Levonte Whitfield

here we go. he had very few, if any scholarship offers out of hs, came to UM on a track ship, which was quickly converted to fb in a week or 2 of his arrival.
he played on run oriented hs team. he didn't arrive at UM a great or even good wr. he came here w/ speed and potential and became a great wr.
if you want to disagree just to disagree, go ahead. i'm sure u will get plenty of guys to agree w/ you just b/c they want to.
the guys who know fb and UM and were around then will probably disagree with you, but, go on.

He had a track scholarship and small offer list because his high school threw the ball like 6 times his senior year. He was always a football player though. He had a couple big drops, but he was always an instinctual receiver and good route runner.

Sure, I'll go on.

When I talk about him being a football player, I'm speaking of his mentality and aggression on the football field. Was he a polished WR? No...Could you have stuck Santana in the defensive backfield and let him go run around and hit people? **** Yeah. Could have played on special teams too. Football is a game of physicality and Santana was NEVER afraid to be physical. That's what I mean when I say he was a football player. Not necessarily talking about him arriving on campus with a polished skill set.

that's all i said. he wasn't a great wr upon arrival and grew into a great wr here. right, not polished.
i think dhc said the same thing i said. he was a dual sport athlete. not sure more fb than track in hs.
i love santana. just had a big drop in the fsu game (i think), may have gone for a td and changed the outcome a little.

Santana also ran really smooth routes. Kermit is a little sloppy in his breaks. Either way, good looking player and I would take him over Strong but not Coley

He wasn't all the developed as a WR when he got here. The Santana we came to know over time was all those things.

People gotta chill with this Santana comparison. The embodiment of a great athlete and great football player. Plays bigger than Andre Johnson, who is 6 inches bigger than him and about 35-40 pounds heavier. Santana was Steve Smith before Steve Smith. Not only could he catch a hitch or slant and house it, but he combines awesome leaping ability with tremendous ball skills.

Santana Moss' are extremely rare

I knew we had a great one with Santana his freshmans year when he showed a total lack of fear. He wasn't a polished WR by any stretch, but the thing that stuck out to me was seeing this 165 pound kid going over the middle of the football field and fully extending for high passes leaving his ribs completely exposed.

Truly one of our all-time greats. Loved that guy.

I really don't see the Parrish or Moss comparisons as working. Parrish particularly had such fluid movements, and that guy could burst out of a cut like no other. I don't see the same with Whitfield. If anything, he reminds me more of Dorsett in terms of straight-line speed, but even that comparison is a bit of stretch. With regards to agility, he's no where near the level of a Parrish or Moss. Perhaps more Sinorice Moss than anything else?

With that said, I'd take a Coley and Strong over Whitfield. In fact, I'd take a lot of other WR prospects over this kid. If the class was going to be a normal 25-signee class, then I'd think about fitting him in. But even then, can someone honestly argue that this kid is a definite take over other smaller WR prosects in the state, such as Estime, another kid that I think is a good player, but would not offer.

Listen, I'm a BIG Santana fan, but how can you say he plays BIGGER than one of the most physical, beastly WRs in the league? Bit of a stretch, no??

When I say that...I mean it on a bit of a scale. Santana plays far bigger than his size. Andre plays what he is listed as. Fitzgerald is another guy that plays bigger than what he is listed as.

Of course he does. It's tough to play "bigger" than the size of a linebacker.

Fitzgerald is the same size and I feel like he plays bigger than Dre

I think Fitzgerald makes more acrobatic catches an probably high points the ball as good as anyone in the history of the game, but I don't think he's anywhere near as physical as Johnson. Guys used to bounce of Johnson like ping pong balls, and he was so strong he'd make it look effortless the way he'd separate physically from DBs.
