Linebacker's

I have a question about the linebackers. maybe someone with a little more knowledge can help me out.

why do they take a jab step inside before they start the back pedal on that weak zone and even in man coverage? they obviously arent blitzing, so they arent fooling anyone... is it supposed to be a timing thing?

It's supposed to be a read/react thing. Think they forget that part. Funny thing is I remember when we were being taught that playing football and our coaches said they learned it from the guys at Penn State. Not sure if everyone does it but thats kind of ironic.

At this point number 87 on special teams is better to have out there on defense over Cornelius. Cant wait till him and Highsmith are gone.

kirby, figs, and grace are a different kind of athlete.

We better hope the light bulb comes on with Kirby soon. We need that kid to really start contributing. Figs is a great athlete too, but these kids need to learn the position. Something is seriously wrong on this defense. I said it before, and I will say it again. We need a new LB coach along with a new DC. Barrow should be moved to Special Teams. I dont want to lose him as a recruiter, but honestly, the LB play here has been getting progressively worse. You could throw two high school kids in there and I dont think they would play much worse than Cornelius and Gaines.

Hmmmm... all we need is a linebacker coach who teaches guys like Cornelius, Armbruster and Gaines to play like Armstead, DJ Williams and Dan Morgan. It's so simple why hasn't anyone thought of this before????

Everybody in football does it. It's a READ STEP.

It's a step, couple inches in length, at the snap of the football to help get you moving forward as you make your initial read.

Grace is a true Frosh. If you are an HC and having to play a True Frosh, that kid better be a freaking PHENOM, or you are going to have problems.

Maybe a kid like Skai Moore, from south Florida, who wanted to be a Cane, but was offered by the staff on signing day and told us to **** off. He's now starting in the SEC for South Carolina - a top 20 defense - and leads their team in tackles.

Good coaches bring in quality players and get **** done. Enough excuses for Golden.

Ouch. What a fail by this staff. SMH

Right, I figured everyone does it but I didn't want to throw that out there like that

Apparently our D-linemen take those same reads steps. LOL

Actually DJ is a very good example of development because he wasn't very good as a sophomore linebacker and of course was a fullback as a freshman. He got better and better every year. One of the key differences for DJ as a sophomore was that he at least understood what he was supposed to do. It's easier to harness athletic ability when they understand what they need to do. It took awhile before he was a great cover (which he was as a senior) and shed blocks to make plays, but he understood early in his career what gap to fill and who to negate. These are the things our guys struggle with every play.

34 and 59 make mistakes on every single play. Terrible reads constantly, and especially in 59s case, too slow to make up for it. Neither looks very good pattern matching.

51 knows his responsibilities very well, is clearly on top of his pattern match rules. But he's not a good athlete.

52 however is a better player than we even appreciate and is easily our best player on D.

It doesn't help that #96 never commands a double team. He is easily handled 1 on 1. WCD: could this be why we are seeing ILBs crashing inside so much?

It's called a Read Step.

regardless of what it is called, it doesnt fool anyone but our own players. it messes up the timing on our drop backs and i hate it. if you are going to fake blitz, fake blitz, but dont be little hoes every time your going to drop into coverage and take a step forward just for the **** of it.

I was going to start a thread on this, but since this one is already here, figured I would just add to it.

Donofrio has his issues, but GAWD **** man our LBs are TERRIBLE. Jimmy Gaines and Cornelius are AWFUL. Perhaps two of the worst LBs I can remember playing at Miami in the last 30 years.

Seriously. These kids are TERRIBLE. I mean I feel for them, Gaines really tries, but the kid is in the wrong place 80% of the time. He cant shed blocks, he takes bad angles, and goes the wrong way constantly.

Cornelius I dont even know what to say. About the only thing he's even remotely useful for is coverage, and that's only because everyone else is worse. He is simply terrible against the run. Pretty much every running play ends up having to be stopped at the Safety level.

Our DL is pretty bad too. People can sit there and blame the scheme all the want, but the front 4 get NO penetration at all. Even when they try to pin their ears back and go up field, they get very little pressure.

This defense needs a SERIOUS talent infusion.

You didn't even being up Armbrister , he was awful yesterday.

he couldnt even get to the qb when he rushed. he was so slow. Figs will knock him out of the "or" position on depth chart. Hopefully Juwon and Grace get strong over the offseason.

It's not a fake blitz and it's not designed to fool anyone. It's a read step. All LB's do this.

As a LB you're a "run first" player. Your primary responsibility is the run, thus your first step is forward. (just like a DB's first steps are back)

It's a read step.

Take the jab step forward. Make your read. If you read run, continue forward. If you read pass, get to your drops.

At the very least he has been consistent, yesterday was no different.

Cornelius made Armbrister look like **** Butkus.
That Savage run for a td, where he jukes 31 and doesn't even have to worry about 30 who was a statue, pretty much sums up our defensive issues. 9 versus 11 and our two DT's get handled by single blockers, which is why Perryman seems to always have some 300lb **** in his grill on every running play.

I got a question....why is Cornelius' jersey NEVER dirty at the end of the game?

ya dude could literaly go straight ot the club in full uniform attire an still be fresh as **** no shower no nothing.

Just as bad is my boi Thurston i dont know if u guys pay attention but dude gets mauled every game i mean some epic Blindside like blocks where guys pile drive him to the ground...i just shake my head.

lulz wasn't dj williams a 5 star, all american, number one recruit in the country type guy?

yeah who doesn't need more of that guy?

great insight, OP.
