Louisville defense has been weak against running QBs

People are acting soft shouldred about cam running… we aren’t asking him to be a battering ram like Josh Allen

Just enough to keep the defense honest when they fail to account for him and pick up the easy 5-10 yards. Cam is smart he’s been great about finding the sideline and getting down before contact

There is a big difference between what you’re describing and designed QB runs. IIRC, we haven’t called a single designed run for Cam all season. That’s obviously by design. We haven’t even run much zone read, and when we have, he’s never pulled the ball to run. He pulled it to throw on the winning TD last week.

I’m fine with this. I said a few times in the summer that i thought Dawson would scheme up some designed runs for him, but @Brooklyndee was quick to let me know (and rightfully so) there is no reason to intentionally put him in harms way like that. And guess what? We’re #1 in the country in like 7 categories on offense. He’s right. I do think you’ll see something at some point, but let Cam keep being Cam. This is a pass first offense with a QB who can feel/escape pressure and his awareness setting is 100. He’ll run when it’s there.

It would just be nice if we didn’t have to out score everyone the rest of the way. We’re good for forty pretty much every week. It would be nice if the defense didn’t surrender 39.

I don’t think we’ve run a straight up zone read this year. It’s always a read/RPO.

Disagree. I think the dominance is almost entirely in the hands of the offense. If the offense is misfiring again in the first half, we have a dogfight til the end. If the offense plays well in the first half , we end up winning by at least 2 scores.

VT game, first series ends with fumble. VT only has to go 35 yards or so to score a TD. Miami answers with a TD, then also gets the inevitable George personal foul penalty. The Miami D then gets a pick. UM gets ball at 50 yd line and scores a TD. Defense forces punt on next VT series.

Up 14-7, looks like we are on good shape. What happens next? Ward INT in the red zone. Big momentum shift. VT then scores a TD to tie it up( UM d even forces a fumble just before the big VT run, but they recovered it ). Next UM series ends in punt. VT scores a legit TD after driving length of field ( Should have been 21-14 Miami even with that Td) Next UM possession is another punt. VT gets ball again and D holds them, but the VT kicker nails a 57 yarder.

Cam doesn’t throw that INT in the red zone, we go into halftime with a 21-17 lead. Instead it’s 24-17 VT with them getting the kickoff to start the 2nd half.
That's fair, but throw a different perspective.
We scored 38 against VT, 39 against Cal and average 46 ppg. To me the variance in the offence is pretty low. Even our 'off games' offensively, are still resulting in nearly 40 points.

If we have an off game offensively and a bad defensive game the score could be 38-35, 42-40 or something in that range and it's a dog fight.

If the defence does their job...AND we have an off game offensively then the score is 35-21 or 38-17. That looks like dominance, compared with the first example.

The point is the offence is probably going to score (there will be a game where that doesn't happen), but comfortable 2 score wins occur when the defence plays well. Can't give up 38 points to Cal, regardless of offensive turnovers or bad field position.

We have to outscore EVERY team from here on out if we want to be successful. But I get what you were trying to say.

Last year they played a Thursday game before ours so Brohm had a couple extra days to really scheme it up. This year they are coming off a Saturday road trip and we have the extra time to prepare.

They will score because they have a good offense but overall, I think Guidry will get it done.

Me either. Not that I can remember. Not a single QB draw. Not a single QB lead off tackle. Not a single QB sweep. Not a single zone read. Dawson has completely sharpied out all the plays in the playbook that have a hint of designed QB run. It’s the backs, or it’s throw the football and if you need to run, go ahead.

Re-read what I said… Im not saying we need to run a QB power play like Josh Allen. I’m saying we shouldn’t limit cam from running when he isn’t accounted for because the defense sells out on the pass.

Nobody is limiting cam in any capacity. He has free reign to do whatever he wants. As he should.

The way this board talks about Cam is astounding...

You'd think we still have TVD at QB, rather than the literal frontrunner for the Heisman.
Can’t wait to see what they say when they get their wish and Emory takes over

Sometimes I understand why the football gods don’t give us nice things

Start passing early and put up points. In this case the pass opens up the run game. Running early only puts us in 3rd and long situations.
The gods gave us Cam Ward for one year…pass the friggen ball.
I’d bench Fletcher and Martinez and put Lofton and Ny Carr back there

I want our leading rusher to be Cam Ward as he causally jogs for 25 while pointing and laughing at the guy trying to tackle him

Georgia Tech - 58 yards

Notre Dame - 52 Yards

SMU - 113 yards

Virginia- 84 Yards

Louisville defense has been prone to allowing QBs run on them this year. I think Cam Ward can definitely continue that trend of hurting them on the ground. If the pass isn’t there, just take off on them or some designed QB runs

In college sacks are counted as negative rushes so the numbers could have been even more.

I was kind of surprised to hear Mario mention (forget which podcast, maybe his weekly show) that the across the body throw that ended up a pick 6 was something he was ok with Cam doing because a lot of what he does is (throwing motion, etc.) is unorthodox and he seems to trust enough in his ability to make uncanny plays that he is willing to live with the mistakes.

I think they are willing to let Cam be Cam and not mess too much with his head thinking about things. Hopefully Cam learns on his own that he doesn't need to be superman on every play and take what the defense gives whether he runs it or checks down.
