I have a question about the linebackers. maybe someone with a little more knowledge can help me out.
why do they take a jab step inside before they start the back pedal on that weak zone and even in man coverage? they obviously arent blitzing, so they arent fooling anyone... is it supposed to be a timing thing?
It's called a Read Step.
regardless of what it is called, it doesnt fool anyone but our own players. it messes up the timing on our drop backs and i hate it. if you are going to fake blitz, fake blitz, but dont be little hoes every time your going to drop into coverage and take a step forward just for the **** of it.
It's not a fake blitz and it's not designed to fool anyone. It's a read step. All LB's do this.
As a LB you're a "run first" player. Your primary responsibility is the run, thus your first step is forward. (just like a DB's first steps are back)
It's a read step.
Take the jab step forward. Make your read. If you read run, continue forward. If you read pass, get to your drops.
Yup all this. You take the step and are supposed to react. It has nothing to do with fooling anyone.
