Lack Of Institutional Control At Tennessee?

I also don't see a problem with elite players making more money than other players. If they sell jerseys with their name and number on them, why shouldn't they make a greater profit. Manziel generates more money than any other player on his team. He should in turn be compensated for that earning power. Give each kid what they earn IMO.

I agree in principle NVA, however, it flat won't stand up in court due to TITLE IX. That would also lead to a free for all in recruiting because there would be essentially an arms race for marketing $$ which would curb the competitive advantage to the SEC even more than it is.

The reality is we are stuck (for the most part) with this ****** arrangement with no good answer in sight.

It's what Al said (he just gets it): make it a uniform stipend and then if you're caught outside of that the penalty is severe. Done and done.

I'm all for this, however, it could cause some severe issues with smaller schools that can' afford that. Cost of living would also have to be taken into consideration. Sports progams will be cut and less opportunities for student athletes as a whole. That is the reality of many of the new regs. that are created.....unintended consequences. Title IX was created to increase athletic opportunities for female athletes. As a result, however, Mens sports programs have been cut drastically to help colleges become compliant.

For those unfamiliar with Title IX (the law of the land):

Three-prong test

HEW's 1979 Policy Interpretation articulated three ways compliance with Title IX can be achieved. This became known as the "three-part test" for compliance. A recipient of federal funds can demonstrate compliance with Title IX by meeting any one of the three prongs.

"All such assistance should be available on a substantially proportional basis to the number of male and female participants in the institution's athletic program."

"Male and female athletes should receive equivalent treatment, benefits, and opportunities" regarding facilities.

"The athletic interests and abilities of male and female students must be equally effectively accommodated."

"Institutions must provide both the opportunity for individuals of each *** to participate in intercollegiate competition, and for athletes of each *** to have competitive team schedules which equally reflect their abilities." Compliance can be assessed in any one of three ways:

Providing athletic participation opportunities that are substantially proportionate to the student enrollment. This prong of the test is satisfied when participation opportunities for men and women are "substantially proportionate" to their respective undergraduate enrollment.

Demonstrating a continual expansion of athletic opportunities for the underrepresented ***. This prong of the test is satisfied when an institution has a history and continuing practice of program expansion that is responsive to the developing interests and abilities of the underrepresented *** (typically female).

Accommodating the interest and ability of underrepresented ***. This prong of the test is satisfied when an institution is meeting the interests and abilities of its female students even where there are disproportionately fewer females than males participating in sports.
