Listen Talent is all that matters

Again you need both. The only ultimate trump card is an elite playmaking QB. Cam Newton was able to get it done even though Chizik was a terrible coach. Can't think of any other guy who straight up carried a garbage coach and a garbage defense the way he did to a title.

Very true. I'd put Vince Young in there as well. I never thought highly of Mack Brown. For all the talent he had, only 1 title in 14 years speaks volumes about his coaching ability.

True. Vince threw his team on his back in the title game but there was also a ton of talent on the team and a great defense. What Cam did was crazy because Auburn was average at best before he got there. Mack was a good coach, he just wasn't elite. He even had Duke respectable before his time at Texas.
 
Crying about missing on players from coaches. Sure sign of losers. We out recruit Baylor UCF Boise Ok St. Etc. Their coaches know wtf they are doing. Didnt people laud Golden about turning no stars into draft picks at temple? All on a sudden its nothing but whining when they just step up to steak from dollar burgers? Golden will have a one or two ten win seasons. Thats his ceiling. U can sense great coaches when they get their overmatched team to play out of their skin atleast once or twice. Like Harbaugh at Stanford when they were straight garbage. Golden has never caused and upset.....ever. Does anyone not find that telling?

Not sure which statement was more hilarious, the one about talent being all that matters or the one about Golden being an elite recruiter. OP delivers the gold.
 
You guys can slam him all you want and perhaps justifiably so, but when there are 120 programs and you are consistently getting top 10/20classes under the circumstances, if he's not elite, he's **** close. Yes I know he sits in the middle of crazy talent.... I for one will judge what his first two non ncaa cloud classes look like before locking in my opinion.

I'm not concerned about Al's recruiting. I am concerned about player development and coaching strategy at this point.
 
If talent is all that matters, we are worse off than it appears. UF and FSU PWN us in recruiting once again. (unbelievable that UF can have their worst season in 30+ years, a known dullard for a HC, lose a ton of elite commits to FSU, yet still waylay us in recruiting rankings) :( :( :(

Plus, it is the opinion of some here that Duke and VT are way ahead of us in talent. :(

The class coming in this year has more than enough talent in it to be able to win big time (especially if Kaaya pans out). A couple of more classes like this and a good coach would have a powerhouse.
 
I feel like Al Golden is living off the reputation of recruiting Ahmad Brooks 10 years ago.

I don't think he is an awful recruiter, but the list of guys that Golden and his staff has landed at Miami that would show off their recruiting prowess is limited to less than a handful. I don't count landing South Florida kids as showing off skills. Don't get me wrong, the way we got Tracy Howard is nice. But he lives 15 minutes away. That kid should be expected. I'll give him and his staff credit for Muhammad, McCord, Sandland...but the list stops there.

Plenty of reason to knock Golden but that list is awful. You have guys from all over the country on there

Personally think Golden is an ok recruiter. At this point its crazy for someone to call him elite.

Lost all these guys under a cloud of the death penalty / probation get real look at our classes from 2002 on pathetic... And only golden had to deal with the death penalty hanging over the programs head ... People just dont have a clue

OP is on to something. Think of that Maryland season opener. All Randy's kids. Bunch of guys suspended. We had to go out without talent and it meant we could not stop one **** screen pass. Now think of how strong we finished this year with Al's guys maturing and taking the helm. How can you not be assured that we are trending up? Al's elite recruiting is already paying huge dividends.
 
Howard said all THE U was missing through the years was coaching. Of course he went out and recruited like a champ. Coker proved that with enough 1st round talent, anyone can win one NC. He also proved that with just a little less 1st round talent, the same anyone to lose one too. Talent clearly is first and foremost, but coaching that talent comes in to play also because other teams have talent too. If their coaching is better and talen close -- like OSU was -- we can lose even with the best talent. I know, they cheated, but triple overtime is a close game,
