Look to the Transfer Portal: Discussion thread

By far the best player we added and we need to only add players of his caliber or close to. We add more Ladson's than Kiko's.
Lee - awesome
Cohen - awesome
Deen - good, not great
Gore - non-factor
Campbell - non-factor
Kiko - very solid/borderline awesome
Cloyd - meh
Kirk - non-factor
Allen - decent
Richard - great against FSU, not so great against Louisville.
Davis - meh
Cristobal - non-factor
Iowa DB - so bad he re-entered portal
Brown - non-factor
Harrell - non-factor

Way too many non-factors in 2023. Doesn’t mean they can’t become something later, but portal for us needs to be instant impact and full of players that meaningfully contribute.

Portal in 2023 was a disappointment and borderline failure for what we were trying to accomplish, especially with that OL

And that is just '23 lol. I know it's harsh but the coaches should be evaling on a more critical scale can't have a 3:1 meh ratio.

I would love for us to do it too but Mario did mention today on the Joe Rose show that the ncaa was coming hard at teams tampering with players,so I don't know.
Mario isn't going to go on a radio show and openly admit to tampering.

Like HS recruiting, it’s gonna be a dog fight in the portal. Very few sure fire hits as the vast majority of players are leaving their current teams for more playing time.

Why are the vast majority leaving for more playing time? Because they can’t earn it on their current squad due to their own lack of talent or the depth at their position is such that immediate playing time is difficult to get.

The teams with high caliber players will pony up the $$$ to keep them adding to the slim pickings of quality players.

We preaching about evals on HS yet the returns on kids with already developed resumes through the portal has been lukewarm at best.

I cant imagine a number of those kids were 1st choices. The evals need to be better absolutely. But these are kids with college gametape. Its not all on evals.

I think a few things will help.

1st, put a ******* product on the field that the better portal entries would want to play in. Weve now done that on defense.

2nd, all about the benjamins. I think we blew a lot of our budget last year on high school kids. Im really hoping our portal budget is very competitive to land more immediate impact players this cycle.

3rd, pure speculation but I wonder if Marios approach needs to change. His slow, methodical approach with recruiting high schoolers and hiring staff doesnt work in the portal game. Hopefully he has a different philosophy.

"Cloyd - meh"

Fair assessments. Only one I would slightly disagree with is Cloyd. I would put him in the decent category.

I think Campbell was an RS so we got time. Gore was success imo. He had 2 sacks and I expect him to get more run next year.
