What’s funny is Pete is saying Hillery is ahead of Herbert at this point. Hillery was scout POY over Herbert and others.

Part of recruiting is evaluating as well. If you fill the position with top notch players, you’re doing your job.

Hillery might have been Scout team OPOY, but Herbert was listed as 2nd on the depth chart at LT all year. Had McDermott gotten hurt, he might have had his redshirt burned.

So maybe Herbert wasn't even paying as much scout team, because he was on the 2nd string unit.

This is fair. I was led to believe that Darling would actually move over to LT and they'd put Gaynor or Mahoney in at LG, but that could be totally inaccurate. I also thought that Brown was playing mostly second team, but a big disadvantage I have with news on the team is my location and not being able to see them practice.

I think you learn so much about a player by watching him practice. There were kids I'd see with far less talent than their peers that I just knew would zoom past them because of the way they practiced and prepared each day.

I think you'd be right if like it was a small injury that they only needed a sub for like a drive, because they wouldn't want to burn the redshirt over some bs. But if McDermott got hurt and like was set to miss multiple weeks, then Herbert likely would have gotten pt.

George Brown Jr was our 2nd string RT.

It'll be interesting to see what we do at the OL this season, theres all kinds of combo's that realistically could happen, and we know for sure that Gauthier, Donaldson, and St Louis will be 3 of the starters. We just don't know where they will start. I'd bet on:

LT: Herbert > Hillery > Campbell
LG: Boulware > Scaife > Mahoney
C: Gauthier > Gaynor >
RG: Donaldson > Reed > Mahoney
RT: St Louis > Brown Jr > Campbell

Interesting that you have St Louis staying at RT. I certainly don't disagree with you. This is one position battle I'm looking forward to seeing shake out. I was really glad to hear Tyler Horn talk about the difficulty some players have with moving from right to left. Most fans don't understand that its not as easy as telling a guy to move from right to left. He even pointed out that Seantrel couldn't do it. Plus St Louis has started 21 straight at RT. So...

St Louis is definitely one of the more likely possibilities.
If he can make the switch to LT and keep the high level play, we will likely do that, because LT is more important than RT. However I think we might want to just keep him and Donaldson on the same side together again, so that way, the Right side of our line we will know is good. It basically narrows down the OL question to who will step up at LT, and who fits best at LG. If Herbert or Hillery or even George Brown perform best at LT, its their job (though we might see a little rotation unlike last year). at LG it'll be between Boulware, Gauthier, and Scaife. Mahoney is just a depth guy. Gauthier will only move to LG if Corey Gaynor is killing it (basically if Gaynor > Boulware/Scaife, Gauthier will probably move to LG.

Discussions about Rumph's coaching impact always expose the porsters who think they understand football but really have no clue what they're talking about. Carry on.

Why some of you guys conversate with these known trolls is beyond me. If you ignore them they go away. If you respond they've got their nut.

A troll with 6900 posts tells you the level of loser you're messing with

Insane, the big difference between Bama, Clemson, etc is their pass rush. They don't have to bring extra guys like we do and when we do it we fall back into zone. As the season progresses, teams saw this and our pass defense went to crap. Those defenses you mentioned are very talented and combined with aggressive play on the corner with help over the top, they are certainly going to look different. I'm not saying we have similar talent at the CB position either, but its more of a case of DL talent and poor Diaz schemes. I hate how he blitzes and has the corners 10 yards off the ball. You take a chance, go for broke. Granted, our corners are on the small side and the bigger receivers these days exploit that. Really, we aren't where we should be, but hopefully we can get there. I don't see a shutdown corner yet (roster or early commit), but I do see those bigger bodies coming in that can mix it up.
I appreciate the response. Unlike most this one is not retarded. That said, I have to disagree. FYI both Bama and Clemson blitz. They also get pressure with their front 4 but so did we. We had a badass defensive line this past year. The problem is that the ball came out of the QB's hands so fast it was often impossible to get to the QB. Slants are quick throws and slants where never defended well by our secondary all season long.
Now, I do agree Diaz is in part to blame. He loves to blitz. I think he blitzes a bit too much. He is also poor at disguising blitzes. The issue is blitzing leaves some DB's one on one. If Diaz felt comfortable with that he plays bump and run. If you don't you play man 10 off. If you are absolutely terrified of getting toasted deep you play soft zone. Diaz played a lot of soft zone. This begs the question as to why he was so scared of our DB play? I also agree that talent plays a part. But, take a look at the Orange bowl. Are Wisconsins DB's that much more talented than us? I did not see that. What I saw where we'll coached DB's abusing our receivers every chance they got.

Agree with all this also don't like how much he played cover one with redwine on the slot, redwine doesn't have the skill set to cover the slot receiver and as we saw it burnt us bad in the Wisconsin game
