's something that is difficult to see on TV, but watching live games is fairly apparent: poorly disguised coverages.

We often to show our Cover 3 look way too early. You literally see one Safety roll down and one Safety (like the one pictured above), flash to play Centerfield. In this play above, it was done far too early. The QB saw it (can see him look up before the ball is snapped) and realized the Safety wouldn't be able to get to R. Scott's 9 route on the wide side of the field. It resulted in a long pass and catch. This is something to look out for from Winston/Benjamin. If we roll to the middle far too early and show someone like Benjamin in 1 on 1 out wide, I obviously expect them to take their shots.

I don't think we have a choice in showing early when it comes to this group of safeties. None of them, save maybe Rayshawn, can run somebody down from behind or even a less than optimal angle right now. 30 and 2 look like they have pianos strapped to their backs for one reason or another, so they have to reveal intentions way before the snap or they'll simply not get there in time. That's my theory, anyway. We need way better athletes at that position in the future.

Here's the play I had previous captured a screenshot from FSU-Clemson 2013, but you can see Morris running it here a few seasons ago:

CanesInsight8.webp

3 Verticals. Combination Crossing routes underneath. Target: RB across the middle. Easy read for the QB.

Also...

Sending Duke on routes in the middle of the field will open up things as well.

Run those LB's off with vertical releases from the WR's...and as those LB's get depth in their drop you should be able to dump it off to Duke for a minimum of 6 yards. If the LB's honor Duke then you should be able to steal something behind them. (i.e. dig, post, etc.)

As a defensive coach I can tell you this concept is a **** to defend, especially when you got a guy like Duke. Now the LB's don't get adequate depth in their drops (cause they're worried about Duke) which opens things up in the middle of the field.

That's what I showed in the pic on post #66. Clemson tried to do this. Problem is two-fold for us: (1) will our OL hold up? and (2) even if Duke beats Telvin Smith, is Morris able to hit him in stride?

Here's the pic again:

I saw the play in the Wake Forest game. I don't remember if it was pressure or Morris went some place else but I saw the play run with Duke in there.

I realize people will say "Morris is who he is and we can't expect more," but if we want to win on Saturday, this play (mind you, this is from literally his first game) is the TYPE of play where we need him to quickly see a problem and look to the secondary read (up top). If he can do that, again, we've got a shot:

I agree. I think we have to take our chances w/ Jenkins making the play. Showing it too early is a near-automatic death sentence.

Todd McShay has a good write up on defending Winston on ESPN insider. Basically gives a lot of credit to his recievers and says you have to play soft and tackle. Also talks about locating the ball for the DBs because Winston throws it up a lot and if DBs can locate he can/should get picked. If you do bring pressure, make him go to his left because he's very good on the run to his right.

It can be done if Gunter plays safety again opposite RJ.

Why has Morris stayed away from the middle of the field in your opinion? Is he just not reading things right or is he stubborn wanting the big play downfield?

IMHO I think he struggles to read the LBs and Safeties. I think he's scared to get picked and feels safer on the deep outs and 9s. In the pic above he's got to read that LB and S.....is that crossing route there if that LB steps up?? What about that safety, looks like he's jumping the crossing route.....quick read to hit the post over the top? Where's the field side safety? Is he rotating to the middle?

Go play action first play and send Coley deep... this will keep them honest... also spread them wide and thin... and run draw plays right up that ***... run will routs, crossing patterns and confuse the safeties. Then hit them with the TE seams up the middle...
On defense... hit em and hit em hard... run d-line stunts... play #17, #11, & #98 a bit more... we need jameis uncomfortable all night long... we have to spy Jameis with a LB... this LB has to play the underneath routs and QB spy... I pick DP for the job got to close on him quickly... and blitz we must blitz... I dont care where it comes from just blitz... that means man to man with there tall WR I know... but thats what champions are made out of... we have playmakers on Def... let them make plays... "they are on scholarship too..."

Am I the only one that would like to see a productive 5 yard gain on first down? 2nd/3rd and long on the first drive gets everyone jumpy

Should be able to throw a dig here to #2 WR.

Ok, here's my problem with this picture.

Clearly it's Cover-3, which means we're rolling one of the Safeties down and the other one up.

Why would you roll your Safety down to the boundary instead of the field? Now you have a LB covering all that space to the field instead of a more athletic Safety. Plus, if you roll that Safety (the guy you circled) down to the field instead, you can put that OLB back in the box instead of having him wayyyy out there. (notice we only have 6 in the box)

This picture would give me wood if I was an OC. It's like stealing candy from a baby. I can run a seam route or a slant with that slot WR to the field. If that OLB on the slot WR sits on the slant or seam I can throw the hitch or dig to #1. I can run double-slants up there also. That'll be open. I can hand the ball off to the RB...LT kicks out the DE, Center blocks the NT, LG chips on the NT and moves to the LB. Easy 8 yards or so right up the left B-gap. SMH

Kansas State, Notre Dame and a few other teams agree with your analysis.

As for the coverage part, wait till FSU comes out with the standard 3WR, 2RB or 3WR 1RB 1H-back (O'Leary) sets. 2 WRs are lined up to the field side ala this picture. If we keep 3 LBs in the game...

I guess here's a question: do we think D'Ono will have Gunter at Safety and play more Nickel w/ Artie/Crawford/Howard?
