Lot's of people will look silly

There was a moment Saturday, our 12th game, when Bush, Howard, and Jenkins were on the playing field together for the first time ever. I smiled to myself, thinking about 2014 when they are juniors, Carter and Burns are true sophomores who played a lot as freshman, and the next hot shot freshmen are pushing them.

there was on play where I saw a safety fly in and make a hit a solid hit.. first thing that came to mind was "that has to be bush"... sure enough.. And Perryman is a monster.. dude just lays people out.

There were certainly some glimpses of a possible bright future along the way this year. On balance tho, very few of them came from the D line. That said, Im not ready to go out and buy any FIU gear at the moment. lol

ima put myself in cryo.

wake me up when this actually happens.

btw. what is the worst defense Shannon fielded, ever?

The D-line is incredibly problematic from a talent standpoint. Chick has an athleticism ceiling. He is never going to to singularly dominate, though I am excited to see him develop. Green led our team in tackles (which is actually a terrible team stat) yet didn't have a single sack (yikes).

DT is worse. Just not sure what we have there right now, though I am hopeful Pierre can keep developing. He keeps getting better. If I am a HS DT I am salivating at the chance to play with the back 7 we have coming up and get instant playing time.

they kept getting worse as he had more responsibility for the players in the D.. the further away we get from the butch players the worse our defense got. I will grant you that, shannon never had a TERRIBLE D like we had this year.. but we're building for the future and we're doing something a bit more complex than what we had done for the last 10 or so years.

If we are ranked in the top 60 in total defense next year our staff will have done a remarkable job and one or more will be interviewed for a HC position.

When Miami is a top 10 defense. I know all the issues we've had this year, but I can assure you that coach Golden and staff are well aware. Calling for D'Onofrio head is premature considering the personel on that side of the ball. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I understand the frustration , but I'm willing to bet the house next year you'll see vastly improvement in all areas.

Golden gives every indication that he's a loyal person, don't expect him to be loyal to Miami, but disloyal to his long time friend. What you see is what you get.

There's lots of work to be done, and a top 10 defense may not happen till year four, however top 25 is not out of the question.

A sign of a good coach is that he still manages to get better play from his unit as the season goes on. This defense was just as awful against Duke as it was against BC. Who got better? Perryman was always good, Chick regressed, Rogers and Highsmith never improved,Howard didn't produce, not one single pass rusher emerged, blown assignments, blown leads, frantic play, chaos before the snap. I could go one but it too sickening to detail.

Youth and talent aside, 2 years is well enough time for an evaluation on a coach and O'No D needs to go.

As for your top 10 or top 25 wishes, shows me you have no clue.[

I may not have a clue, but if you think coach D has to go, I'll color you clueless! He's not going anywhere as long as Golden is head coach.

Just some quick numbers:
in our 7 wins 41 points for and 26 against
in our 5 losses 18 points for and 37 against.

We had a top 40 offense this year...next year we could well be in the top 20 and should be. With an O like that and the defense just making year to year improvement, we finish games and cut down on penalties and get some 3 and outs and we will be very tough to beat.

It could shape up to be a treat.
I'm optimistic obviously...

We're not going to be a top 25 defense next year because our offense will be entirely too fast-paced for those kind of defensive stats.

I'm on record as saying that, despite having a potential Ferrari of an offense, IF Porter stays and we don't get destroyed by multiple DL injuries, we'll jump into the Top 40 next year.

from 116th to top 40? and we didnt show any improvement from the 1st game to the last game? lulz

You're not saying that it's impossible to have a good defense with a fast paced offense are you? I'm probably misinterpreting, but I just want some clarity on that.

I'm saying a fast-paced offense will skew the defensive statistics.

I think we can have a very good defense if Porter comes back and our safeties develop as we expect. It's difficult to evaluate the D'Ono defense because it seems to be predicated on everyone coming together. It's kind of an all or nothing defense. If everyone plays their assignments, and reads reacts perfectly it can dominate, disrupt, and create turnovers. If you get one breakdown, it all falls apart. It's kind of the opposite of the Shannon D where it was so basic that with decent athletes you would always have at least an average to good defense, but probably never take it dominating status (outside of having 5-6 first round draft picks).

I still question coach D'Ono. I don't think he is a very good game day coach, and he never seems to make the right adjustments. If anything, you see every offense get better and better against us as the game goes on. Not a good sign.

The DE spot is worse off than the DT.

Porter, Pierre, Robinson flashed.

Chickillo would be a weapon if the opposite side generated something. McCord, Hamilton can definitely benefit from an off season strength program. Green just didn't get it done, and that's not doing Chickillo's strengths any favors.

There just has to be a pretty big leap in production from McCord, Hoilett, Hamilton, or some stud freshman for the DL play to actually improve its sack production.

Yards per play is a much, much better indicator of how well your defense is playing, along with redzone touchdown conversion % (taking into account trips to the redzone as well), 3rd down conversion %, and possession % that end in punts. Scoring defense and total yardage are too dependent on the offense.

We weren't nearly as good as most people thought we were last year defensively, and, although still really bad this year, not as bad as many people make us out to be. We will need to make a big improvement next year, but I'm not sure if even that kind of improvement will get us anywhere more than what we were in 2011.
