Lane Kiffin at SEC media days

I am not tied to a coach. Some are. I know you just want Miami to be great. If the people with the money would support any coach, that would be ideal, but it’s their money…

Who is tied to a coach? A lot of us are tied to the program. I always considered that coaches are employees. I don’t think what you get is the concept of sunk costs.

Explain the sunk costs then…

So the expectations have not been reset for Mario vs previous staffs?

That’s just not true, at least on this message board there are multiple posts in multiple threads with 7 wins/8 wins as acceptable numbers… which is ridiculous from a Miami expectations perspective and inconsistent with past expectations for lesser staffs with lesser resources…

Google it, chief. I’m not your personal instructor.

Let me just attempt a thought-exercise here. Because I think that you DO want Miami to be great again, unlike some of these Mopers who are going to have to find a new schtick soon.

You said you wanted "the offense and the arrogance" from Kiffin. And you made a bit of a broad statement about people being "tied to a coach". I'm not being critical, I'm just a bit confused.

Here are the coaches we've had:

Schellenberger - former OC
JJ - former DC
Erickson - former OC
Butch - former DC
Coker - former OC
Shannon - former DC
Golden - former DC
Richt - former OC
Diaz - former DC
Mario - former Co-OC

Now, the reason I pointed this out is to show that we have historically alternated between hiring an O-minded guy vs. a D-minded guy. Miami has not always been "all one style" when it comes to the focus of our Head Coach, though it is true that we have skewed towards the D-minded guys since Coker.

As for the "arrogance", I think this is a misguided "desired" attribute. Behind Miami's 1980s/90s "arrogance" was incredible talent and hard work. And the "arrogance" was a response to many others choosing to "hate" Miami and its players. I find Kiffin's "arrogance" to be an empty arrogance, as he has not really accomplished anything significant as a head coach, though he has had a lot of success as an assistant at storied programs such as USC and Alabama.

Now, GIVEN THE TEAM WE HAD under Manny, I'm not so sure that Kiffin would have been the right approach, because of the laziness and lack of discipline that we already had. Yes, we may have won more than 5 games last year, but I'm not sure we would have transformed the culture as much as Mario is doing.

Having said that, there were advocates of Kiffin's on the UM Board of Trustees. It was not a unanimous slam-dunk decision, even if Mario was in the pole position during the entire process.

So we need to move on and stop acting like there was no coaching search. Had Miami not hired Mario, he would have had other P5 offers. And maybe he would have stayed at Oregon. This wasn't like with Richt, where people had concerns about his age/health and leaving UGa, and Miami was the primary suitor. This wasn't like Manny, where the AD made the decision without any other discussions or considerations.

Yes, Mario is an alum, like Richt. Yes, Mario is a former UM employee, like Manny. But Mario was clearly qualified and in-demand, regardless of whether UM fans wanted "someone else" instead.

It's done now. Let's just acknowledge that Kiffin is a puffy-faced mess of a human being WITHOUT having to reference Mario. Kiffin is funny just because he's funny, not because he was "almost" a job candidate at Miami. We don't need to use the words "Lane" and "Mario" in the same sentence every single time.

That is all.

You brought it up trying to be smart…

So expectations have change because Mario is a sunk cost… sounds pessimistic…

I'm not so sure about that.

I think the #1 thing that impacts people's PUBLIC expressions of "expectations" is ego/emotion/embarrassment (fear of).

A lot of the posters on this board want to appear cool and "unbiased" and give off the impression that they are "keepin' it real", so they will only admit to an expectation of 6 or 7 wins.

Fugg 'em.

I am fully aware that my expectations are conditional, they are based on a non-catastrophic number of injuries, they are based on players and coaches performing to their capabilities and history after a very disheartening year in 2022. And they are based on my assessments of our opponents, with none of them massively out-kicking their coverage (in terms of talent and prior-year performance).

I think we go 9-3 and win our bowl game.

There. Those are my expectations. I'm not resetting them or citing "sunk costs". Just a reasonable assessment, and I'm not inviting a "debate" on it, as we have been mindlessly debating this crap for months.

It's now time for summer practice to start, and the games to be played shortly thereafter.

This is why I like you..

Yes, I do want Miami and therefore Mario to be highly successful. I want to win. Admittedly Kiffin amuses me, and I would have preferred his offensive mindset to Mario’s, but I don’t really care about the arrogance and the need for everyone to hate us and that was definitely more of a comment on what some may prefer related to Lane.

My beating of the dead horse related to the tied to a coach is two-fold:
1. At least the perception that the heavy investment into the program was tied to Mario. To that one, if that was/is the case, then Mario would always be the #1 choice because it really isn’t a choice if we don’t have the investment.

2. The change in expectations. Manny or Mandy or Lispy or whatever childish nickname was expected to win 10 games… now we have expectations that less than that is OK - which is mind boggling for many of the reasons you outlined: Mario was a sought after P5 coach and Manny was a learning on the fly, in over his head DC, with no resources…

Let me add one more item for your consideration.

Given Lane's "any reasonable offer" comment about coming to Miami...and Mario's ABSOLUTE "I will not come unless I get certain guarantees on resources", I think we made the best (and right) decision.

I think we would have had an increase in contributions either way, but Mario had a LOT more specifics and a much larger expectation of increased expenditure levels. I do not think we had alums who said "I will only give money if Mario is hired", but we may have had a few who gave MORE than they would have BECAUSE Mario was being hired.

I appreciate this line of reasoning.

Don't worry the mopers will kiss his nuts if and when he gets us good again, they have to realize what he walked into last year.

I thought it ironic Lane Kiffin blasted NIL and the portal system. If you want more from NIL do the work to get local businesses to provide more money to your players. He’s made several key signings in the portal so I don’t know what he’s complaining about there. His starting QB was a portal signing. Have they lost more players to the portal than signed?

All from a head coach that bolted Tennessee in the middle of the night after one season, campaigned for the Miami job before Mario was hired, and last season flirted with Auburn when he had Ole Miss 8-1 and ranked in the top 10, only to lose his remaining games. Still managed to sign a nice, fat extension.

Lane Kiffin is CFB’s ‘Cult of Personality’ poster child. His rival SEC coaches probably won’t say it publicly, but I bet they relish beating him more than almost anybody else, with the exception of Nick Saban or Kirby Smart.

Wait, people that want Miami to win and be great, but weren’t happy with 5-7, will be happy when we get better…

Stunning hot take

Come on, you know there are two classes of Mopes.

One group has temporary insanity, and MIGHT be cured with wins.

The other group is a bunch of degenerates who will never be happy.
