And so is firing your *** when you don't perform. I don't think you want to start quoting fair business practices here.If another company offers me a huge salary increase, giving my current employer the opportunity to match it or beat it is considered fair business practice.
Are coaches not allowed to cut players? Scholarships are renewed every year. Nobody is forcing teams to keep kids they don't want. And so is firing your *** when you don't perform. I don't think you want to start quoting fair business practices here.
Now you're moving the goal posts. The players absolutely need to be paid their worth, but there is a very fine line that will not be in the players' best interest if you're going to head down the road quoting fair business practices. Are coaches not allowed to cut players? I can't remember if it was Mario or another coach that said it, "The portal works both ways". Coaches and schools have been treating this as a business for decades. I get it as a fan it sucks to see your favorite team lose guys over this, but the players are maximizing opportunities. A slim percentage of them will be successful NFL players anyways. Are coaches not allowed to cut players? Scholarships are renewed every year. Nobody is forcing teams to keep kids they don't want.
It's up to the players and the people paying them to determine what's in their best interest. If Georgia wants to pay Carson Beck more money to keep him from entering the NFL draft, that's their decision to make. Just like it's Beck's decision to enter the draft or not. If Beck is demanding more money than the Bulldogs think he is worth, they can tell him to kick rocks. Now you're moving the goal posts. From a legal standpoint I agree wholeheartedly, but even with everything you propose, nothing would stop company A from offering s player $1million for a TV commercial just like in pro sports with endorsements. So UGA could still find a company owned by alumni that would “Outbid” the competition. The solution is a collective bargaining agreement with players. A huge hurdle, but one that would solve the issue. Colleges and players could adhere to a NIL/compensation salary cap. Smaller colleges would mandate that this time around, there would be no wink winks at bags. Transfers could take place, but after the third year.
Again, huge hurdle but you need the players to collectively bargain.
More towards a de facto professional sport.Hmmmmm..........seems as though it's heading toward legalized extortion.
De facto?More towards a de facto professional sport.
Agreed. But what happens if I hire someone to do a job for me and they don't fulfill the parameters of the contract? They don't get paid. The players aren't interested in the fair business practices you quoted. They're looking at this as a one way street. It's up to the players and the people paying them to determine what's in their best interest. They’re not really amateurs anymore. They’re getting paid to play for certain teams under the guise of NIL.De facto?
I feel you, but "de facto" went out the window a long time ago! They’re not really amateurs anymore. They’re getting paid to play for certain teams under the guise of NIL.
And with that comes ramifications when the "play" isn't up to the standards of the pay. The players can't have it both ways. That's all I'm saying. They’re not really amateurs anymore. They’re getting paid to play for certain teams under the guise of NIL.
That’s how it should be if they’re getting paid. And with that comes ramifications when the "play" isn't up to the standards of the pay. The players can't have it both ways. That's all I'm saying.
When the field hands start getting paid, people start having issues with capitalism. These young men are putting their bodies on the line, get every dime possible because these fans sure as **** won’t be there when the cheering stops.Capitalism for me, not for thee.
Legalized extortion???Hmmmmm..........seems as though it's heading toward legalized extortion.
That's what I'm trying to convey. Everything I see is players demanding this and demanding that, without consideration of the other side of the coin. Accountability. That’s how it should be if they’re getting paid.
You're being dramatic. READ the rest of the thread.Legalized extortion???
Since when did negotiation become extortion?
Is Carson Beck holding a gun to UGA's head & forcing them to pay him? They have a QB room full of 5-star QB's, with 2 more signing with them in December, plus the portal is chock-full of QB's.
If they don't wanna pay him they don't have to.
