Lu, How do we attack F$U on offense and defense?

Against what I've seen us do, we'd need R. Jenkins to have the game of his life AND work in unison with Perryman/Gaines to consistently stop this attack. Another way to address it is to go with what some have called for: take your chances with the pass rushers (Mccord and AQM) to disrupt things on earlier downs. If we stay in our predictable DL package and set and FSU does this, Winston will have more than enough time to read a simple combination in the middle of the field. See below:

I don't think we have the horses at LB and SS to hang, all other things being equal. The thought of Armbrister, Cornelius and Highsmith in space against their WRs or RBs is not a comforting one. Will need to invoke the holy spirit and tackle, tackle, tackle. Generating an early turnover (and converting it into points) would be huge. And if Winstrol is half the QB the entire country thinks he is, the second he sees 17 or 98 on the field before a passing sitch on 3rd down, he should be audibling to a power run at either of them. Seems like an easy way to neutralize that particular tactic, should it ever come up.

Ultimately, getting exotic would be extremely out of character for this staff so don't hold your breath. I'm not expecting anything earth-shattering other than a few more blitzes to test Winstrol's decision-making. We'll play safe, attempt keep things in front of us and try to knock their heads off and force a fumble or three. And if we can actually generate a pass rush with 4, it might be enough to keep it close for a while. After that, just hope the good version of Morris shows up.

Cornelius has probably been our best LB in coverage this season, but agree in space those macth-ups are not in our favor. I would agree with you that I expect to see more of the bend don't break defense, but would love to see us send pressure right up the A gap to get in Winston's face and make him think faster and hopefully force him into some TO's. IMO we can't afford to let him sit in the pocket and pick us apart because he has the accuracy and targets to make our night miserable. Would love to see a healthier D. Bush as well with hopes that he can blitz a little and provide some range in the back end of the defense.

The truth is that I don't think those guys are as bad against the run as they're made out to be. Are they as good as Chick and Green? Maybe not. But, this is where I'd take my chances. Like you said, we're gonna need things to fall our way. An errant throw. A dropped snap. **** like that. I rather see us in 5 DBs basically the entire game. They'll go to the 2 RBs and 3WR Shotgun formation. They'll run it with Freeman (outside) and Wilder. Maybe we're able to play with our heads on fire and tackle those guys. Maybe Mccord makes a play and one of those plays goes for -1. Then they're in 2nd and 11. I agree we won't see anything fancy from our defense other than some DB blitzing. I guess what I'm saying is I don't think it's overly fancy to just take your chances with the upfield guys and force them to run the ball. It plays to our benefit of shortening the game.

I attended a clinic by Pruitt last March. Dude had some nice concepts. He spoke alot about what he likes to do against trips formation.

/cool story

They do fire zone stuff, no? They haven't really had to show a lot of it, but I'm deathly afraid of Christian Jones blitzing the B-gap, a Safety coming hard off the edge, and Morris throwing the ball directly at one of their DEs who dropped in coverage.

I just sh*t my pants at this thought.

Screen to Duke. 75 yard TD.

Got eeemmmm

We gotta be saving it for something, right? RIGHT?

Against trips he'll play man technique on the #1 receiver in the trips side. Locked up.

Against the remaining WR's in the trips (2 and 3) he'll play cover-2-sink.

On the single WR side he now has 2 defenders (CB and FS) for 1 WR. The FS becomes a "cutter", meaning he cuts underneath any routes from that single WR. This allows him to send the ILB and OLB from that side without being vulnerable to slants or any other inside route. (now he can send 5 at QB and have all zones covered)

If the offense tries to run 4 verticals you end up with 5 deep defenders.

Seems like we could hit a flare to Duke out of the backfield and take advantage of their 5 DB's playing deep.

Run a pitchout. One pitchout out of trips/bunch. Go to :44 --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=al32pM_M7gE

IMO, it is going to be very difficult to run the ball down their throats from the beginning of the game. You have got to think that they will be gameplanning to stop the run and force Morris to beat them. We have to have some early success throwing the ball or we don't stand a chance.

Which is why I can envision us coming out throwing the ball. FSU will be thinking we're scared to put the game in Morris's hands and are looking to shorten the game, so they'll probably be teeing off on the run game right off the bat.

****, I hope FSU is dumb enough to think that. We have nothing to lose and a gunslinger at QB with dangerous weapons. All the pressure is on them. I hope we come out firing.

Seems like even though the defensive scheme is different from last year Coley should be familiar enough with the players on F$U's defense that he can devise a gameplan that can put them on their heels a little bit.

Haven't run a pitchout all year. I'd be less surprised if he ran some down the line option with Morris. I've at least seen that from one of those CanesCamp reports.

It will be interesting to see how the Pruitt/Coley matchup will go. Both are (basically) first time coordinators.

I'm aware. I'm half-jokingly holding on to this hope that there are certain things we've intentionally not run.

You get into the always squishy "Fisch's playbook is not Coley's playbook". Maybe Coley doesn't like pitch outs. /shrug

They won't let Duke just run a flare all by himself. There's several ways to run this coverage and defend the flare. (atleast these are the ways that I use)

1. The blitzing OLB is a "peel" player, meaning he's blitzing but he peels if the RB peels. He basically ends up playing 'man' on the RB if he flares.
2. The ILB to the weak-side doesn't blitz at all. He becomes the "expander", meaning he expands his zone to the flats if the RB flares.
3. On the single WR side you play Cover-3 (FS covers flare) or Cover-2 (CB covers flare).

What I said about blitzing the ILB and OLB (bringing 5) is just a rinkle that I put in. It's not what Pruitt does, however he does have the option to do so.

He doesn't run this coverage against trips-bunch.

Against regular trips the Sam LB or Nickel is outside leverage on the #2 WR, which means he can easily set the edge.
The DE is most likely gonna be Pruitt's 5-technique which will allow FSU to disrupt the toss.

I like that toss out of bunch. Regular trips, not so much.
