Ladarius Gunter...expectations?

This is really more important than people talk about.

A lot of people (including myself) thought he only had 2 years, but I looked it up tonight and was surprised.

I was wrong as well. SouthpawCane I think corrected me about a week ago. I assumed he only had two because like Lu pointed out, having 3 is actually a pretty big deal and I hadn't remembered hearing that.

Having a CB step in ready to play for three seasons is huge when you have absolutely zero proven depth. That's why getting Howard was so crucial also. Most of us knew Howard was the best CB as soon as he stepped on campus and he proved us right. Now you have guys like Finnie who got burn and McGhee who should be ready to roll and then next season CB will be a position of strength.

I don't know Ghost... Brandon Harris locked it down.
Yep, will be the best since BH

I sure hope all of our current CB's become better than Brandon Harris. The guy had 4 career INT's at Miami and one of those was against FAMU. He had one INT his Junior season before he left for the pro's prematurely. **** DVD had 3 career INT's over 4 seasons at Miami. He didn't even average 1 INT a season. The CB position has been abysmal since 2005 when we had the top rated pass defense in the nation. That secondary consisted of Merriweather, Jennings, Maxey, K. Philips, Ponder, and R. Philips. There were 14 INT's that year.
Harris was solid his last yr for us

He had 1 INT the entire season. Yeah he locked his side down but he never became the ball hawk he could have been. He always dropped balls that were thrown right to his numbers. His hands and ball skills needed major work IMO. Just haven't understood why players like him left early before accomplishing anything they set out for. He would have been huge in the defense last year.

Brandon Harris didn't get a lot of interceptions b/c QBs rarely tried to throw it his way. He was a lockdown corner and he would lay the wood in run support. Cornerbacks usually are graded by how much they can make the receiver "disappear" in games, over interceptions, and he pretty much shut receivers down since day one.

It is an insult to compare him to mike Williams. He will be a very good corner here. He has been impressive

Just think of how bad we would have been without him :(

I think we would have still finished 6-6 without him.... we should've just kept JoJo Nicolas at cornerback the whole year. Mike Williams made our defense look worse.

I bet Wake Forest was getting a good laugh watching Mike Williams play for us last year..... So sad.

Part of the confusion about Gunter's eligibilty stems from the fact that the official UM roster originally listed him as a RSjunior. I know, because I looked up his status a few months ago, and that is what the roster said at that time.

Coach Golden had said that one of the good things about Gunter was that he had 3 years of eligibilty left, but some posters were saying no, only two. So I checked the roster (a few months ago) and found that he was listed as a junior. The current roster has apparently been corrected to list him as a RS sophomore.

This

Antrel Rolle had 1 INT his senior year that was All ACC/All American. A good lockdown corner wont have exceptional numbers because they dont get many balls thrown there way

Micanor Regis had 3 career INTs making Brandon Harris the second best cornerback of the vaunted 2008 recruiting class.

I don't agree at all. QB's threw his way and I lost count of how many balls bounced right off his chest or in and out of hands. Harris was the best CB on a roster of mediocre CB's. If he was such a baller where is he in the NFL? Our CB's have a history of coming out of college and dominating at the next level. Harris is not one of them. He may prove me and others wrong. We'll wait and see if that's the case. If he's developing then why didn't he develop one more year in college?

No

1. Harris was mediocre as a freshman and made huge improvements to become a very good player his sophomore year.

2. Harris was a good CB but at no point was he a lock down guy. He had games where he got picked on (i.e Wake Forest, Wisconsin, ND). Most of the time he didn't even cover the top WR (Little, Posey, Baldwin, Smith).

Ill wait till i see him play live first..i know its the pre season and all but people were saying the same thing about our corners at greentree last year..you guys have short memories

I can't speak for everyone, but I was scared ****less of the entire D, especially the secondary.

We had two scholarship CBs on the roster when Golden got hired: McGee (who had wildly underperformed), and Keion Payne (who couldn't even get on the field and has since transferred to Tuskegee or some ****). I knew we were in trouble when JoJo Nicholas, a converted strong safety, had a death grip on one of the CB spots. And then when he had to move back to safety after Ray Ray suspension, I knew we were gonna get lit up. In fact, I was terrified of the entire back 7.

I didn't expect the front 4 to be THAT bad as well.

Floyd son'd Harris like he was still in high school, Van Dyke gets more PT in the league.

It's encouraging to hear the good reports about our young DBs, but all that means squat if you can't generate any kind of pass rush. As someone stated earlier, good job attacking a position of need, and now it's time to get that DL up as well.

So does Shields, but BH was an far better corner for us. What they do in the NFL doesn't mean a **** thing.

Harris was good.

Gunter is gonna be all ACC. No one has seen him play so he's unknown but I think he will surprise.

micanor was constantly pushed back into the dfang secondary he should have had 6 career picks.

As bad as Forston gets dogged here...gotdmn regis for all his size and strength got owned frequently...i didnt ntice it much till last year...he was routinely on skates.

Our cb's have a history of dominating in the league? O'rly? Name one recent corner who fits that bill. Harris was a solid underappreciated guy here--no world beater but invaluable to that defense since he ran the back. He didnt get a lot of picks because he played a lot of man in that D. We havent had a corner get more than 5 picks since buchanon who had 5. Did rumph and rolle and jennings also stink? The safeties shouldve benefitted in that system and they did to an extent (reed, taylor, meriweather). I suspect these newer guys in this system will rack up more picks although that wont mean they are better.

On the topic, I doubt anyone knows what this guy will do but he'll learn on the job like everyone else. I'm sure he'll have his share of struggles. This year is honestly just prep work for the future.

How can Harris be "underappreciated"? The guy came in hyped us one of the best CBs in the nation, on par with Janoris Jenkins and Pat Peterson. He ended up as a disappointment, typical of the Shannon era...workout/combine warriors, puss*cats on the field. The list of these kinds of characters is a mile long.

being better than mcgee and a true freshman isnt saying much

where was this? Have to be real delusional to be hyping up a CB group of Mike Williams (reserve at Wake Forest), Chambers (RB year before), McGee (barely played first 2 years), and Finnie (Fr.)

Last year people were clamoring how mike williams ran a 4.3 and was a senior and how he started at wake forest as a freshman/sophmore and got a raw deal.. I remember.. Lee Chambers was considered physical and very good against the run..

Find those posts then, because I'm guessing that didn't exist. Nobody was excited about getting a 6th year senior from Wake Forest that lost his job there to a true freshman and would've quit football if not for us.

Don't know if it's been posted on the board, but Gunter has 3 years of eligibility, which is GREAT news

but 2 years 2 play meaning he can be redshirted if need be

No, he has 3 years to play 3 years and can still be eligible for a medical redshirt should he need one.

This. He is a redshirt sophomore

That's great news. I was also under the assumption he had 2 years of eligibilty left.
